Nissan has finally unveiled the GT-R SpecV after months of speculation.
The special edition GT-R SpecV features a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a carbon fiber grille, and carbon fiber brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body color and the inside features a unique two-seat interior that has Recaro carbon fiber bucket seats.
There is only one main engine modification, a new high gear boost controller that increases the amount of compressed oxygen entering the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 to deliver more torque in the intermediate-to-high speed ranges.
Sales begin in Japan at seven pre-selected dealers, with pricing set at 15,750,000 yen. There is no word yet on if the car is headed to our shores.
PRESS RELEASE:
Nissan Announces New GT-R SpecV Model
TOKYO (Jan. 8, 2009) -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced a new limited-production Nissan GT-R SpecV model, which goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan on February 2, 2009. The GT-R SpecV is targeted specifically at enthusiast drivers who desire race car-level performance in a street-legal vehicle.
NISSAN GT-R SpecV
NISSAN GT-R SpecV
Developed around the multi-dimensional Nissan GT-R sports car, which was introduced just more than one year ago to universal global acclaim, the new SpecV model builds on the original's "ultimate supercar that anyone can enjoy driving anywhere, at anytime" philosophy - taking it to an entirely new level of "oneness between man and machine." The SpecV model includes unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications, raising the GT-R's unmatched performance to even higher levels.
The GT-R SpecV's new exterior features include a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a carbon fiber grille, and carbon fiber brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body color. Inside, the SpecV's unique two-seat interior (non-SpecV GT-R models also include a two-place rear seat) offers special Recaro carbon fiber bucket seats, while carbon fiber insets embellish the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.
Performance is enhanced with a new high gear boost control device, which momentarily increases boost of the engine's twin turbochargers for greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed ranges to provide a more powerful feeling of acceleration, while also allowing the engine to operate at a lower speed for improved fuel economy. Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes that provide powerful stopping performance.
The GT-R SpecV is also equipped with lightweight, racing-style forged aluminum wheels that were developed for this model and have been sold by Nissan Motorsports International (NISMO) since September 2008. The lighter unsprung weight provided by the new wheels, together with the enhanced braking capability, an exclusive suspension and high-grip tires, combine to deliver the SpecV's exceptional performance.
The SpecV will be sold at the following seven dealer outlets, each of which is staffed by mechanics with special GT-R SpecV training and who are knowledgeable of racing circuit driving.

Soooooo... in other words, it runs more boost.

More boost over the GT-R and some carbon fiber bits for about $85,000 more then the standard one?

Yeah all the fanbois were up in arms when the Vette beat it round the track. Swore up and down that the SpecV would be so much better. Oh well. Better off with the standard GT-R. Should be a few upgrades for less than $85k soon enough to make up the difference between the SpecV.

Better off staying away from this car period!
They give you the option to turn off the VDC,however when you do,it shreds the tranny. A nice little $20k repair that Nissan will not honor. There have been quiet a few reports of this.
If you really want the best bang for a buck, and want that with 4 wheels, the 'vette is the way to go

those rims just look like cheap aftermarket rims... i was hoping for a better performance boost but maybe this is all they can get outa that V6. I would like to know how much lighter it is.

I like the standard model better, appearance-wise. The wheels and carbon-fiber wing are tacky.

I take issue with this statement;
"Ultimate supercar that anyone can enjoy driving anywhere, at anytime" philosophy - taking it to an entirely new level of "oneness between man and machine."
True, it prevents you from spinning the wheels at launch, prevents you from power slides, prevents you from blowing up the transmission, prevents you from under/over steer, prevents you from... errr. umm. knowing how to drive. Anyone, including my grandma, can drive this car. As far as "Ultimate", bleh.
If this is "oneness between man and machine", it would be in reverse of what BMW and Vette performance stands for. yikes. I want to be part of the car, it is an extension of yourself and your skill (abviously in more ways than one). I don't want to simply sit in the car and let it do all the work. But hey, whatever.
Here is my analogy. Vette is more like a DOS command line based system and the GT-R (Spec-whatever) is like a GUI interface system.
vette: C:/ Pedal -power=full -slide = true -fun = max -Traction = off
GT-R: Click here to start (iPod = check, bluetooth cell = check, temperature = 72, hold on and have a nice day!).
Now, all those jap-car-lovers that love to post and bash the various versions of the Mustang with 'minor' improvements, will they be mute on this? Probably. Oh I can hear them now; "dare to compare any domestic car with this" lol.
Flame away.
Peace

$85K for those upgrades is beyond greedy.

