Porsche has unveiled the 2010 911 GT3 RS ahead of its official unveiling in Frankfurt.

The racing version of the 911 GT3 is powered by the same naturally aspirated 3.8L six-cylinder as the the regular GT3, but it has 450 horsepower, compared to 435. It also features an 8,500 rpm redline. The six-speed manual transmission has shorter ratios to give it even more speed on the track. A new option is a lithium ion battery that replaces the the conventional lead-acid battery and reduces the vehicles weight by 22 lbs.

Handling has been improved with a purpose-built PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) suspension and a wider front and rear track.

The 2010 911 GT3 RS goes on sale next spring with a starting price of $132,800.

PRESS RELEASE:

Delivering even more engine power, lower weight and shorter transmission ratios, as well as upgraded body and suspension components than all previous GT3s, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS sets the foundation for homologating the race version of the 911 GT3 and will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show September 17-27, 2009.

The heart of the new, uncompromising GT3 RS is the power unit. Like the engine featured in the 911 GT3, the naturally-aspirated RS power unit now displaces 3.8 liters and delivers even more power, while revving up even faster to its 8500 rpm redline. It now delivers 450 horsepower, 15 more horsepower than its 911 GT3 counterpart. Even with a specific output of more than 118 hp per liter from the six-cylinder boxer engine, the power unit in the new GT3 RS remains fully suitable for everyday use.

The new 911 GT3 RS comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox optimized for short gearshift travel, low weight and high efficiency. To enhance the level of performance throughout the entire range of engine and road speed, the transmission comes with shorter ratios than found in the 911 GT3, deliberately conceding an even higher potential top track speed.

Dynamic engine mounts are standard and serve to improve the car's handling to an even higher level. Depending on driving conditions, the mounts change in their stiffness and damping effect, improving the connection between the engine and the body when driving under very lively conditions, yet allow for more comfortable conditions during everyday street use.

Porsche is also introducing another new option in 2010 for the GT3 RS, a lithium-ion battery. Delivered with the car and, when replacing the conventional lead-acid battery, it reduces the weight by more than 10 kg or 22 lb and is mainly intended for the track.

To further improve its sporting behavior, the new 911 GT3 RS comes with a purpose-built and specially set up PASM suspension, a wider front and rear track and corresponding bodywork.

The front axle comes with nine-inch-wide wheels running on 245/35 ZR 19 sports tires while the rear axle features twelve-inch-wide wheels incorporating 325/30 ZR 19 sports tires.

The new 911 GT3 RS shows its close connection to motorsport through its dynamic looks, in particular by its low ride height, the new, extra large carbon-fiber rear wing and titanium exhaust system.

The 2010 911 GT3 RS goes on sale in the U.S. in early spring of 2010 and will be priced at $132,800.

This is a prime example of a car that no one cares about.

I care about it.
Can I afford it? No, but as an enthusiast I try to keep up with what's going on in the automotive industry including the unveiling of new vehicles or a new model year of the same vehicle.

Now onto some thoughts, I like this car. I like the red accents but I also think it boarders on being too much. Maybe it's the wheels. This car is also pretty much a road legal track car though so I guess it makes sense. If I had the money, I'd take a 458 Italia or Scuderia Spider over this, but I doubt either would be as fun to drive.

Blue Z34:

What!? Don't be dumb! The only people who don't care about these types of vehicles are those that cannot afford! This Porsche is a work of art and a work of rich! I still have my own doubts about its daily drivability, but when you're rich enough to drop 133k on one car...you have others to drive.
arrinef...go watch some Top Gear.

LesBaer45:

Kerrrist! Who did the color design for this? Porsche hiring color blind urrr-baan yute dezinahs?

The car is yet another self congratulatory masturbatory re-hash of the 911 system. Yeah you can tweak and tune the bits and pieces every couple of years for a few more HP and speed but come on Porsche.

How about something new and original?

Totenglocke:

@LesBaer45

Why mess with a winning formula? Or do you not remember New Coke?

Phil:

i dont really like porche all that much... but i think this is a pretty sick looking car, i like it but even if i had the money i would rather have something else on the market for that kind of cash.

kw:

Like the specs.
Hate the wing.
Like the street legal race car thing.
Hate the color combo.
Respect Porsche.
Can't afford it.

Topper:

For people that can afford this car, they would go into Porsche wish book and order up any damn color combination they want. With that said, I like the "regular" GT3 better. If I have money, I'd take the GT3 over the Turbo or the GT2.

Noya:

I'm with Topper in that I'd take the GT3 over a turbocharged model. I mean come on, all motor and still rips to 60mph in the mid-3's...wicked.

426Hemi:

The color combo is a little "off" on this one. Other than that, I love it.

Hamm:

This car is outrageous. If you drive this car you will feel empowered. I think you would feel as if time is in your hands while driving this car. Porsche almost needs to be slowed down by someone or something because they make better sports cars than ANY other manufacturer hands down. This is just another example. As far as the color combo goes, amazing. Engineering into the vehicle, extraordinary.
