Chevy Camaro Convertible Delayed and Z28 Canceled

The 2010 Chevy Camaro is finally starting to roll off the production line, but there are rumors that two of the hotly anticipated variants are in jeopardy.

The Detroit Bureau is reporting that the Camaro convertible and Z28 variants are being delayed and may eventually be canceled due to the budget crisis hitting GM and its many suppliers. The main issue with the Camaro convertible has to do with the collapse of the German company that was supposed to supply it. It was originally planned that the convertible would launch about a year after the coupe, but since GM now has to seek a new supplier, the convertible could be delayed even further.

As for the Z28, it may just cost too much to produce according to Gene Stefanyshyn, Camaro’s Vehicle Line Executive. Stefanyshyn estimated that it would cost GM approximately $50 million to bring it to market. The Z28 would have featured well over 500 horsepower and would have been the halo car for the Camaro lineup.

Z28 well over 500hp? Trying to push into Mustang KR territory huh? Domestic pony wars are awesome.

Jeremy:

I hope that GM can find another supplier, I liked the convertible.

Brian:

Wow and I remember when the old F body Mustangs only had like 240 from the factory...

426Hemi:

Yet agen, another Camaro is delayed and another high-end model is canceled.

sparky:

I liked the convertible.....Dam.

ianz:

why not just buy a z06 instead of the z28? can't imagine a 500 hp camero will be that much cheaper than the z06. The vette is better looking, and since the camero is a new model, the vette will be much more reliable.

Allen:

Its been reported that the Z28 was canceled before. I don't believe it.

RX-7 Guy:

The SS is fine plus adding a supercharger or LS7 would cost less. I honestly don't think GM was going for more than $45k for the Z28. The convertible is a downer but this could be a marketing move in a hope to boost sales now.

I wish they would have gone retro with the emblems though the new style sucks.

Even used C6 Z06's are around $50k and the ride is very harsh. Now if they went with the ZR1 setup that would make more sense.

Patrick:

According to the last MotorTrend, GM was thinking of putting the CTS-V's LSA in the Z28 because it is cheaper to produce than the LS7. Hey, I'd pay a premium for 550bhp.

well i think these days its just a war to see who can actually stay in business..

also, how many people wanna bet that tomorrow theres gonna be an article called "Camaro z28 will NOT be cancelled"

vtfo0lio:

@RX-7 Guy

The z06 is very harsh? HA! Those FD RX-7's don't ride like caddies either pal! Just Kidding :) Besides, harshness is relative. Some can handle it, some can't. I'm fine with harsh rides; I just want the thing to corner flat.

SteelCity1981:

These Camaro's might be instant classics, if oops I mean when GM goes belly-up. :)

Rick Wag:

Overall shape looks great. Front grille and interior looks like crap. Can't get the whole package right?

Jung:

My mullet is itching!

Patrick:

these will look nice in the trailer parks.