Some other food for thought. If the VSpec is simply uping the boost, what stopped Nissan from doing this during track testing at the Ring and reviewers reviewing the car, finding it is making more power then it should.
Also interesting that they would more then double the price of the GT-R for pretty much nothing. So maybe the rumors about Nissan not making money on the GT-R have more merit now.

So what is the total weight savings over the base model? If it somehow managed to shave 300lbs or more off of the car, and if its pushing enough boost to pump it up 100+HP, then I guess it worth the Spec V designation, though probably not the huge sticker price. Although even at that price, its only expensive compared to the base because the base is an incredible bargain.

I didn't realize it was $171797.33 USD, are you nuts? Wow.. Some aftermarket Recaro seats and carbon fiber molded trim to go with the cheezy slider covering the drink holders. Vette will still spank it's carbon fiber rear spoiler. lol..

All I have to say is put this in your youtube search
ZR1 Smokes GT-R: Chevy Corvette ZR1 vs. Nissan GT-R
Nissan wont take a stock GT-R ring ever for fear of reality. Their car at the ring was almost certainly making more power than what the showroom cars make. Their engineering samples sent to the reviewer displayed an amazing 480+ HP on a chassis dyno the production car only 406. Guess what, that happens to be the typical 15% loss, still very impressive for an AWD car. I guess this smoke and mirrors is cool in a way. The dyno numbers on the vette show a 20% loss. Comparing this with the well documented results of the Z06 which frequently show only a 12% drop may indicate that the ZR1 tested was a little weak. The typical corrected dyno results frequently show about a 15% loss. Google away guys those are all facts from repituble review sites.
Otherwise throw in an aftermarket programming and give your GT-R 600HP just don't expect the power train to be able to handle it for anytime. Also while the Z06 and ZR1 enjoy the reliability of a typical production car expect the GT-R to share the track record of every other techno magic sports car, pure crap. I doubt a single one makes to 100k without a major component failing. As side note GM supports you tracking a vette while Nissan will void the warranty if you let that slip and that should tell you something.

Its not much to look at. Frankly, I think the new Mustang and the Genesis coupe are better looking. Sure its a handmade supercar and can run circles around anything but a ZR1, but look at it. Bleh!
Another thing, in several of the reviews I have read or watched people are blown away with its power and handling, but they almost all call it a boring car to drive once you get over what is basically a computer controlled supercar driving experience. One of them said it felt like driving in a computer game simulation. Who wants to spend that kind of money for a carnival ride.

Rx-7 guy: actually, my GT-R made almost 430whp right off the showroom floor. Nissan claims that their transmission has fewer drivetrain losses than is common... whether it's true or not that the ring car was a ringer, I don't know another GT-R owner that has dyno'ed their car stock, so I can't say.
Having spent about 4 months now trying to wring some extra hp out of it, the $80k extra for the V spec while not cheap seems about right depending on what the extra hp and weight reduction is. This isn't a civic, tuning is pricey! I've spent about $20k trying to find more power, which unlike what one of the above posters claimed did absolutely nothing to the tranny. I'm sitting at 528whp now, and have had no trouble putting the power to the ground. Hp wise I should be close to the ZR1, if I ever run into one at the track (or a stoplight) I'll let you know how it goes.
Sparky: I can spin my tires just fine thank-you... in fact a hard launch from a stop gets the rear tires spinning for a bit until the computer sends enough torque forwards to get moving. I can power slide tail out on the track, lock up my tires, and do all of the things you imply it can't simply because Nissan programmed the GT-R to be a track car, and the nannies aren't fun stoppers, they are designed to prevent you from being a ham fisted dipshit, and totalling your car. I believe the vette has a similar system, just not quite as comprehensive as the GT-R's.
I like the vette as well, and am not about to claim "my car is better" I think they are both amazing machines, but I voted with my wallet of the GT-R, and have been thrilled so far.

