Chrysler Plans Five New Models by Mid-2011 and to Rehire Some Workers

Chrysler and Fiat Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is set to submit a five year plan to the company's board of directors Friday. In his plan, Marchionne is calling for facelifts of at least five models by mid-2011. This would include the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot. Chrysler is also working on an update for the aged PT Cruiser.

Marchionne wants the updates completed within 18 months, which would normally take 2-3 years. To meet this goal Chrysler's current workforce is expected to work overtime and some of the workers that were laid off may be rehired.

Of course all of this is dependent on if the board approves the plan and if it does then it will be sent to to President Barack Obama's auto task force next week.

Did I read that correctly? "Chrysler is also working on an update for the aged PT Cruiser." That just sounds stupid. The PT Cruiser sux. It's a niche vehicle doesn't look like it was ever updated and now it's retro look isn't fresh at all. Update it to scrap heap.

SteelCity1981:

The PT Crusier would be good is they turned it into a high performance wagon. I still don't get the point of updating their Mini vans. Mini vans are all but dead now. Mini van sales don't do much better then full size suv sales anymore. When is Cryshler going to see the big picture that cross-overs are the future, not Mini vans.

Brian:

All things come full circle. Now it's the crossover, in another 10 years we will be back at minivans...

I beg to differ that the PT Cruiser wouldn't not make a "high performance wagon". You kind of have to start with something that could even be high performance before we get to the wagon part. Have you been in one? It does not seem to inspire performance. Yeah the 2.4L Turbo was cool and all, but no manual. And really who's gonna buy the "higher" performance version when you could get a Mini or a sport coupe?

@ brain

Ok but you are acting like i'm talking about the current model. I'm talking about the upcoming model. The PT Crusier came from the idea of the Ford roadster, but it's anything but that. Chrysler can turn that all around with it's next version and turn it into a sports wagon that can heavily compete against cars like the Mini. There is no reason why they couldn't if they wanted to. they have the engines to do so. The Dodge Calibar SRT4 is a prime example of that.

ivan matthew cummings:

I agree with brian, mini vans are comming back. Why? Because crossovers are big station wagons, and we all know how that experiment turned out.Vans are a differant catagory all together.
Unfortunatly the vans that chrysler does have are terrible.I think if they revamp them really well they could certainly bring the market back.Even with the ugly model they have now they are selling well.
you go to your local store and look in the parking lot at how many cars there are that are the same.you'll see then, that caravan,t&c's are at the top.
