GM May Bring the Opel Insiginia to the US as a Cadillac

opel_insignia_new.jpg
Now that Saturn is all but dead in a few years it looks like GM is trying to figure out to bring its impressive Opel Insignia to the US. Originally the next-generation Saturn Aura would have been our version of the Insignia, but instead the sedan could come here as a Buick or Cadillac.

Automotive News is reporting that the Insignia is set to hit US dealerships under the Buick brand as a replacement for the discontinued Regal sedan. But the fact that the Insignia shares the same front-wheel-drive platform as the next-generation LaCrosse, it may not make much sense. Instead GM may bring the Insignia to the US under the Cadillac brand, which could feature both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.

Sandman:

Nice looking car. Yes, please destroy the Regal.

TR is a bit slow. No news on GM skipping the bailout money this month. Good for them.

macer:

another great blunder by GM. Were tanking but lets keep good cars that would sell away from the North American Market.....

Everything went down hill when they killed the oldsmobile.

They made the wrong decision to save the Buick and slay the Olds..........

Trooper Bri:

I dunno macer. I don't have the numbers, but i'm guessing Saturn has better sales than Buick over the past 5 years or so. Oldsmobile didn't even have an original platform at the time of death. It was just H, W, and N bodies if i remember correctly. Plus the re-badged T-10 Blazer.

If GM has enough successful Opel platforms overseas, why not axe Buick too, then introduce the Opel line itself (un-molested) to America? I'd hate to see the Insignia get the dull Buick treatment, and don't see how it would fit into the Caddy lineup either.

Christ, i'm as confused as them. No wonder Ford has their head above water still.

Bradford:

Oldsmobile really didn't have anything special, so O well to that division.... 2 of theire vehicles, the Bravada and the Silouette [minivan] both hade TERRIBLE crash test raitings just to start off.

This "Opel Insiginia" looks kinda slick. It wouldnt fit in as a Chevy at all, and I also really don't think it has a home in the Buick division either. I mean, Buick already has the LaCrosse and Lucerne. Thats enough for them [Enclave included]. Their an old people brand.

My question is what is going to replace the Cadillac Seville Touring Sedan [STS]? If their is a fill in spot for that position, then this car might be perfect. Heck, isnt the Deville Touring Sedan [DTS] suppost to get the axe? This Insiginia would be a great fill in!

Also is Pontiac going to survive? Shoot, my honost opinion which might work would be to kill that division off and put that 6.0 V-8 under the hood of the G8 under the hood of the Chevy Impala. The Impala's SS is a 5.3, but that 6.0 would be sick.

SteelCity1981:

They want to bring in this car after the fact that they are facing bankruptcy? Oh what a great move by GM. Lets bring in cars that we should have brought over to the U.S. 3 or 4 years ago now..........

Bradford:

... agreed ...

Mr. D:

GM - - - Stands for "Gone Mad"

I just don't understand the reasoning behind some of the decisions that they have been making lately. Some I agree with, but for the most part it's like.... "what?"

That said, while the Opel Insiginia is a nice looking vehicle I don't think that there is anything there that makes it stand out from the rest of the vehicles currently on the market. Once it is Americanized it will become more bland.

My 2-cents.

t_r_nelson:

That's a great idea, GM! Let's get rid of one line/model and bring in another.

Isn't that part of the problem with GM is all the different brands? Look at Honda, Toyota, Nissan, VW, etc. Have two or three lines (low, mid, high). Make the lines world-wide.

It will increase brand loyalty and limit the expense. Right now, they have groups to redesign the metal to make it a Buick, Pontiac, Saturn, Chevy, or a Cadillac. Get it down to say, Chevy, Buick and Cadillac. Leave the trucks to GM and Chevy.

BUT...whatever GM would do, leave the Corvette alone. Hell, make that it's own group.

Avatar:

L76 will not fit in the Impala. The Impala is still based off the W-body platform, which is FWD only. This means only the LS4 can be in it since the LS4 was designed to be transverse mounted. The Impala was slated to Zeta along with the STS/DTS replacement, but cafe canned those plans. So, blame the government on that one.

As for this being a Cadillac, wouldn't it make more sense to keep Cadillac all RWD/AWD at this point instead of going back to the FWD days again...

Chris:

This shoudl be the next Malibu, the new buick lacrosse already looks very much like the Insignia.

Making this a cadillac would kill the entire edgy, TS design flow of caddy.

GM effs up again.

mickk:

i agree i would rather see the other old folks brand Buick go before Saturn. heck Pontiac is the other brand that has rebaged cars plus the Toyota Matrix remake

Gondo:

Nice looking car...almost sort of a Nissan Maxima type car.

Now why doesn't GM ditch every brand, and make nice cars like this under the GM name, across the world. Make them reliable like japanese...then they will have a seller.

Joan of Arc:

It looks more like a Buick. FWD wouldn't budge the purchasing decision of your typical old Buick buyer.

This as a Cadillac is just silly. It isn't rough and tough, no sharp lines, no bold in-your-face attitude. This would look better as a Japanese mobile, not as a Cadillac.... yikes.

They are confused..

Noya:

@ everyone,

Buick is HUGE in China, so I doubt they're going to kill the brand here. Think back to the 20's through 40's here in the US, Buick was "the" car to have. Now that China is in it's industrial/financial revolution, apparently GM does know how to market (or the Chinese watch a lot of OLD American movies).

Sandman:

@Noya

RTFA!!! It only talks about replacing US models.

Icester:

To all of those wondering about GMs market decisions> GM's decisions make perfect sense! Remember, they don't have to make a profit! Hard year? Stupid decisions? No problems. Let's spell it together.... B - A - I - L - O - U - T !!!

There is no incentive to be successful because the government has squashed that notion by throwing money at them whenever they ask.

Perzy:

I dont understand the reasoning (if it's true). Opel are a low-cost brand in Europe and absolutely not a premium brand like M-B or BMW. Sticking a luxury badge on it...?

Why don't GM use their Saab-models instead, which is way more premium cars. GM's policy with saab has been all over the place thru the years, GM headquarters must be a real henhouse!

GM should have done an "Audi" with Saab = based on cheaper parts (Opel/VW) but more costly in interior and some key components.
But GM never committed to it and expected Saab to build a premium car with Opel money.
