PRESS RELEASE:
World Debut for All-New Mazda3 Five-Door Hatchback at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show

HIROSHIMA, Japan: Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the world premiere of the new-generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show on December 3, 2008.

The second generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback follows on the heels of the four-door sedan revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The new-generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback adopts the same characteristics as its sedan counterpart, offering sporty driving and a dynamic design, together with top class environmental and safety performance.

Environmental-friendly qualities were top of mind during development, including efficient powertrains, Mazda typical lightweight engineering and amongst the best-in-class aerodynamics.

All petrol engine versions of the new-generation Mazda3 will offer even further advanced environmental performance, including the world's first vehicle catalyst to be constructed with single nanotechnology. This new development enables Mazda to reduce its use of scarce resources such as platinum and palladium.

The new engine lineup has been tailored for European customers and now includes the newly developed 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, just launched in the Mazda6. The new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine is a high-performance clean diesel powerplant with top class output, fuel economy and refinement.

This new-generation diesel engine has outstanding emissions performance and complies with Euro Stage5 regulations. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are also greatly improved compared to the current 2.0-litre version.

The all-new Mazda3 five-door hatchback will be revealed during Mazda's press conference at 09:00am on December 3, 2008 (local time).

I will have to see it face to face, next time I go to the dealership but initially not liking what I see. I like the new rx-8 face lift it looks better, but not this. The interior is a big improvement on on both the rx-8/ mazda 3.

The older mazdaspeed3 looks like a better choice now that I see this. New speed3 should not be far behind hopefully a different design choice. Wanting a mazdaspeed6 though anyone own one can tell me what they think.

GT:

Mazdaspeed version does not perform better then my GTR.

426Hemi:

@GT
"Mazdaspeed version dose not performe better then my GTR."

Yes but it dose cost a LOT less.

Tom T:

The pictures they released are terrible at showing what the car really looks like. The pictures are at such sharp angles that most of the cars lines are hidden. And all the glare and reflection hide more than the masking on most spy/camouflaged cars. It is almost if they are intentionally trying to hide something.

I like the look of the current generation 3 but not sure about this without seeing it in person. I'm not a fan of those binocular eye instrument clusters though. Neither on this one or the previous generation.

ewww whats with mazdas new corporate grill it looks like braces or something retarded like wtf they did a good job with the new 6 but the new plastic thing they puttin on the grill looks horendous

GoAutoCraze:

The new hatch, like the sedan, should get either the 2.0-liter four cylinder engine with 148 HP and 135 lb-ft of torque or a new 2.5-liter four pumping out a sweet 167 HP and 168 lb-ft of torque.

Brian:

I'm frankly disappointed. 2.5L, blah Subaru has been doing that for years. Where's the 2.6 or 2.7? Come on this is Ameri-land, where bigger is always better.

You know you'd probably get similar mileage and possibly better performance from a turbo'd version of the 2.0...

It would just cost more to make...

longdxcommuter:

@Brian:

I am more aggravated that we cannot get the diesel here.

5thgear:

@longdxcommuter:

plus 1 on the diesel! whats up with that... alot of us are looking for cool lookingand fun cars with good economy, why do they not get that. I demand more diesel!

The Man From Utopia:

"Why do they not get that. I demand more diesel!"

Don't blame the car makers that we can't have Diesel Cars in the USA, My understanding is that The US Government (EPA) with it's super strict regulations for passenger cars (higher than Europe) are making it difficult to get these cars here. I noticed that Volkswagon is one of the few that have been able to meet the regulatons, but not many others.

Travis:

I also want the diesel to come stateside the hot version of the 2.2 makes 182 hp and 302 ft-lbs which I am betting would put up some pretty nice performance figures while returning good economy.

Arthur Pappas:

Where in the name of God is the diesel for North America?!?!?!

Allen:

Methinks that they would've done better adding a small turbo to the 2.0L that by making the 2.3 a 2.5L. Guess they didn't want anyone trying to tune a standard model into a MazdaSpeed3 though.

Allen:

Anyone else see some Ford Focus (old Focus) in the sheet metal on this thing? No?

Somehow, I do. *cocks head, stares at pictures* Can't place it, but I do.

Allen:

Armrest console is the same, but the dash is more like a Toyota now. Not sure if I'm sold on that. CD player and audio controls reminds me of a few General Motors vehicles I don't like...

Yet somehow, it all comes together very well. Its certainly not as good as others in its category, but the interior is live-able.

SSGTi:

Diesels not comming to USA has nothing to do with regulations. VW was selling their end of life diesel engines in the USA so they could get rid of their obsolete parts. We are now talking about "clean" diesel, but in Europe, they had that 10 years ago.

Travis:

@ Allen

What interior are you looking at? The Mazda looks to be near class leading in that department to me, I mean it's class would be what, say these cars, Cobalt, Focus, Civic, Corolla, Lancer, Rabbit, Senta. I would say the Mazda is at the very top of that list, possibly behind the VW but then again who isn't.

lowest iq:

i'm now looking at this post for a few days.

what happened, did our young torque throw in the towel?

gm0n3y:

Is TR dead? Six days now with no new posts.

hunter:

YEA DIESELS. I have been in belgium for the past 3 months and personally i think we do need more diesels, i like them, well also diesel is cheaper over here....and performance wise i can not complain and also with fuel milage, but not to mention they were both a bmw 320d and 318d i liked the 320 better tho.
