Subaru has unveiled the very limited Impreza WRX STI 20th Anniversary Edition in Japan.
Although it would be easy to assume that this 20th Anniversary Edition has been built to celebrate 20 years of the STI, but the original STI was only released in 1994. Instead the 20th Anniversary Edition STI celebrates the 20th anniversary of the founding of Subaru Tecnica International, Subaru's performance division in Mitaka, Tokyo.
The anniversary edition costs about $4,720 more than the regular STI in Japan, but unfortunately the extra money doesn't yield any extra horsepower under the hood, since the limited edition STI is powered by the same Japan-spec. 304 horsepower turbo 2.0-liter engine. What you do get is new shocks and coil springs to sharpen the steering response and to make the car more agile. Outside 18-inch STI alloy wheels, matte-black roof spoiler and thin front lip spoiler separate the Anniversary Edition from the standard STI.
If you want to get one of them you better hurry since only 300 will be built for Japan only consumption.

I used to dream of getting an STi for my next car.......until this abomination came out this past year. Now the thought of Subaru makes me feel almost sick.

Come'on, the 2009 WRX sedan is pretty nice. 265hp, 0-60 in 5.1s, better handling than the 2008 (1st year of this body style) and $10k less than the STi.
Still, if you want monster performance for the street on the cheaper side, a 2001+ Miata with $5k in upgrades (including a turbo kit = 250+whp @ 2,200lbs) is pretty untouchable. I'm thinking about asking a gearhead friend if he wants to go halves and build one with me, especially since my local track (PiR) has open track days.

@ Totenglocke
I agree with you on this abomination. I did not dream of owning one...but I seriously thought about it a couple of times.

Too bad that it will get it's ass kicked by a Cobalt SS on the track for 10k less. So sad.

The new STi (should call it an STD with as bad as it looks!) is not only horribly ugly, but it also doesn't perform as well due to the extra weight.

stock for stock Cobalt SS can not bet and STI in anything lol, and the 2008 sti weight is 3,395 and 2005 is 3,263 not a huge dif but weight is huge on a track car.

265hp, 0-60 in 5.1s is pretty good for any car, even if it sounds and vibrates like a 2-stroke weed eater. I'm glad it can go fast, then I don't have to look at it for very long.
Sure is expensive lip stick, $4720, for this piglet.

@VR4Kid:
Perhaps you should do some research before posting. The recent issue of Car & Driver compares them and it's not even close. Not talking about in a straight line either but a 4+ mile road course. You should pick it up, it's pretty shocking how well the Cobalt SS stacks up for a non handling America car. You can also go to their website for the car summaries but I don't the think the times are posted there. Oh yeah, it was faster than the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR as well.
This special edition is a complete joke as it's likely never be worth much as far as a collector goes. Why would anyone buy one?

I love Subaru, and if I had money to burn (not on the car, but the tires and other things I want to due to it) I'd have one.
Well at this point I'd have a Legacy Spec-B, cause the STi looks like a turd. I don't care how fast it goes, or if it can teleport, it still looks like crap. You know not everyone likes hatches, some people like coupes. Subaru use to make STi coupes, 22B WRX Sti?
Subaru needs to due two things:
1. Fire the Alfa Romeo designers (if they haven't) that designed this, and the previous Impreza's, and B9 Tribeca (cring).
2. Get Toyota to design a kick ass coupe, and don't screw around with the power, we want at least 250 hp.
