Jaguar is Planning an XF-based Roadster and Porsche Boxster Competitor

Now that Jaguar is no longer tied to Ford, we can expect some big changes from the automaker. Jaguar's new owner Tata Motors wants to add up to three new models to the Jaguar lineup.

The three new models could include a new coupe, a roadster based off the XF sedan and a new lightweight sports car that would compete with the Porsche Boxster. Tata has no plans to introduce a Jaguar SUV, since that would compete with its other brand, Land Rover.

According to sources the coupe is going to be unveiled next year and the roadster a year later. Both models will be positioned underneath the Jaguar XK in the lineup.

While Jaguar was under Fords wing I had visions of Ford using it's connections to Mazda to create a Jaguar/Miata mutant. Small, lithe chassis, smooth 6 cylinder power, nice upscale leather/wood interior appointments, and a healthy does of reliability. Would have been all win in my view.

Ah well. it looks like Jags new ownership will blaze their own path. It'll be interesting to see what comes of it.

sorry, i do not put jaguar and porsche in the same sentence.

Jaguar should focus on something that competes with S class, 7 Series, Audi 8, or Lexus LS.

Hanz, it's that kind of thinking that's gotten many companies in trouble - "we do X, and we don't do Y". While I agree that a company should focus on its strengths (luxury in Jaguar's case), I don't believe a company should stay stagnant.

Take Cadillac as an example - they used their strength and still took a little risk in revamping their look and lineup. If Jaguar wants to compete in that market, more power to them. But, they had better be serious about it. Else, Porsche will eat them for lunch.
