SEMA 08' Preview: Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe Unveiled

2009_pontiac_solstice_gxp_coupe_sema08.jpg
GM officially unveiled the Pontiac Solstice Coupe at the New York Auto Show earlier this year and now the automaker is going to show off a GXP version of the coupe at this year's SEMA show.

The production Solstice Coupe is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder that puts out 260 horsepower. For the GXP version GM Performance Parts added its Stage 2 performance kit and a performance air intake kit to bring the final number up to 290 horsepower. The car also features a new cat-back exhaust system and new suspension kit.

The final touch is a Hydro Blue racing strip running down the middle of the car.

A new turbo kit, a new air intake and new exhaust somehow only bumps it up 30HP? What a waste of time. Plus the coupe looks pretty ugly, and I like the roadster.

Umm, Stage II from GMPP is only a tune, not a new turbo. It keeps your warranty when installed by GM and is 50 state legal. This is reason for conservative numbers on the gain in power.

Reminds me of a baby Viper...

Maybe it's just how the photo was taken, but the car looks odd compared to the regular Solstice. I'm not keen on where the hood seam meets the door seam. Side window seems pinched down where it meets the windshield pillar. Maybe they had to do that or it would look too much like a Viper.

While i do like the vintage European curves of the Solstice, i also have a neighbor who owns a Sky. I'll take it over the Solstice any day. Looks more like a Corvette, and doesn't have that Pontiac grill that i'm so sick of seeing.

Waiting for more pics, including the Saturn version.

AWD and convertible and you'd have a poor mans TTS.

HERBY...I MISSED YOU SO!

Oh please, Herby would rip this thing a new one.

@ Trooper,

Of course the windows look small, that door is like 3 feet high.

I don't know if they engineers have anything to do with that, or if it is some new design thing. Cars used to have a roughly 60/40 (maybe 65/35) ratio of door to window. This usually made it comfortable to ride with you arm sitting on the window (in the down position of course). Now you are cars with more like 65+ ratio and your elbow is almost up to your shoulder... This thing is like 70/30 or more. You see people's head and that's it. WTF. This is a small car with crap ass visibility cause you are sitting so low (and it's not like it's even a low/small car (aka Lotus Elise)).

The Miata is just about the only small coupe that hasn't gone this route, and I think it will just be a matter of time.

Sometimes I think the designers and engineers spend to much time modeling the crash physics to figure out if this is even a style that looks acceptable.
