DeLorean to Ressurrect the Pontiac Solstice?

2011_delorean_solstice.jpg
There are some strange rumors brewing between DeLorean Motor Company and Pontiac. You will recall that DeLorean was responsible for the production of the "Back to the Future" car in the 80's. Well since then the company has basically been just servicing the old DMC's. Now there are rumors that DeLorean may be considering buying the recently killed Pontiac Solstice platform and the Wilmington Assembly Plant that produced it from GM.

Apparenly DeLorean's founder had a long history with Pontiac, so it's current management is speculating if their founder would have tried to save it.

"JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts," said James Espey, Vice President of the DeLorean Motor Company.

Currently the company has a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe in its possession for evaluation. DeLorean has also released the drawings you see here.

Jeremy:

I did not even know DeLorean was still around. I hope they do buy the Pontiac Solstice, I think it is a pretty good car.

RunDMC:

As a long time DMC fan I wish them the best in getting this out the door. I'll totally buy one if that happens. Could this be the beginning of a DMC revival?

And how much extra for the Mr. Fusion option? Talk about the ultimate hybrid sports car!

SteelCity1981:

I smell a next generation "Back To The Future" movie in the future (no pun intended). :)

6thgear:

butterfly doors please!! serious, thats there trademark

Kempai Tai:

Dang it... buy the Saturn Sky instead! It looked better!

I, too, had no idea DeLorean still existed ... except in the fantasies of those who still wished the iconic car was still being manufactured.

Patrick:

cocaine in the tires is optional.

@Kempai Tai:

Apparently, DMC motors in its newest form is based out of Texas. They bought out the remaining new old stock parts from the Irish factory and even employed the original DMC parts manager. They also do upgrades to current DMC vehicles (electronics, upgraded engines, etc).

lotsofTRidiots:

But does it have a flux capacitor??? All jokes aside, I think this is a good move, although I agree with Kempai Tai that the Sky looks better. The Kappa platform isn't too bad...

426Hemi:

I hope they give it the green light. A stainless steel Solstice sounds pretty sweet right now.

Kempai Tai:

@longdxcommuter

Holy crap. It's in my STATE?!? Wow... now I really feel out of the loop.

Andy:

I feel happy.........A fallen American icon, helping save another one from hands of extinction.
When I look at SOLTICE, I feel sad for evrybdy who toiled their hardwork and dreams to bring it to people. So easy for us to say ITS CRAP!!

Blue Z34:

Yesss. This needs to happen. The Solstice was far to rich to die off. I wish they would buy the G8 too. Then all the good Pontiacs would be successfully saved...but alas...I do not foresee that happening.

Chad:

The current owner of DMC (in name only, since the original company went bankrupt) is Steve Wynne. Yes, he did purchase the leftover N.O.S parts from BigLots (the discount store) when the plant closed in 1982. They have been building "New" Deloreans for over a year from the parts supply (Hundreds of doors, engines, body parts and a newly constructed stainless chassis) the original was NOT stainless, but plastic coated mild steel that was prone to rust when the coating failed). As far as building the Solstice with a stainless skin, don't hold your breath. A large part of Deloreans original development costs were eaten up producing the tooling to shape the very difficult to stamp T304 grade Stainless body panels (Delorean was discouraged by Colin Chapman and his financiers against the stainless skin, but insisted on it), so it will be very unlikely that the new DMC would even attempt this with costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars OVER the investment of purchasing the Delaware plant and it's tooling contained within. I do, however, think Steve Wynne could pull this off, if he plays his card's right! (Pun intended, since he does own quite a few casinos in Vegas!) Quite a gamble considering.... I know, I know, I couldn't resist!
