BMW to Launch a "Green" Supercar by 2012

BMW is working on a new "green" supercar that will be launched by the end of 2012. The new BMW supercar would rival the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes SLC.

The new supercar will showcase BMW's EfficientDynamics system, which combines fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start.

Sources claim that the two-seater will be a modern day M1, which may draw cues from the M1 Hommage Concept that was unveiled earlier this year.

It's rumored that the yet to be named supercar will be powered by BMW's twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight six and will get gas mileage that is equivalent to the 5 Series.

RX-7 Guy:

Unless this thing is a feather weight it will be no super car with their 3 liter engine.

Josh:

Considering the article says it has regenerative breaking, it looks as thoug they looking to piggyback that 3.0L with some sort of hybrid. Gah, I hate hybrids.

@Josh:

You can hate a hybrid for all the "I'm Green I'm cool" attitudes, but don't hate on electric motors in cars. You simply can't match the amount of instant torque an electric motor can give you.

I'm pretty sure the Prius has the same 0-15 time as Corvette. Obviously it falls flat on it's face after the gas engine comes on, but they're actually pretty damn peppy off the line.

Hangman:

Maybe some in wheel electric motors like on the Supra hybrid? Say 400-600kW from the 3L engine driving the rear, plus 2 * 120kW electrics on the front wheels. Throw in a fancy computer to distribute all that power, a light weight fame and you should have something decent. With roughly double the power going to the rear, it should still have oversteer bias and be fun to drive.

gm0n3y:

They should be able to coax 450+ HP from that engine easily. Combine that with a wallop of torque from the electric engine and it should be pretty damn fast.

SlowandMellow:

Is it just me, or does that car look like an evolved DeLorean?
