Mazda has officially taken the wraps off the all-new 2010 Mazda3 before its official unveiling at the LA Auto Show next month.
The all-new Mazda3 continues Mazda's current design theme that is also the basis for the new Mazda6 (Sustainable Zoom-Zoom).
Mazda hasn't released the final details except for the fact that the car will be powered by either a 2.3L or 2.5L four-cylinder engines when it is released sometime next year. Those engines seem kind of big for this class. Let's hope Mazda finally decides to bring the Mazda2 here to appeal to the fuel conscious folks.
Expect more details next month from the show.

All-New Mazda3 Sedan to Debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show
HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that the sedan version of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), fully redesigned for the first time in 5 years, will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show*1 on November 19, 2008.
The covers will be pulled off during Mazda's press conference from 12:20 to 12:45 (local time) revealing the all-new Mazda3, the latest evolution of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit.
All-new Mazda3 sedan (North American specification)
Every element of the all-new Mazda3 has been developed for heightened exhilaration, with a more refined sporty ride, top class fuel economy and quietness. Environmental and safety features, based on Mazda's long-term "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" vision, aim to achieve a balance with fun-to-drive. Add in a new expressive face and Mazda's dynamic design elements, and the all-new Mazda3 is everything a driver could ask for in a sports compact.

Since its launch in 2003, the current Mazda3 has sold approx. 1.8 million vehicles*2 in over 100 countries and has won more than 90 global motoring awards*3 to date. The Mazda3 accounts for almost one in three Mazdas sold every year.
Following the world debut of the North American specification sedan with 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines at the show, the five-door hatchback version will be revealed in line with Mazda's global sales schedule.

You are correct, it is a very nice looking car. It will compete with the Civic and others well.
My only concern is the engine size and probably fuel economy. I was really hoping that they were gonna start pushing the new cars from 2010/2011 etc.. to new fuel economy standards, like the Chevy Cruze and it's rumored 45MPG (US). Chances are with a 2.3 litre engine, you will not be seeing getting any better MPG out of this compared to the current Mazda 3.

If they played with the transmission, possibly by adding a very low 6th gear, that might help with fuel economy.
As for styling, it seems like the newest Mazda cars are taking styling cues from the RX-8, and they translate very well.

I still want to know what's up with the center line crease in the hood and overall shape. It looks good on the 6 because of the size of the car, but it is too emphasized on the current 3 (and appears so on the new model as well).
Well, the article also says 2.0 (not 2.3), and 2.5 (which might mean 2.3 version here?)... but either way probably not a gas sipper. But the general point of this car hasn't been to be a gas sipper. It is aimed at the small car crowd that wants something a little sporty, but still gets decent mileage. Where as my Corolla is gas sippin', boring as all get out, and blends in cause there are 1.8 trillion of them on the road. Right next to the 1.6 zillion Hondas....

@Brian
True, but is it so wrong to want a descent looking car that has both an engine easy on gas and one with a little more power? (such as the mazda speed or Civic SI)
I'm sure with some weight reduction and a well engineered engine, they could have it moving around with a 1.6litre or something, and then have another version with one similar to the mazda 3 speed.
Also, my mistake about NA getting the 2.0, I read only the top portion thorough where it said 2.3 and 2.5.
"Mazda hasn't released the final details except for the fact that the car will be powered by either a 2.3L or 2.5L four-cylinder engines when it is released sometime next year." I guess the 2.3 is meant for markets outside NA?

My guess is the 2.5L is like the 2.4L Ecotec vs the 2.2L Ecotec before the 2.2L got a boost in power and re-worked. The 2.2L made about 140 hp and got the same gas mileage as the 2.4L did with 171 hp. Increase the engine size a bit, make a bit more power, get the same gas mileage.
As others stated above, Mazda has always been more edgy and sporty over blandness and gas mileage.

A good redesign for sure. Looks like Mazda will surpass Acura in the looks department this year too. Almost has an elegant but sport look to it. Bravo to Mazda. Now just release the MazdaSpeed 3 in this format instead of the hatch and I'll be interested.

nice styling, although not best, but unique.
i like mazda's for its stlying, but not performance and fuel efficiency.
they have to make the engines bigger since mazda3's are really heavy. they realized that drivers will rev the old engines just to get decent acceleration.
right, it won't make a big difference in fuel economy.

Does every freekin new car have to have dual outlets to be recognized as a worthy vehicle to own? I mean damn, I want a car with a fat single tip like the good ol' Supra had, screw this dual tip nonsense. I can't stand it when some one tells me thier car has dual exhausts, no it DOES'NT!!!

Dirty,
It has nothing to do with function. Form doesn't come from function any more, that styling methodology is old school. Today its about creating something that isn't and surround it with HYPE. You can see this in everything today; Cars, Politics, the Internet, Sex and even the Stock Market. Well that was until "reality" stepped in and said, hey you aint what you say you are. CRASH......
It will be many years and it will get really bad before us dumb asses figure it out and reject it en masse. Be patient.

I am surprised to see there isn't more criticisms of the front end. Isn't it over done?
If it was fun to drive and I had the money I still consider buying one.
