The U.S. isn't getting the Chevy Cruze until 2011, but GM has recently introduced the car in South Korea as the Daewoo Lacetti.
The launch of the Lacetti in South Korea is the first market that one of GM's most important new cars has been launched in.
The Lacetti is powered by the same 1.6L engine that we will get that can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
Europe is going to get the sedan next year and the U.S. may get it in 2010, although it's been rumored that the we won't actually get it until 2011 as a 2012 model. By then the car will look old...

I don't understand marketing, nor do I pretend to. But if your market is dwindling in the US, doesn't it seem logical to release a newer model that might pick up sales there first? Does "WTF" mean anything to them?

So the car is ready for delivery...seems like a decent car... yet we still get the cobalt, wich is already old compare to competition, and they do need to bring buyers back... yet again, Gm's philosophy "lets keep giving north america some cheap low quality car.. they'll buy it anyways"

Actually, I think it would make more sense to test the Cruze out in a foreign market first. The current Chevy Cobalt is generally seen as a pretty decent car, but in fact it was basically "version 2.0" of GM's Delta-platform cars...the orginal Delta car was the much-despised Saturn Ion. I'm sure the Cobalt would be nowhere near as good as it is if GM brought it out before they worked out all the kinks with the Ion.
The nice thing about the Cruze debuting as a Daewoo in Korea is that this time we don't even have to put up with another Saturn Ion.

"The current Chevy Cobalt is generally seen as a pretty decent car" @ Dave
WTF are you talking about? It's a rental grade cheapy that looks a decade old. Maybe it's because I don't live in the Midwest or South, but I don't know anyone who would buy a Cobalt over it's competition.

Thankfully they had the foresight to call it a Daewoo instead of a Chevy! But, what if the Koreans find out it is really a Chevy????

Guess that's why the Cobalt SS owns in its class.
As for them not bringing the Cruze here right away, why would they. They spent the money on the Cobalt (SS best performer in class, XFE best fuel economy in class). So why bring out a replacement on a car that is only a few years old now? Oh, that's right, a bunch of haters cry wolf...
It is also very possible like Dave stated that they are simply testing it in other markets first. I am sure they are still working on the 1.6L Turbo for it as well. And if the Cobalt SS is an indication, the Cruze SS will also rock.

Really, Dean, then you probably think that Korea is somewhere in South Dakota?
Hillbillies, wake up!
Detroit cant develop anything besides trucks and Impalas. All the rest is done in Korea (GM-Deawoo), Europe (GM-Opel, Ford-Ford/Volvo), Japan (GM-Izuzu, Ford-Mazda) and Oz (GM-Holden).
Nothing on these pages with engine below 2.5L was ever touched by american 'professionals' except for the Maytag treatment for interiors and grilles.
Please wake-up to this when you vote for a government that is spending your money (US10b) for.... for what?
For companies, incl their suppliers, that make an output that any row of blind monkeys could do better anytime.

Ever heard of Sigma? Delta was also done in US, Delta II is GM Europe. Ecotec was developed internationally, team in Germany, team in the US, and a team in Sweden. This was done because it was intended from the start to be GM's global 4 cylinder engine, with displacements ranging from 1.6L to 2.4L, pretty sure 2.4L<2.5L.
Izuzu just re-badges GM trucks in the US. They only make medium to heavy duty trucks. Holden has done Alpha and Zeta. Daewoo makes the Aevo and is now responsible for Gamma II, which is, you guessed it, sub compacts.

That’s right, and Kim Jong-il is the Governor of North Dakota. I applaud your ability to detect obvious tongue-in-cheek comments and back them up with your own unique sense of satire. And just think, some people said you would never make it past the tenth grade.

Yes, Dean, hence my name.
On a serious note, i have been involved, rather deeply, in two industries (incl automotive), in so-called global projects. Sad to say, the american delegation was always holed-up in either a Holiday-inn or Hyatt. Came late for any meetings, had no contribution (others then 'it has to be cheaper' and 'we cant produce that with a hammer') and ran-off to McDonalds during lunch and dinner time. No interactions with the other teams...
Sorry, this is not a joke, and in one case may, i say may, actually describe your example above....

As a young person who will probably looking to buy a new, compact car in a few years, I just have to say that this can't come to America soon enough. I absolutely despise the Cobalt. I could buy a 1997 Dodge Intrepid and it would look more with the times. The Cobalt and G5 just can't compete. Even the Focus (although I wish we had the Euro version, I'd buy one if we did) is much better. That's not even looking at the real segment leaders: Jetta, Corolla, Civic, Scions, etc. I've said it before, I'll say it again: I'd love to buy American, but until the quality goes up, I'll have to go foreign. You're loosing sales at home GM. You hear the bell tolling? It tolls for thee...
