2011 Ford Mustang to Get 315-HP V6 and 400-HP V8 Engines?

2010_ford_mustang_gt_convertible_blue.jpg
It's already known that the 2011 Mustang is set to get engine upgrades to both the V6 and V8 engines. Little details have surfaced until now about how much horsepower we can expect.

A forum member over at The Mustang Source has posted some of what we can expect, hopefully when the 2011 Mustang is released.

First the V6 powered Mustang will see an increase in horsepower to 315 thanks to a new 3.7L (15 more than the Camaro). The V8 powered Mustang GT also gets a horsepower upgrade to 400 thanks to an expected 5.0L Coyote V8. The 5.0L V8 will be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission. Sadly, due to the small horsepower gap between Ford's EcoBoost V6 and the new V8 ( 365 vs 400) it looks like there won't be an EcoBoost V6 powered Mustang.

Let's hope these rumors are true...

Finally, the long awaited 5.0 is back on the mustang. A mustang without a 5.0 just doesn't seem right.

Let the pony wars begin

Should be interesting to see the gas mileage and also see if GM responds and how fast. The Stang has the Challenger and Camaro beaten on the weight front by a few hundred pounds, so if horsepower numbers are correct, the Stang should run circles around them.

The mileage will be interesting because if the 5.0L gets better mileage then the EcoBoost, just another nail in the turbos=better gas mileage coffin.

Noya:

The TrackPack option ($1500) also lets the current Mustang GT stomp the Camaro and Challenger in handling (skidpad and slalom).

Rick:

The 5.0 has no resemblance to the original 5.0 other can cubic inch dimensions. Whats the big deal. The bigger deal is more power and more displacement than the current 4.6.

boo:

Hey, Ford finally learned that a car doesn't need 500 horsepower to make use of a 6th gear!

Brian:

It's sad the new V6 will have more power than the old 5.0...

Turbo's can get better mileage, but just slapping one on the same size engine and making more power with it is not going to get you better fuel economy...

Mustang GT with Track Pack puts down better skid and slalom numbers, but isn't beating the Camaro SS at the track. Camaro makes up for it with power and better braking. The new 5.0L with track pack will be intresting, because it makes up on the power to weight front. But, the 5.0L will add weight and unless it gets better brakes, that extra weight might hurt them.

muscleoverrice:

5.0 should get brembos with track pack+ much stickier tires. They had a 2011 Mustang at Gingerman running with R compounds, it was putting down the same lap time as an E9X M3, even with R compounds thats still impressive. Maybe Fords done with the good enough performance from stangs

It would be interesting too see Hyundai cut prices by a coupe grand and throw the 4.6 from the sedan into the coupe. And fix the dam gear box! And that ugly front end.

Avatar:

I think Hyundai should put the 4.6L in the coupe. The weight difference on the sedan between the 3.8L and the 4.6L is 260 lbs. Not sure what else is different between the two, but let's say its 160 lbs for the trans and v8. That takes the weight up to around 3550 then, which is what the current 4.6L Mustang GT weighs. It would still be able to compete with a higher power group.

The problem is Hyundai isn't moving units, so not sure if they can make a case for it.

I have a feeling that by 2013 dodge will kill the challenger, chevy will kill the camaro(again) and the mustang will out live them again, only to fight the more potent imports like the genesis, 370z, and the ultima coupe. its the 80s all over again

all im gonna say is "HELL YEAH!!!" the challenger is doomed, and the Camaro is about to have a fight on its hands! i think thats a nail in the coffin of both the Camaro and Challenger seeing that the Challenger is already about to die, and the Camaro is barely outselling the mustang as is.

Avatar:

If by 'barely' you mean the Camaro is moving about 33% more units a month for the past three months, then yes, the Camaro is 'barely' outselling the Mustang.

Peter:

Rollin' in my 5.0 ...
Maybe somebody will remake that Vanilla Ice song, perhaps Slim Shady.

SteelCity1981:

The Challenger will be no more then what the retro T-Bird was. It will be around for a few years and then get retired. The Camero has a future if GM doesn't drop the ball. The Mustang just keeps on getting better and better each year. The announcement of the 5.0 should allow Ford to continue to boost sales in the coming years.

Gary:

That should help with sales a bit. If they can keep pricing the same that will peak my interest.

I still think once all the Mullet guys get the Camaro they've been waiting so long for that sales will slow down...

Still no irs...POS. This is 2009, not 1969...POS.

thejester420:

topper if the mustangs solid axle is such a pos then why does it out handle the camaro and the challenger in slalom? IRS is just more fancy crap to break down, it's a muscle car, not a cadillac

Avatar:

And if you put a solid rear on the Camaro or Challenger, they probably wouldn't do the slalom as well. The thing that hurts the Camaro and Challenger the most in slalom is their weight. The Camaro weighs about 300 lbs more then a Mustang GT and the Challenger is a whooping 500 lbs more in R/T form. Also, where are you getting your numbers from? The only slalom numbers I can find are Insideline's (I know, they have lower performance numbers then everyone else) which has the Camaro SS at 68.9 mph and the Mustang GT Track Pack at 68.4 mph.

MT has the following numbers for Mustang GT Track Pack:
Braking, 60-0 mph 108 ft
Lateral acceleration 0.95 g (avg)
MT figure eight 25.5 sec @ 0.70 g (avg)

And now the Camaro SS auto then manual:
Lateral g 0.9 0g 0.90 g
Braking, 60-0 107 ft 105 ft
Figure eight 25.8 @ 0.80 g 25.8 @ 0.80 g

Again, Camaro SS has been beating the Mustang GT Track Pack at the track. First number Camaro SS and second Mustang GT Track Pack.

Fastest Lap 01:40.0 01:40.7
Average speed 80.9 mph 80.3 mph

Unless you find a side by side comparison of cars that cost about the same running the tests the same day with drivers that are experienced enough to get results that they can consistently repeat with the cars, you don’t have any information that is a good representation of how the cars perform.

There is no consistent baseline for any of the information you presented. The weather, driver and track all make a difference. I have found better and worse numbers for both making the differences negligible at best.

Bottom line is which car do you prefer, it doesn’t matter because most people drive like crap anyway and the car is way better than their skill (real or imagined).

thetruth:

Ok, setting aside any Ford vs. Chevy vs. anyone postion that some would like to make, anyone interested in these cars should hope that at least the Camaro survives...competition has helped Ford finally put a good base engine in the Mustang, and most likely the next revision of the Camaro will have a 325hp v6...these things are good for all. Also, I don't see any serious performance figures that would indicate one car dominates the pack, so other than internet fanboys who will probably never own one, the cars perform similar enough in the real world that people probably won't care when shopping around, it'll be up to style or quality or some other factor.

The price of the camaro is all iv got to say. The mustang will win the muscle car wars evry time.
