GM recently introduced the all-new Chevy Traverse crossover that is based on the same architecture as the Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia. GM is hoping that the Traverse will have what it takes to grab the number one sales spot in the large crossover segment.
Currently Toyota and Honda own the segment with the Highlander and Pilot. Last year Toyota sold 127,878 Highlanders and Honda sold 117,146 Pilots. Chevy boss, Ed Peper claims that the Traverse can beat both of them.
One way that GM hopes to win over buyers is by offering a cash rebate to non-GM owners. "We need to conquest," Peper said. "We need fresh people." Currently GM is offering a $2,000 cash rebate to customers coming off leases with GMAC.
The 2009 Traverse starts at $28,990 and in addition to the Highlander and Pilot also competes with the new Ford Flex, not to mention the other lambda based GM crossovers.

Another still birth. The Volt is the only GM vehicle that interests me.

Chevy might actually have a chance to beat the latest version of the Pilot...whoever designed the latest Pilot must have bumped their head before they put pen to paper.

My reaction is meh. It looks like GM made a plain-looking station wagon.
If GM consolidated all of those versions under one name plate, they might have a shot at taking that market. GM really needs to shrink the number of lines. Cadillac for the top end and Chevrolet for the rest. Pontiac could be reworked for the sporty/youth market, but it needs some new designs. Everything else (Buick/Saturn/GMC) has got to go.
Given the current gas prices, isn't this segment shrinking? Perhaps they are trying to capture the people that are trying to sell their Suburbans.

Honda designed the new pilot, along with the element, the TL, the RL and the front end of the TSX, therefore it was bound to be awful.
No, crossovers aren't shrinking in total, just ugly ones like the Pilot. You're brilliant for suggesting people are trading in truck based SUVs for crossovers, it's just why the segment was invented and further exploited.
Oh, and you should apply for the Nobel prize for your one paragraph thesis on the failures of the GM business plan. I can't believe your insight; it's like you've peered into the soul of a faceless corporate giant and seen nothing. At least nothing new.

While I'm not a fan of this class of vehicle, this is a pretty nice looking one for that class. So kudos, GM!