Let us know how well the trans holds up and for how long.
As for drive train loss, the most efficient setup on there is probably the Vette. The trans is strapped right to the rear axle. Autos have a little more loss then manuals do to there nature. AWD also has greater drive train loss then 2WD. At 430 to the wheels, that means 10% loss. Vettes normally get around 13% drive train loss. So that just sounds like more Nissan Kool-Aid.

I'm pretty sure that you are correct when you say it is Nissan kool aid. I'd guess that the engine should be rated closer to 520hp. While I would love to believe that an AWD tranny is only causing a 10% drivetrain loss, if it were true, Nissan would have this technology into every one of their cars so quick it would make your head spin.
2 months at 528whp, including 5 track events, one of which was a 6 hour endurance race. Nissan seems to have overbuilt the tranny, probably in anticipation of the Vspec. I did bump up the tire width by 20mm all around, but that would put an even bigger strain on the tranny not less.
I'll let you know if I trash the tranny, but so far, no problems at all.

Waste of money. They are following the Porsche route by offering a couple pounds of boost and little other crap and charging big bucks for it. No wonder Porsche is one of the most profitable car companies around.
Most all of us enthusiasts on this site would usually buy a base model if it had the same engine/drivetrain as the top end model because most of us know better. Its cheaper to modifiy the base car to handle/accelerate better than the top end model and usually the top end models have extra doodads that make it heavier ex. Navigation, heated seats, sunroof, etc, etc - 350z base/track vs 350z touring/premium(?) comes to mind. Though some manufacturers throw kinks in the chain by offering a totally different engines for their top end models - base corvette vs z06 vs ZR1 - then you're just screwed. I was told that it's hard to make extra power off the ZR-1 though due to it being a high strung LS3 on boost. Anyone care to confirm?

@vtfo0lio
ive seen ls3's on 29 pounds of boost the zr1 is only 12psi so im sure it can handle alot more, but why would you want that. then it wouldnt handle like a dime

LS9 is built for way more power then an LS3. LS9 uses titanium for push rods, values, springs, etc. It also has all forged internals compared to an LS3 which doesn't. Different heads and larger values. Then there is the 12 rib fan belt which is way over kill. It has a dry sump oil system as well.
GM didn't make it easy to get/swap out the stock pulley from what I read. But, they built the engine to handle more then it is right now and like muscleoverrice said, it is only peaking at 12 psi stock. A lot more room to go.
The LS3 and LS9 pretty much share the same block and that is it.

Wow, your are an idiot. I search ZR1 vs GT-R videos and get The Ring videos, in which the ZR1 beat the GT-R, then a bunch of "ZR1 Smokes GTR Chevy Corvette ZR1 vs Nissan GTR" as well as "ZR1 Drag Race King - Spanks GTR, 599, and GT2".
As for the Viper ACR, it is a stock car sold from Dodge like the GT-R. If you wanted to talk performance levels, then the Viper ACR is nothing more then some weight reduction, street legal racing tires, and a body kit. The engine is exactly the same as the stock Viper engine and makes no more power in the ACR.
The V-Spec is a joke of a car, twice the cost for a little more boost and a little weight reduction, read back seats removed and some carbon fiber bits. Again, if the V-Spec is nothing more then a little more boost, what has stopped Nissan from upping the boost in those test cars they had flying around the world which were dynoing as high as 480 whp. They could have also easily done this for the Ring run in which it went from 7:38 to 7:29. And they said it was 2 damp corners? Then turn around and Porsche gets 7:54 with a GT-R off the show room floor. ZR1 got 7:26 and GT-R V-Spec apparently gets 7:25. ZR1 didn't run in perfect conditions on that run.
But it doesn't really matter since the V-Spec costs more then 60% more then the ZR1 does. LMAO. Moral of the story, Viper ACR and ZR1 are still the kings when it comes to bang for the buck.
