Tokyo 09' Preview: Subaru Impreza WRX STI Carbon...Ok?

subaru_wrx_sti_carbon.jpg
Subaru is going to unveil the Impreza WRX STI Carbon at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, but some of the details of the car make you wonder...why? The WRX STI is supposed to be the halo performance car for the Impreza brand, so when Subaru decides to put a carbon fiber roof on this edition, we say..great! It will lower the total weight and center of gravity, which means better performance. But wait... Now for some reason Subaru has decided to add a 5-speed automatic to this version...why?? An automatic? Really?? That makes no sense at all! Also who really cares about suede seats?

PRESS RELEASE:

IMPREZA WRX STI CARBON (Display model)

Based on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line model with 5 speed automatic transmission that offers distinctive driving performance to a wider range of customers, the Subaru Impreza WRX CARBON features the use of carbon material in the roof to achieve both a significant weight reduction and a lower center of gravity. In addition, the suede fabric used in the interior enhances driving excitement and pride of ownership.

I don't mind the suede seats, infact I kind of like the idea but WRX STI and automatic transmission in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

Alright, other than true rally style driving an auto in a turbo car would probably be a better setup. There is limited use of the BOV, considering the throttle never closes during shifts.

Even in extreme driving like rally, time trials, or the like a rachet shifter would be much faster than a standard manual.

If anything the twin clutch setups would be the tops for everyday performance vs. ease of use. Just don't know about their longevity yet.

Guess no one saw that article, several years old at this point, about the guy who had a custom 6 speed auto done in his STi.
It had launch control and everything. With a stock engine it could easily put 3 car lengths in the 1/4 against a stock STi manual.

This really surprises you? From the same company that turned the Subaru STI into.... complete and utter crap.

Doesn't surprise me one bit, I have lost all interest in the Subaru lineup since 2008 models. They are all hideously ugly and no amount of power or handling is going to make me buy a car that ugly.

Alex:

anyone else notice the paddle shifter on the left side of the steering wheel in the interior pics? Not 100% automatic then.....although I'd still like to see it with a 6spd auto w/ paddles rather than 5spd

Its an auto. just cause it has paddle shifters doesnt mean its not, its not a twin clutch tranny or any thing special. Like most Autos with manual shift im sure it doesnt hold the gears in a corner or shift down when you want it to,

This surprises you guys? *yawn* Subaru is simply expanding its demographic. Besides, Subaru's direct competitor has done it for some time now...EVO VII GT-A, anyone???????????????
