Cadillac is planning on launching a new small rear-wheel-drive sedan that will go head to head with the BMW 3-Series.
The 3-Series sized Alpha RWD Cadillac is scheduled for 2011 release date and will replace the slow selling FWD BLS (pictured above) in Europe and be sold in North America as well. The small RWD Alphas will consist of a conventional four-door sedan as well as a folding hardtop coupe, or a conventional coupe and convertible.

cadillac going head to head with the bmw 3-series? here's a better idea - take that money and burn it. at least then we won't have to look at your ugly cars.

you people need to learn how to read, the car in that picture is the European cadillac BLS, its front wheel drive and its hideous. Cadillac is going to be replacing that car with a new small rear wheel drive vehicle, so theres still a chance it wont be a ugly piece of crap.

Hopefully they won't make the same mistake as they did with the Catera. I really feel sorry for those people that got suckerd into that car.

I suppose it will be a 4cyl then, maybe with the option of a 6cyl in a year or so?

'Cadillac is planning on launching a new small rear-wheel-drive sedan that will go head to head with the BMW 3-Series'
Because it is rear wheel drive....hahahahaha.
Who is the customer? a 45 year old geriatric?
Skoda is taking on Rolls Roys, because the new Superb also stores an umbrella in its door.
Sell your stock! America is over.

They need to tread carefully. If it comes off as a budget model Cadillac, it will flop. HUGE.
On the other hand, if they do it right they could raise a lot of peoples opinions about the validity of their other cars.
So there's risk in this. But, if they are committed to doing it right, it could pay off.

I admit it has been a while since I drove a Cadilac, but I wonder if GM will really succeed in competing with BMW on driving experience. There is a reason that the 3-series is the gold-standard on how a sports sedan should drive.
Perhaps a more reachable target (as it's more focused on luxury, which Cadilac has more experience with than drive-performance) would be the C-Class.

Being a 50 year old geriatric myself, I guess maybe I could share my views as to who might buy this new Caddy. BMW makes a fine car and everything else being equal, I would love to own one. I appreciate the engineering, the performance and sometimes the styling. On the other hand, there are a lot of yahoos out there that buy BMWs because they are cool, or fast or just because they are expensive and do not buy them to have a great performance car, they buy them to impress everyone around them. For precisely this reason, I would not buy one cause I don't want to be labled as a typical BMW a**h*le. On the other hand, I would take great joy in buying something that is as good or better and cost less. Can I at least get some grudging agreement that the current CTS is a decent vehicle? I mean, even that old Pro BMW rag Road and Track had good things to say about the CTS-V when comparing it to a BMW M5 in this month's issue. Now I know the CTS will never be as perfect as a 5 Series, but they can make it damn close and for a lot less money. Plus, how cool would it be to embarrass a stuck up M5 owner on a country road or highway when a lowly Caddy gives them a good run for their money? Anyway, just because the American car makers have made crap before, does'nt mean they always will. Everyone laughed at the early Hyundais and now look at them. It's a decent car I might consider for myself some day. I never would have said that in the late 80s. But then, I am a 50 year old geriatric. What do I know.....

Last I checked, the CTS was supposed to compete with the 3-Series.
I don't know why they chose CTS-V vs BMW M5 at the track when the the M3 sedan is clearly it's true opponent.
(although I do give the CTS-V credit for matching the M5 in performance, level of luxury, and creature comforts).

Yes Saheed, but as the article stated the BMW M5 is a THREE YEAR old design, while the CTS-V is not even in show rooms yet.

Hey, Loxest iq,
why dont you go "S" a "D"! You need to just admit to yourself the american auto makers are catching the foreigners, and if you knew what you talking about you would would know that Ford in particular is gaining ground, both in design and reliability not to mention quality, so stop hatin and get over yourself!

Let us not forget that the CTS was originally designed as a replacement for the Catera, so we know Caddy can make good "entry-level" luxury cars. Of course, the CTS has grown in size, price, and performance, and it's really a logical step for Caddy to fill the entry-level position once held by the CTS.
I hope the BLS name doesn't stick. I miss the days when American cars had actual names, and not just numbers and letters.

Heey Phil,
you must be the dumbest poster on this blog.
American auto makers are catching the foreigners, hahaha, who are you talking about? You mean Tata buying Jaguar?
Toyota looking at the Viper?
Ford gaining ground? You mean they have 'fallen to the ground'? Yeah, thought so too.
Design? Ford? You must be talking about Ford Europe, oh no, American Auto makers, yeah.
Anything else? Thought so too.

most japanese car manufacturers have a terrible cheapness to their cars. just look at the Lexus and Acuras .. they have one piece fisher price plastic dash boards and cheap ass uncomfortable seats. The only exception to that rule is Infiniti for some reason they have comfortable seats but still have odd looking plastic box shaped dashboards .im looking at u g35. Since about 2001 most japs have been making cheap shit as usual and companies like honda have cars priced far above what their worth is on the market compared to American and European cars. Here is one example. A 2006 330 BMW gets 0-60 in 6.7 with a 3 liter engine. A 4 door 3 liter Accord gets 0-60 in 8 seconds. Also they both get 21/29 mpg in the city. Although I will admit the BMW was more expensive new but cost less used with the same miles on it . Honda was just reciently overtaken by hyundai in the overall car sales this year because of their price point.
