2009 Nissan Versa Starts at $9,990, but Don't Expect Much at that Price

Last week Nissan announced a new entry Versa that starts at $9,990, which means its the cheapest car you can buy in the U.S. Although it starts below $10k, when you actually want A/C or any other "normally standard" features be prepared to pay more.

KickingTires, did some research into the pricing of the 2009 Versa 1.6 and discovered that the base model does not come with air conditioning, power windows or door locks, and a stereo. Reminds me of the base econo cars of the 80's and early 90's. Of course cruise control and a driver’s seat height adjustment are also missing. The standard model also has a manual transmission. The automatic transmission costs and extra $1,000, but requires that you also get a/c, which is $1,000 as well. After adding an auto transmission and a/c you're already at $12k.

Full Details:

-Versa 1.6 Base ($9,990) includes five-speed manual transmission, 14-inch wheels, manual mirrors/locks/windows, power steering, four-way adjustable cloth seats, six airbags, active head restraints

-Versa 1.6 ($10,990) adds A/C; four-speed automatic adds $1,000

-ABS package (antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist) adds $250

-Destination charge is $695

Andrew:

Why don't they just make it one color (white or black or silver). If they choose only one color, then that will also lower the price since you won't need to paint the cars different colors that may or may not sell.

Also rip out some of those airbags, if you must have them in there, the driver and passenger-side air bags should be all....

I would like to see a car that retails for around 8000.00 new... I know it can be done!

Hater:

yeah, don't expect the hood to fit at this pricepoint.

You're in luck Andrew.

The Chinese have recently devoloped a sub-compact car that is built using 70% recycled content based on melamine and lead derived products refused by the entire world. MSRP is rumored to be in the neighborhood of $7,500.

SteelCity1981:

So basicly you are getting an extremely overpriced Go-Cart.

Noya:

Again, the base Honda Civic and Honda Fit are easily the best small cars on the market in the $13k-14 range (pre-rebate invoice pricing- learn how to haggle).

George:

$8000 car
In India most of their top-of-the-line hatchbacks retail for around that or less than that - including desiel. Most of these are atleast Euro 3 certified.
the cheaper ones come for around USD 6000

This is a golf cart substitute and as desireable as a wart. Really, no stereo and still almost $10k? WTF? A cheap CD stereo is $40 and they can't offer at least an AM radio? wow. What else did the 'cut' out?

This may be the cheapest MSRP of cars in ths US, but good luck finding one at that price without options.

Having power windows and power seat options removed is understandable, having no AC is ok for some in colder areas, but this *stripped* car is a crude joke. Drive this off the lot and kiss $3k (30%) goodby.

Drop two doors, make it a hatchback, two colors (as stated before), add the AC and auto with a *cheap* cd stereo and maybe $10k is worth it. Otherwise, don't make this garbage...

Nabiturbo:

So what is the point of this article? None of the economy cars I've owned or test-driven have come with standard AC, auto, pw, pdl, cruise control. The article basically reiterates that the car with the $9k base is indeed the base model. Stunning revelation.

gm0n3y:

I wish more cars came with power everything (including steering) as an option. Same with auto trannies. The stereo is the only thing that should be included in every car (as mentioned, they are really cheap).

I would love a car that has no air bags, no power anything and is stick shift. A/C should be an option, though I would definitely take it. Even the stereo isn't a big deal, since the stock systems in econoboxes usually suck anyways. Just pop in a decent one. A car that weighs 2000lbs would be sweet.

lowest iq:

@sparky,

they also left out rear wheel brakes and there is no lock on the trunklid.
Mirrors are optional, but who is using those anyway...
And whats wrong with driving with the windows open?

At least there is a DVD included to explain the manual gearbox.

But i can still buy two Tata Nano's for this, and those smell like tandori chicken which is my favourite.
