Motor Trend has announced the recipient of this year's 2010 Sport Utility of the Year Award and for the second year in a row it goes to a Subaru. The 2010 Subaru Outback has been named the SUV of the Year.
MOTOR TREND editor-in-chief, Angus MacKenzie, said, "The 2010 Subaru Outback offers a unique combination of comfort, efficiency, versatility and value. It boasts car-like refinement, drivability and gas mileage on the road, yet is as capable in the rough stuff as all but the most off-road focused sport utilities. Thoughtfully engineered, cleverly detailed and competitively priced, the Subaru Outback is a terrific all-rounder with broad appeal."
The Outback beat out the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Toyota 4Runner and others to take this year's award. Last year the Subaru Forester took home the award.

PRESS RELEASE:
Subaru Outback Named MOTOR TREND's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year(R)
- Subaru First Automaker with two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year Titles -
CHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the Subaru Outback has been named MOTOR TREND's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year.
The Subaru Outback's victory follows the Subaru Forester's win for the 2009 award, making Subaru the first automaker to win two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year awards.
"We are doubly proud and honored to receive the MOTOR TREND 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year award for the second consecutive year," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America Inc. "To win the 2009 award for the Forester was wonderful enough, but to have won for the 2010 Outback this year is truly an outstanding achievement. The Subaru Outback is an icon of performance and capability and was the original SUV alternative. Now with its improved power, economy and increased dimensions it is the complete package."
Speaking to Subaru of America's sales success as the top performing automaker of 2009, Doll noted, "The success of our business is founded not only on our outstanding products, but also on the commitment and dedication of our retail sales network and great sales and marketing programs. We are absolutely thrilled that MOTOR TREND has added their validation to the Subaru brand."
Priced from $22,995, and produced at Subaru's zero-landfill plant in Lafayette, Indiana, the all-new Subaru Outback is available with either a 170-hp 2.5-liter four cylinder boxer engine or a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine. The 2010 Outback is built on an all-new platform featuring a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase (now 107.9 inches) that improves ride and interior space, especially rear seat legroom. The 2010 Outback also features increased hip and shoulder room.
Living up to Subaru's legendary safety record, the Outback offers cutting-edge safety technology, including Subaru's ring reinforcement safety system, front, seat-mounted side, and side-curtain airbags and ABS. Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, which incorporates stability and traction control systems with a roll-over sensor, is also standard equipment.
The Subaru Outback was recently named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
To judge contenders for the award, MOTOR TREND's editorial staff conducted an exhaustive three-phase testing process. Phase one of the process includes a full tech check and weigh-in, then full track testing to establish baseline data for acceleration, braking, and handling. Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems. In phase three the judges debate and deliberate. This year, the editors updated and expanded the judging criteria to six new categories:
-- Design Advancement - well-executed exterior and interior styling;
innovative vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials.
-- Engineering Excellence - total vehicle concept and execution; clever
solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues;
cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer.
-- Intended Function - how well the vehicle does the job its planners,
designers, and engineers intended it to do.
-- Efficiency - low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to
the vehicle's competitive set.
-- Safety - a vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well
as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm
during a crash.
-- Value - competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those
of vehicles in the same market segment.
MOTOR TREND's Sport/Utility of the Year is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year's crop of new SUV's, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.

One problem it's not an SUV in the first place it's a crossover.

Let's see... SUV = Sport Utility Vehicle. I'm pretty sure this qualifies.

While the Outback may be the best V(ehicle) in the bunch, the 4Runner is the only "SUV" by definition. All other are (ironically) marketed by their manufacturers as non-SUV or SUV-alternate crossovers.

Caveman is right. Most of the finalists were merely station wagons--oops, I meant CROSSOVERS--that lack the true utility that the term SUV implies. All wheel drive does not turn a small hatchback into a sport-ute!

Lesbians and anal retentive people unite! Your Subaru wagon (oops, I said it too) has been recognized as a capable sport utility vehicle (even though it's a wagon).
Now step on the gas and do more than 20mph in the snow. I'm sick of passing you freaks with my 13 year old Sable.
Didn't the Mazda CX-7 win an SUV award as well? Regardless, I've seen it reviewed as a crossover and SUV. Critics can't even properly classify some of these vehicles.

I remember when music had like 10 genres.... now there are like a million. Metal, Alternative Metal, Black Metal, Blackened Metal, etc... good gravy.
Point being; It's impractical to come up with a contest for every made up genre the automotive world comes up with every week. Call it a wagon, call it a SUV, call it a friggin VAN... all of these vehicles are similar enough to be judged together.

SUV's are Wagons! Duh.
A Crossover is a "marketing" term several auto manufacturers came up with to make you think they were creating something new and special but in reality they were just copying what Subaru has been doing for years. Google - Subaru.
Lots of sore losers here who just can't accept the fact it beat the rest because it's simply better for some good reasons.

May the best car win.

Oh my! I still remember when Subaru Outback was a wagon with AWD and souped up suspension.
Wait a minute, that was last year!

Man, how many times do I have to define the term "crossover?" A crossover is a vehicle with the proportions of a traditional SUV, but is built on a CAR'S platform INSTEAD OF A TRUCK'S. Personally, this IS NOT a crossover SUV, but a wagon with AWD.
Case-in-point: true crossover SUVs ARE IN FACT DIFFERENT from traditional truck-based SUVs. Take, for example, the Nissan Armada. It is an SUV built off the Titan's platform (F-Alpha.) Now, consider the SUV Murano. It is an SUV built off the Altima's platform (FF-L) therefore making it a CROSSOVER. Wow, ignorance knows no limits.

Why is it only Ravicai seems to get it, the SUV title is presented as a basis for what "most" consumers are looking for. It's more appropriate to separate the very large 7 pass SUVs from the smaller crossovers/SUVs (or whatever you want to call it) because that's what people are focusing on when they shop for such things. Soccer mom walks into a toyota dealership, asks to look at SUVs, the salesperson would show her any of the crossover/suvs they have, or maybe ask what size, not if it's a car based or a truck based platform. That's reality, deal with it.

@lotsofTRiditots:
So I guess that's a very narrow field for the "true" SUV crowd...
I'm guessing more than 50% or more of any manufacture's SUV/CUV lineup is going to be car based, not truck. Hell Isuzu proved that most people want a car ride, not the ruggedness of a truck chassis.

It's really a matter of durability; crossovers can handle off road activities such as beaches, curb hopping and dirt roads. Real SUV are tough enough for real off road activities. They are different, just look at the weight alone.
Honestly I could care less who wins, just get it right or call it cross-over of the year.

I should hope anyone who is an auto enthusiast would know that.
But the fact remains that even automakers and auto publications cannot agree on some of these platforms.
And since more and more automakers are using unibody construction on the SUV side now, expect that line in the sand to get blurred even more. An AWD jellybean, or an AWD jellybean that can tow. You make the call.
IMO, the Titan and it's covered wagon counterpart are based on a full sized vehicle, and most people are going to call it a truck. I have yet to meet somebody who calls their body-on-frame Expedition or Suburban an SUV. Those things aren't too sporty. Especially with a plow in front, or towing a 21' boat. Save that classification for the smaller platforms.

Why don't they just change it to "crossover of the year" since there is a lot more cososovers on the market now then SUV's considering SUV's are fading now.

Who cares about an award ulness it is an awrad for being a bad car. Subaru makes ugly cars this one still is so alot of people won't even consider it. That is why they have such a small market share.
