2009 Nissan GT-R Named Motor Trend Car of the Year

Motor Trend has announced the winner of its 2009 Car of the Year award and this year the award goes to the 2009 Nissan GT-R.

Motor Trend had this to say about the 2009 GT-R:

"The GT-R puts Nissan on a map that thus far only designated Maranello, Sant’ Agata, Munich, and Stuttgart as points of interest,” said Motor Trend editor Ron Kiino. ”Well, it’s time to stick a tack on Tochigi. In the kingdom of supercars, the GT-R positively belongs. Be it comparing 0-to-60 sprints, quarter-mile times, 60-to-0 braking, or lateral acceleration, the GT-R is one of the world’s best.”

"Plainly put: No Nissan has ever been as formidable or as awesome as the GT-R. More significant, no other 2009 contender crushes our criteria like the GT-R. For that, it wholeheartedly deserves our Golden Calipers."

all 3 readers voted for it!

Josh:

I'm still only about 80% in love with the styling, but I can't deny its herculean performance. Great choice for COTY.

...only why is it so ugly again...

gm0n3y:

I seem to be in the minority on this site, but I actually like the looks. Its hard to deny that this is by far the best car released this year.

TrainRekS:

this car definitely deserves it.

let the hating begin.

sparky:

NIce car, to bad it's a Nissan.

adrian:

not stylish beautiful, but engineered beautiful.
audi r8 can turn men and lady heads, but not this one.
anyways, there's a lot out there that still can't accept that this jap car can beat a lot of euro and US cars.
if it only had more displacement, it can beat more than it had now.

Paul:

I'm not sure if Nissan lied about the horesepower output of the GTR or not, but I ran into something interesting while dyno'ing mine, which I've had for about 3 weeks now.
Typically, an AWD system takes about a 20% drivetrain loss from engine to wheels. so with 480HP, I should end up with a whp number of 360-384ish. Much to my surprise (and delight) over 3 runs it averaged 420 whp. So either Nissan's engineers worked some miracle of friction/force reduction in the GTR, or the 'real' HP figure for the GTR is closer to 520.

JB:

...or the chassis dyno is not calibrated. Every dyno is different, and 30 seconds worth of fiddling with the settings on the dyno computer can throw the numbers WAY off.

I wouldn't put too much faith in dyno results vs. published figures.

JB:

Tried a compltetly different dyno last night, basically same temp, humidity etc, and did about 1/2 a tank worth of gas in dyno runs. Once we finally fooled the GT-R's computer into thinking that it was on a real road and not a dyno. Consistently pulled 420-425 whp on 91 octane, as any 94 octane we get in town is ethanol blended which the GT-R does not like AT ALL!!!! One run it pulled 438whp, but that was one run out of close to 100.

note: I'm trying to establish a baseline number so when I make some mods I can figure out if they are helping or hindering the GT-R.

GTR LOVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

This car is sexy... But its okay there's alot of haters out there!!!!!!!
