In addition to the announcement about the Volt and the 25 new models that GM is planning on releasing, the automaker also announced the launch of "The Lab," a microsite featuring future projects by GM's Advanced Design team. The microsite currently features two new concepts that are being developed, the Bare Necessities Truck and the Bare Necessities Car.

The theme of the two concepts is to offer buyers what they want and nothing more, hence "bare necessities."

Mazda6 Guy:

I really like this little car.

DuDe:

these look as ugly as Pokemon. Crazy stuff. Seems like GM cannot find its future direction.

Bradford:

@ the bare necessity truck

how about make it to replace the useless Avalanche? Its just a Silverado Crew cab with a couple irregular features? This seems more useful and like it would sell way better.

@ the bare necessity car

it kinda looks like a Volvo C30 from the back. Besides, doesnt GM already offer this car. Its called the Aveo. Pretty bare to me. No body wants an Aveo or goes out saying "Yup, thats the car for me!!"... its more of a "I need CHEAP. I need BASIC. I DON'T care about looks. What do you got for me GM?" Aveo to the rescue!! Just tweak this car up a little. It really aint that bad of a ride. A terrific little errand runner at a terrific little price.

SteelCity1981:

People are willing to give a little up to have a more efficient vehicle, what's this guys def of giving a little up, that? LOL, yeah right. I mean come on, is this GM's future, hiring a bunch of out of touch people that have no clue what society really wants and needs? How about this GM, design a car that looks good, gets decent performance and has decent fuel economy, because that's what people are looking for. Not some bubbling looking Go-Cart.

stromm:

Don't freaking come out with new models. Just cut the price on the existing models and fine tune them. You aren't going to make money redesigning every year.

Fred "theflo" Oliver:

This is suppose to get me back as a TAXPAYER the bail out money lent to GM............sigh like social security there goes my money!

Icester:

Someone tell me how this is a "truck" concept? Can it haul anything? Can it tow anything? Not a truck if it can't do both. Also, IMO it's not a truck if you can't put a fifth-wheel hitch on it. Otherwise, it's just an SUV or crossover.

As a "normal" person, what would I want a truck for? Well, I am interested in camping so of course looking at campers. Best are the fifth wheelers. So naturally, one needs a truck. After a bit of research, I'm actually thinking of replacing my aging Grand Am with a GMC V8 crew cab pickup. I only lose about 5-6 mpg! Unreal!

thetruth:

ok lcester, sure it's good to have trucks that can haul, but far more people need a truck for utility purposes much shy of a toy hauler, but beyond a car or suv...that's the bulk of the market, not superduty tow rigs, or luxury models, basic service vehicles. Remember your GM is going to be a "light" truck, so make sure you don't feel too macho about it being able to poke along with a 5 wheeler behind it. Make sure you spring for a diesel as well, the gasser is just plain pathetic when you load it up.

thetruth:

While I'm sure the renderings are designed to add interest, since when did the bare necessities include large alloys with what seem to be big slotted rotors. I support makers entertaining the idea of a real point A to B vehicle for a very low price, one that is reliable and safe, but to give a proper image they should restrict the designers to realistic things such as 14" steel wheels and lower tech features....does the chevy badge really plan on glowing as it does in the pictures? This way the engineers and PMs won't have to pump out a totally different model when reality sets in.

Tom T:

Way better looking than Honda's tadpole, thats for sure. I'm a Ford fan so I'm hoping for the Ranger replacement from Ford to be radical. And why doesn't GM just put the Buick motor in their trucks with front wheel drive. I have two buddies with Buick LaCrosse. They are a large car and both them get 36-38 mpg. My 07 Camry only gets 20-24 on the same road trips, whats the deal here?

thetruth:

I actually watched the video on the truck, they mentioned a turbo diesel hybrid powertrain to get 40mpg and a payload capacity of 1500 lbs....not to bad. But come on, why not just offer the small turbo diesel in a modern compact pickup. A turbo 4 diesel has plenty of torque for a small pickup.
