Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Named 2009 European Car of the Year

The news has been pretty grim over at GM the past few weeks, but one thing the automaker can celebrate is that the 2009 Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia has been named the 2009 European Car of the Year.

The Insignia achieved the award by a mere one point (321) over the 2nd place finisher, the Ford Fiesta (320). The bronze winner was the VW Golf with 223 points. This is the first win for the Opel brand in 22 years.

“We are extremely proud the Insignia has been named Car of the Year,” said Hans Demant, Managing Director of Opel and Vice President of Engineering for General Motors Europe. “This is confirmation of the hard work of our designers, engineers and workers; and their commitment to quality that makes the Insignia a true flagship for our brand.”

21 out of 23 of the 23 journalists that decided the award voted for the Insignia as the number one vehicle.

The Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia is going to be the basis for the next Saturn Aura.

jebus:

looks like a cheap hybrid between the mercedes (front) and beamer (rear)

BigO:

To all the Big Three haters out there, I'd like to point out that GM took the number one spot, and Ford the #2, and no crap Japanese car took third, but a solid German engineered Vdub.

I'm not saying GM and Ford should be ruling the world, they made the mistakes to get where they are, but why can't they just learn from their European Success.

ZzjitterzZ:

What?? You're high. The only part that looks like a BMW is that stupid Bangle Butt, which is now being sported by a lot of cars. The Toyota Camry has one, for crying out loud. So would you say a Camry looks like a BMW? I think not.

It's a fine looking car, and for one I'm glad GM is bringing over its European designs to the States.

Hater:

Good call Zz, Jebus is on crack!

It looks a bit like a Solara to me from the back (which I don't particularly like). I love the interior though.

GM is producing these products just in time for their big debut of "Mr. Wagoner goes to Washington".

Josh:

Perfect example of why GM's management needs to be fired. Their European cars look quite nice. Any reason this isn't sold stateside? Hmm, pure stupidity.

Shows how much an idiot like BigO can comprehend, why would a japanese car be entered in a European car competition in the first place? What a stupid ass...

SteelCity1981:

Because japanese cars are sold in Europe too dumbass.

ToTheTop:

"Because japanese cars are sold in Europe too dumbass."

A Japanese car made in Japan and sold in Europe is still a Japanese car. A car made in Europe by a European company is a European car. I hope I haven't confused you.

You have egg on your face, but don't sweat it; the anonymity of the internet guarantees that your epic face plant will soon be forgotten, eclipsed by another dip-shitticus with greater aspiration for the nonsensical.

SteelCity1981:

"dip-shitticus with greater aspiration for the nonsensical."

What's that old saying again? "Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it."

Toyota has an assembly plant in Europe and so does Honda.
Seriously, get your facts straight so that you don’t look like a dumbass next time.

ToTheTop:

A car made in Europe by a European company is a European car.

...because you missed it again. Toyota also has plants in America. Are their cars American?

"What's that old saying again? "Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it."

...because here you are again. You should have stopped the first time you made a fool of yourself. If you'd like, I'll facilitate the perpetuation of your fuck-upery by replying.

It took you long enough to Google your 'facts' dingus. I've been watching.

SteelCity1981:

You have to be the biggest idiot on these forums; did you not see who came in first and second? GM and Ford and guess where they are from? America. Is a company like Ford cosiderd European? No. Your statements are not only hypocritical, but contradicting.

It took me long enough to Google my facts? For starters I didn't need to Google my facts unlike you should have should have. Second of all, Anyone that knows anything about the automotive industry would know that these car companies have plants in Europe. Lastly It was you that made that idiotic statement that stated that they don't make Japanese cars in Europe.

You've been watching yourself look like an even bigger idiot? Well I guess I’m not the only one that has. Ha, I should have stopped? That's funny considering you keep on digging yourself into a bigger hole.

Avatar:

Wow, glad I didn't have to deal with the idiot for once.

Anyway, GM does bring Opel's and Vauxhall's over as American cars. The company is known as Saturn. In fact, the Aura is a re-badged Vecta, and an Insignia is simply the Epsilon II version of a Vecta which stops production this year. Epsilon II will be seen stateside in 2009 starting with the new Buick LaCrosse as a 2010 model. Better check again jOSH.

funny people:

you guys are all idiot.....is there anything better you guys can argue? Give u a crap American car, will you take it?
Give u a re-badge Euro car and tell you this is American car..will u take it? I remember someone bitching about the Saturn Aura is a POS, why? You guys better go smoke something better....

John Campi:

Some of you guys amaze me. This is the reason GM USA is in trouble. Their management is just plain stupid. They should import this car and sell it. The design execution is fantastic. I love the exterior styling and the interior is well done. This vehicle could compete with the likes of Lexus or Infiniti. The big three just don't seem to be able to learn from anything. I'd hate to see the big three domestic auto companies fail, but sometimes I wonder if we should just let it happen. They don't ever seem to learn.

SARS:

You guys are a pathetic lot. No wonder your country has crap managers judging by what is going-on on top.

On topic:
'The Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia is going to be the basis for the next Saturn Aura'

Why introduce a new brand (18 years ago with an 'euro-influence' )if you can just sell Opels. Some f...-up marketing guy, no doubt.
Waste of money.
Saturn will probably end-up with agri-dails and woodgrain.

A George:

Toyota Prius was the 2005 European Car of the Year - so "Japanese" cars (made in europe by a japanese company) can compete too!!
But I really doubt many trophy winners are true indicators of a cars quality and success

Avatar:

Said it before, say it again. Saturn was a knee jerk reaction to the Japanese in the 80s who were selling small cars. Saturn started as just small cars. In 2000, it started re-badging Opel's and trying to move up market. It failed, because despite the fact that they are their European cousins, America doesn't see them that way. They just stereo type them as an 'American POS'.

Yet including yourself in the comments by making this remark isn't pathetic? Nice.....

phil:

goodness, that car looks nice. Why can't they sell cars like that in the States? A car like this proves GM is capable.
