How about mileage? From my understanding the 2.5L is a stroked version of the 2.3L (I may be wrong, if so I pre-apologize). Have they retuned it or something? If it's roughly the same average mileage then great, if it is loosing a point or two for more power, why?
I thought about the Mazda 3 when it first came out, but ended up with a Corolla. Yeah, they really aren't the same, but gas mileage and long term reliability were the top concern, not "fun" factor. What I really wanted was a Subaru 2.5 RS coupe...

I'd guess mileage would be the same or better for both engines since what I've found other places say both the 2 liter and 2.5 liter engines will have direct injection.

why do you need such big engine in such a small car?
Is it because there is 400lbs of meat on board?

"meat"
I think you mean blubber...
And yes, I'm a chunky fat ass American.

Ok, now you're just trolling if you're claiming a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder is "a big engine". If it was a 3.5 liter V6, then you could argue it's overkill in a 2,700-ish pound car.

Wow, I am always impressed by mazda. The mazda three, when it first came out, was a winner because it was built on the volvo s40 platform, which accounted for the praised agility of the car.
Now mazda returns with a few unique gimmicks (at least in this market segment) --> "self leveling Bi-Xenon headlights, adaptive front lighting system, push-button start and Bluetooth"
Will it work again?

I like both what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing. As stated in the article, this is exactly the type of options people are looking for today in a car. Mileage figures and pricing would be nice but that'll come in due time but I'm sure that'll be on par for cars in this category but the MazdaSpeed 3 is even more exciting IMO. I want more info on that!

Aren't all HID headlights self levelling? It is a requirement here at least as well as inbuilt cleaners.
167HP for a 2.5L engine seems really low to me. They should be able to pull that from a 1.6/1.8L engine. Honda were getting more than that from a 1.6L engine back in '97. Sure a CTR tuned engine isn't as drivable, but that was back in '97, it pulled more power and had a much lower displacement. A 2L direct injection engine should be able to easily pull that kind of power without requiring you to rev the crap out of it.

@Hangman
You can easily get more horsepower out of that motor but it just wouldn't be worth it. Check the Civic SI for example, regular Civic gets 140hp and 129ft-lbs. of torque vs. the Civic SI which gets 197hp and 139ft-lbs. of torque naturally aspirated. Barely an increase in torque compared the increase in horsepower. Thats why you use a turbocharger which keeps the torque gain close to the horsepower gain.
Now to comment the article, I'm liking the new look. I can't wait to see what the Mazdaspeed3 specs are though.

I'm sure it weighs more than 2,700lbs.... my 2008 MINI Cooper S is in the realm of 2,700 lbs, unloaded, and it has a 1.6L 172HP motor, which isn't overkill.... it's just right, and the handling is awesome.
I'd say 167hp is just about right for a car like the Mazda3, as it "should" make it cake to drive everyday, and it won't be "cool" fast so your kids won't show off to their friends some Friday night.

2,700 for the sedan should be pretty damn accurate. I have a Protege, the predecessor to the Mazda 3, and it's 2,500 lbs and the current Mazda 3 sedan with the 2 liter engine is 2,600 lbs. The current Mazda 3 hatch with the 2.3 liter is 2,900 lbs.
