The last Pontiac Solstice has rolled off the line at GM's Boxwood Road assembly plant. When GM entered bankruptcy on June 1st, the automaker announced that it would be closing the plant by the end of July that builds the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters. The announcement at the time wasn't a total surprise since GM had been looking for a buyer for Saturn and since Pontiac had been given a death sentence.
The last roadster produced was a silver Solstice.

Good. That's an ugly car. And it was just a pontiac.

I've never driven one but always liked watching go by on the road. They added a nice variety in contrast to all the "me too" automobiles.

I don't see why GM couldn't sell a version of this car under the chevy name. I am sure the new chevy split grill would look nice on this car. All they have to do is increase trunk to Miata levels, improve on quality and they could have a nice competitor to the Mazda.
There is an obvious market for this type of car, Mazda seems to have no issues selling lots of Miatas.

That's always been GM's biggest downfall- quality control. Next is ergonomics. The Solstice was ugly but the Sky was a much better rendition. This could be the spiritual successor to the Buick Reatta.

So sad. Both Solstice and Sky are good looking. The GXP and Red Line both produced good numbers too. Things to do...Places to go...Porsches to pass.

My only real complaint with either one is the height. Or more exactly the height of the doors/body in relation to the driver. When you see one on the road all you can see is maybe the shoulder and head of the driver. For some reason all cars now have shorter windows and taller doors (crash safety?). I personally hate it. It looks wrong, and it makes it uncomfortable to hang your arm out the window if you are cruising.
I see how this compares to the Miata, but frankly I see very few new/current Miatas on the road. I see tons of the older ones (which look significantly better in my opinion). Maybe if the Sky/Solstice was say 20% smaller it would equal a Miata.
I wonder if GM will even keep the 2.0 turbo in production? There won't be a Cruze SS will there?

I'm sorry to see these two cars go away. I love light, two seat roadsters, and even though I prefer the Miata (which I own), I was always happy to know that there was an American company at least TRYING to compete in that market niche.
And outside of myself, I have friends who own a Sky, and they love it. Seems to me this is a product line that will be missed.

@ pablo, it is ugly! That seemed to be Pontiac's way in the last 10+ years, to be the ugliest division of GM...just think Aztek.
It's not like this is a surprise, just compare a Solstice/Sky to a Miata. They look cheap and feel cheap, especially the interiors. The 2.0 turbo was a sick engine though.

My friend has a Sky Redline (manual) with the GM tune for 290hp 330tq and it is one hell of a fun car to drive. Ran 13.5 in the 1/4 with it. Back in May I went with jim to Mecca III. It's where GM invites all the kappa owners to the plant for a tour and lunch etc. The tour was great. None of that behind a velvet rope stuff we were literally on the factory floor, on the assembly line touching the engines before they were in the cars. Really cool to see them building the cars. Shame this car is done, one of the few reasonably priced RWD two seaters, and the only one with a turbo.

What do you expect. They are shutting down what was good, typical for idiots at GM.

To me it wouldn't have been much of a stretch to transition the Sky to Cadillac and make it into a Z4 competitor. Oh well, just a lost opportunity for GM.

@ Chris
That would have been a great idea! Improve its quality and transition it to Cadillac.

I think a lot of you people who put down American cars do so just because you can. I doubt you have been to an American dealership in 20 years.
I own a 2006 MonteCarloSS with the V-8 and a 97 Pontiac GTP supercharged and love them both. Best cars I have owned in many years of car buying that started back in the late 50's. Which is a far cry from the worst American car I ever owned which was a 1980 Pontiac GP with the Buick v-6. It was a dog. Qualtiy was low, body lines didnt match, interier rattled. GM has come a long way. Their cars now are every bit as good or better than their foriegn counterparts.
The people who seem to buy foriegn cars seem to be the ones who drive them into the ground and dont take care of them. Why they are driving them into the ground the cars emmissions go up, parts fall off, and they rust out just like an Amercan car would if treated the same. People have this misconception that foreign cars last forever even if you dont take care of them. Not true.
It's a shame to see people out of work driving off in a foreiegn car. Had to happen sooner or later. We as a country have lost so much manufacturing jobs I fear what would happen if there were ever a war like WW2. But Im sure China would sell us the tanks, planes, weapons we need to defend ourselves.

GM never really believed in the Solstice and Skye, so no real marketing energy was put behind the project. I think the old-guard GM management basically built the cars to placate Bob Lutz and keep him satisfied. There is a definite market for this car, but GM doesn't believe in it and it doesn't fit the corporate "shoebox" car strategy.
GM made the mistake before of believing that everyone wanted to drive a 3-ton SUV...now they believe everyone wants an Aveo, and they think that's all the government will allow them to build once the new fuel economy regs kick in. A short-sighted and dim-witted strategy.

The skye redline had such potential. Damn shame Government Motors can think any further than tomorrow.
Dull as dishwater cars don't sell. They needed something like the skye to keep interest and drag people into the showroom, even if they did wind up buying a Malibu.

Looks like I may have to consider the POS nissan ragtop now. Perfect example of where the consumer loses when competition is eliminated.
