When Hyundai unveiled the all-new Sonata in Korea, a V6 engine was not mentioned in the press release. Only 2.0L and 2.4L 4-cylinders were mentioned for the Korean market. Well it looks like when the US-spec Sonata is unveiled it will also not receive a V6. According to Hyundai only 15 percent of the Sonatas currently sold are equipped with the V6.
The 2.4L that will be offered will feature direct injection, which is expected to have more power and better fuel economy numbers than the current 2.4L (it's currently rated at 175hp and 22/32 mpg).
Hyundai is also deleting the V6 option from the new Tucson. Expect the 2011 Sonata to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

A V6 option would have been nice, but I guess it's an all right move by Hyundai. Nobody's going to buy this car for power anyways... my guess is those people will go for the Genesis coupe.

Wait WHAT?!
If anything big media has been pushing this BS crap that the "coupe" is dead. Most companies don't even make a good one anymore. (Genesis being the new player on the market, with really the G35/37 as it's main competition?). If Hyundai was really looking to move up market they should have kept it an option. Yeah Toyota sells more 4cyl Camry's than V6's, and I'm sure Honda's the same with the Accord, but it's an option. That's the market they should be going after. If you're looking at a loaded Camry/Accord, you might be willing to go into a lower "luxury" class like Lexus/Infinity/Acura... You don't make the jump from Acura to Hyundai..
At minimum what about the turbo 2.0?

While unfortunate for the enthusiast, the lack of a v6 isn't a big deal and it's even possiple they're preparing to meet new fleet standards....all those large sedans have to be bringing things down a bit. If this car sells well enough to build a good manufacturing base they can always add an option later.

@thetruth
I doubt an enthusiast would buy a sonata for themselves.

As much as i can see why they are doing this, i just think this gives people more reason to go elsewhere. Unless that 4 cylinder has some real kick to it, but i think a car that size should have a 6 cylinder in it, maybe that's just me though.

So we get a car that looks sleek but is as slow as a snail performance wise. Stupid. At least Hyudnai could have offered the v6 as an option for buyers.

This car will be a large seller to rental car agencies like the previous generation sonata and they usually don't buy the upgraded engine.

SteelCity, I agree with you.
I own a 02 Sonata, V6, LX and love it. I was holding out for the 11 Sonata but no V6 is making me rethink (I think the current model exterior is ugly, so that's not an option). Not offering the V6 is due to fleet standards. I really like the interior and exterior shots I've seen, but no V6...argh! Maybe the turbo charged 4 will make up for it? Can't wait to see this at the auto show in Chicago.
