Noya:

And I thought current Acura front ends were ugly...

Ravicai:

haha, even the admins are having problems double posting.

426Hemi:

@Ravicai

Well, had any way.

Topper:

How the HELL this looks different from the current model??? Jesus, may be SAAB should freakin bankrupt too for trying to pass this crap onto their customers. Don't get me wrong, I actually like, or used to, SAAB.

DuDe:

I like this one. If only other GM cars would be similar.

Skipper:

What is with all of the crazy photo angles? Why can't they just show the car?

Mazda6 Guy:

@Skipper

The reason they only show silly angles is because an honest to goodness shot of the car would reveal that it is just a plain, rather bland looking car.

There is nothing in the styling of this car that evokes any sort of emotion. Meh, is perhaps the best way to describe it...

lotsofTRidiots:

This is what I hate about the Internet: stupid people being able to pass off stupid comments to sound/look intelligent and/or witty, only to have it fail. Euh...freedom of speech.

@ Noya:
Looks are subjective, but I'd take this over a can opener.

@ Topper:
Get your eyes checked. Saab's cars may not be as reliable as Honda's or Toyota's, but they have been known for class-leading engineering. Do your homework and you'll find that a lot of automakers once set Saab as their benchmark for safety, the same way some automakers set Porsche as their benchmark for a sports car. Research some more and you'll come to the realization that, oh snap, Saab DID in fact file for bankruptcy...in Swedish court, that is. That's because Sweden and--to a lesser extent--the EU will not hand over GM a penny until Saab is out of GM's hands. Hence why Koenigsegg took Saab out of GM's hands. Never heard of that company before? That's because you'll never, for the life of you, be able to afford a Koenigsegg. Research yet SOME MORE and you will find that, oh snap, Koenigsegg is a Swedish-based super-exclusive producer of exotics.

@ Mazda6 Guy:
Saab's cars were never about being "flashy." They've always been about understatedness. Yet somehow, get into a Saab, and you'll find a plethora of weird quirkiness that only Swedish folks can manage to pull off. There are those who buy a Saab and have absolutely no clue what they've got...and then there are those who buy a Saab because they want to be different from the rest, whether you like it or not.

Furthermore, Saab, as a company, never intended for its cars to be "uber-luxury BMW contenders." They just wanted their cars to be niche players; that's why they've always had 2 models. It's only when GM took majority control of Saab that it tried to steer Saab in a different direction. BUT...you can't compete with the current luxury competition with just 2 models. So GM digs into its parts bin and farts out crap for Saab.

If any of you would pull your smug, high-school diploma heads out of your asses of one second to pay more attention to small automakers like Saab, you'd realize that a lot of their concepts are innovative and class-leading. The only catch was that Saab never received the substantial amount of cash from GM to really let loose.

P.S. A lot of the optional safety features in today's cars came standard in Saab's cars well over a decade ago...That, and the fact that some of today's safety features were first designed and implemented by Saab (i.e. active head restraint.)

thetruth:

I knew TR would pop up in this one, such a Saab fanboy.

Saab didn't get enough cash from GM? GM saved Saab in the early 90's when they were heading towards failure. So in many way's GM (while still doing a poor job) handed Saab back to Sweden in the same position (probably better) than they received them. If anything GM should be commended for helping them exist for the past 18 years. Saab has never had enough cash to do what they wanted, historically they've leaned on other European and UK manufactures for such major things as chasis/platforms and engines.

Saab is also not attempting to be understated, it's more of a failed attempt to be overstated.....their slogan of "born from jets" should be enough evidence of this. I've spend considerable time in Sweden, they take a lot of pride in their domestic goods and loaded Saab is considered tops to them. The socialist culture additionally frowns upon wealthier individuals purchasing foreign produced cars which amplifies their inability to compete in the global markets.

They're not bad cars at all, but nothing special as in Sweden it is BAD to be special (thus Socialism!). Making them out to be anything beyond that is just fan boy BS. I always support consumer options, so hopefully they stick around and add what little they can offer to increasing competition.

If I owned a saab .. . .. . . .. . I would sob :( . .

sil40dori:

Most Saab owners (including me) don't care what people who have never owned one say about Saab. They are not the best, but they have a great history around them and if you have owned one..or two..or three (lol)- It just clicks for you and thats that. Most Saab owners (ones that bought one previous to the 93SS at least) usually end up buying more of them and that should speak for itself. Its not about comparing...its about choosing something different to be begin with.

There is no logic or reason why people dress themselves in most ways, just like its a purely subjective reason certain people love Saabs. They are quirky, unique and should have turbos. Most of the interesting funny stuff about them you'd only know from working on them. And honestly, I've done my fair share of working on asian imports, but I've never really worked on a car that was so logical or easy in most cases like a Saab (some jobs are just a pain no matter what car its on). Even the electrical connectors are fun to open and close...

I can't really say much for the newer stuff, I do like the 93SS cars, the turbo-X and such...but the real passion of most Saab owners lies in the classic 900s and 9000s. I own a 1990 Saab SPG and it just has so much character...something most newer cars from any make have long lost. I guess I just prefer older cars to begin with.

Just remember, they were investing heavily in turbocharging back when Ford and GM where making crap V8s with like 150hp (gas crisis lol) and even the Japanese where barely starting to think about using turbos.

That said, the new 9-5 is a definite improvement over the older one, but it still can't compete with the 9-3 in terms of looks.
