Subaru SVX to Return based on Hybrid Tourer Concept

subaru_svx.jpg
Who remembers the Subaru SVX from the 90's? The SVX was produced from 1991 to 1997 and was Subaru's first attempt at making GT Coupe. Although the SVX failed to meet expectations, Subaru is reportedly working on a successor.

According to the latest reports, Subaru is working on a new coupe that will be based on the same platform as the Hybrid Tourer Concept that is going to be unveiled next week in Tokyo. The car would be powered by a turbocharged 2.5L boxer engine, although a hybrid powerplant is also a possibility. The SVX successor would target high-end performance models.

The SVX is in addition to the FT-86 coupe that Subaru is working on with Toyota.

Andrew:

Is it in addition to the Toyota FT-86 meaning a different platform all together or a re-badged Subaru using the same platform??

In any case, I really liked that model pictured above. It was way different for its time although today it looks really dated.

Noya:

@ Andrew,

I was also a fan of the SVX and probably would have bought a used one as a first car if Subaru had offered a manual in it.

I noticed a mint one in a store parking lot the other day and while it looks dated, it those windows still give it that future car look.

Caveman:

I worked for a Subaru dealership in the 90's and I drove an SVX once. It was propably the only one we ever had in the lot and it was used by our sales manager as a demo.

Anyway, the car was striking to look at... until you sat inside. For the kind money it was asking (I don't remember exactly but I think it was close to or perhaps more than a Mercedes 190E), the finishing was simply underwhelming. And the power was disappointing as well.

In a way, Subaru cars have always been like that. They are more expensive than you expect, the finishing is not the most exciting, but they are solidly built. Their performance is average unless you go for the STi-trim (and pay even more for a car made by a non-premium brand).

It is one of those cars that you have to explain to your neighours and co-workers why you bought it.

And the first time I saw one, I was like "Wait, what happened to those windows..." And the 2nd time, "God I just want to break those..."
