Porsche has unveiled the 2011 Boxster Spyder, which will become the lightest Porsche available. The third Boxster model will join the Boxster and Boxster S and debut at the 2009 LA Auto Show.

The Boxster Spyder features a low slung soft-top, extra low side windows and two bulges on the rear lid that make the Spyder reminiscent of the Carrera GT. The Spyder is powered by a 3.4-liter six-cylinder that puts out 320 horsepower, which is 10 more than the Boxster S. It also features an all-new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 20 mm. The Boxster Spyder only weighs 2,811 pounds, which is 176 pounds lighter than the Boxster S.

When equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission the Boxster Spyder reaches 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 166 mph with the roof open.

The 2011 Boxster Spyder goes on sale February 2010. U.S. pricing is $61,200.

and I jizzed in my pants

Noya:

Porsche, always so conservative with their numbers. I'm guessing 0-60mph in less than 4sec with the PDK's launch control.

Blue Z34:

Yes! Finally! Porsche has released a Boxter with enough guts to outrun a 370Z by .1 seconds, and it only costs twice the amount of money! Haha Porsche...it's about time. Now I can't truthfully say that my car can outrun a Porsche Boxter. Damn shame. And I'm doubting this will run 0-60 in the 3s...that's Z06 territory. Still a very rich car though, I bet it handles like a dream...

Wait I thought Porsche was trying to move down market, not up??...

At least they are bringing the Boxster up into a caliber of car that I find representative of the Porsche name plate.

vtfo0lio:

I highly doubt this car even with PDK launch control going to get a 2800lb car in to the sub 4 second range with only 320hp.

JohnBo:

I've always hated the back of the Porsche Boxster, its good they've addressed that issue with the Carrera GT looking rear end. All in all, I good improvement in the Boxster lineup. I wonder if they'll have similar styling adjustments to the coupe version?
