Next Audi S5 to Ditch V8 in Favor of a Supercharged V6

An Audi spokesperson recently told InsideLine that the next Audi S5 is going to feature a V6 engine rather than a V8 when it is released in 2009.

The next S5 is going to get the same 329 horsepower supercharged V6 engine as the recently introduced Audi S4.

"Not only does this new engine get nearly the same horsepower and more torque," said an Audi spokesperson, "but the fuel efficiency with the V6T improves by 30 percent over the V8."

Next the Audi S6 is expected to swap out its V10 engine for an updated twin-turbocharged version of the 4.2-liter V8.

The V6 turbo is also expected in the mid-engined R4.

bonesoverbrains:

ugly car especially now that it doesnt have a V8

Luka:

It's better then joke called Mustang.

:)

Dirty McNasty:

Only an idiot would call this car "ugly".

Brian:

Something tells me this has to be more of a production minimization than, "people want better gas mileage". This is the cream of the crop Audi 5, at this price point the price for fuel is not really a concern for most people.

Maybe Audi is just eliminating higher overhead, slower selling engines from it's line up.

D!:

Nearly the same horsepower, more torque, and 30% better fuel economy? Sounds like a winner to me.

Only an idiot would care if there's a "6" or an "8" after the "V." This car could be powered by grasshoppers for all I care as long as it pushes me into the seat when I hit the accelerator.

Also, this car is many things but ugly it is not. Not in any sense. The A5/S5 is gorgeous, especially in person.

Josh:

Wow, that seems like a fantastic idea. I am truly a fan of forced induction, and never really liked v8's to begin with. I can't wait to hear the supercharger whine on an S5 blasting by me. Will someone please loan me $60,000?

I actually also think its a little ugly. I usually don't mind Audi styling, but something about it is just wrong.

Noya:

Aggressive, yet classy.

Definitely one of the top three best looking cars in its price range.

Though, I don't think dropping the 4.2L, 7,000rpm DOHC V8 is a smart move. Supercharging a factory $50k+ car always seemed kind of cheap to me, which is probably why I dislike the limited edition Mustangs and ZR1 (besides the fact they're so cheaply built).

Joan of Arc:

I love turbochargers... I've never driven a supercharged car, but the turbo V8 aught to be killer. I love the low end power, and would like to drive the turboed V8.

Heck, as long as it performs, I could care less how it manages to do it.

Allen:

The thing is, the S-lineup has always been about that fantastic 4.2 L V8. Its one of the best engines ever made, in the top ten, barring none.

The V6 will still only move the car faster if they put it on a diet, and that's where I'm afraid it will all go wrong. Audi will likely increase the weight of the car to fit more frivolous bells and whistles into the car.
