VIDEO: 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 Hits 195 MPH on the Autobahn

2009_corvette_zr1_blue_video.jpg
Here's a video of the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 speeding down the Autobahn. In this video the uber-fast Corvette reaches 315 kph (195.73 mph). Apparently it could have gone even faster if it hadn't run out of road.

The Corvette ZR1 is powered by a supercharged 638 horsepower 6.2L V8 engine. The starting price for the ZR1 is set at $103,300.

Saheed:

This comment isn't related to this article, but so far, the Camaro SS, Cadillac CTS-V, Nissan GTR, Corvette ZR1, and the Viper ACR have completed a lap around the Nurburgring Nordschliefe. It just really pisses me off that Ford has not given the chance for the Ford GT, or even the Ford GT500KR. I would also like to know how the Challenger SRT would do. Anyway, could someone please tip me on how I could get Ford to do so (ex: a letter? and to whom?)?

:):

What I like the best is a man in a collard shirt just runs over to the Autobahn gives it a quick warm up then hits 195 pegging the speedometer like its nothing.

Seems to be an error somewhere. The man in the video says 647 HP and the article says 638.

@Saheed
Would be better to ask Roush Racing to lend you their Mustang with IRS. The standard mustang just wont hold up with the live axle. The Top Gear test showed something like 2 seconds difference and that was on their tiny little track. The problem with the GT is finding an owner that will turn it over to you for something like that. Everyone that is built is owned already. Most are sitting in garages.

ZzjitterzZ:

WOW - did you see the acceleration from 180 to 300 kph? Yeah I believe it could go much faster with more road - yowzers.

I just blew a load..

Challenger SRT8 is a pig of a car. Would be lucky to do the ring in under 9 minutes.

GRIZZ:

Looked to me like he could have buried the speedo and the car wasn't even trying. They should take it on the VW track they did the Veyron on and see what the straight line top speed is. I'm sure it won't compare to the Veyron but its 1/10th of the price, and in that stratospheric league who would care if your going 220 or 250 mph. The speedo pegs at 220. Who knows what it could do.

Horsepower is not as standard as one might guess. Horsepower in Europe is measured with a slightly different unit (PS).

638hp = 647ps

Consequently, when the exact same engine is sold in the EU, the certified "horsepower" number is slightly more.

The only American car I would ever buy would be a corvette. Specially the Z71 or Z06. These cars are engineered in Germany, built in Germany and given an American brand and honestly I can live with that. Also the reason why ford has not done any testing like this is simply because they have nothing this fast or anything that hugs the road like a corvette. The mustang is a dinosaur with plastic surgery. Its safe to say they have included alot of new looks but kept old school hardware and that just doesn't always work. That's why a mustang never reaches prices like 100+K. Don't get me wrong, I love mustangs. I love the way they look and sound but simply put, Its NOT a fast car and neither can it handle. It's an economy car no matter how big of an engine you slap in it. Give corvette the respect it deserves its worked for it. A true American heritage.

The only gay car I would ever buy would be a gayvette. Specially the POS1 or POS2. These cars are engineered by idiots, built by idiots and given an IDIOT brand and honestly I can rub one out with that. Also the reason why CRAP has not done any testing like this is simply because they have nothing this fast or anything that hugs the road like a gayvette. The crapstang is a dinosaur with plastic surgery. Its safe to say they have included alot of new looks but kept old school hardware and that just doesn't always work. Give gayvette the respect it deserves its worked for it. A true homosexual heritage.

@Splinter_stig

Correction: Ford has something in their arsenal and that would be their Ford GT. Come to think of it, they HAD it in their arsenal. Anyway, the Ford GT could be handled VERY easily on the track (as I read from it's reviews) and had 550hp.

@Stiger_Splint

ROTFLMAO:)

JB:

Ummm, I don't think the Corvette is engineered nor built in Germany.

unknown:

some of the comments people are leaving make me laugh so hard Im having a hard time staying on my chair. Z06 built in germany thats down right hilarious wonder why the corvette plant is in kentucky and if you buy a corvette you get the option to tour it and watch them build the z06s. As for the mustang it does have a live axle the sn197 chassis does not have a option made by anyone for irs a company called maximum motorsports made a prototype irs but it never made it into production. The roush car has better rear bushings top gear gets a lot of info incorrect and that just happens to be one of them. lots of mustangs have sold for well over 100k dollars in barrett jackson but usually that price is hard to get from the factory as ford doesnt sell to many collector cars for that price and even teh chevy at that price is a hard pill to swallow. As for the mustang not being able to handle well your right its not a great handling car from the factory but thats why there is a huge aftermarket for them. There is a company called agen47 that designed a new front suspension for the car that accually made several track records at some tracks here in the US. Cars like the vette porshe cant even keep up with it because it handles so well. Now tell me this how many 25k cars do you know of with 300 hp decent looks a all around decent ride.

SlowandMellow:

Perhaps the Euros can fine tune that beast, especially the suspension and clutch.

SlowandMellow:

Perhaps the Euros can fine tune that a beast, especially the suspension and clutch, a systemic failing in all domestic autos for some reason.

I occasionally drive 140mph on a less crowded stretch of Interstate, and my nerves are shot, these guys blow through 195mph in traffic, like its just a normal daily commute. I really hate traffic laws in the US and the speed nazi, revenue whores.

426Hemi:

I still say the Viper SRT10 ACR is better.

CS:

I've driven down that autobahn while I was stationed in Germany although I was driving my Pontiac Bonneville SSEi. I wish I could have driven it in a Corvette. Damn I miss Germany.

longdxcommuter:

I have to admit, this is a super-car bargain.

SteelCity1981:

Yeah the Ford GT is a beast of a car

Mike:

Couple of observations. First the driver is aside from being an engineer a factory test pilot for Corvette's which leads me to believe he's run the prototypes so it's not his first stint in the car. Secondly with regards to speed based on the way the thing reaches 315 KPH or whatever it hit the limitation to me looks to be in gearing, not in power. Throw a 7 or 8 speed tranny in that thing and give it more room and who knows what it'll hit...Impressive nonetheless.
