The all-new 2009 Mazda6 will be in showrooms this month, but according to Mazda officials, there are no plans for a hybrid variant.
"Sure, the landscape has changed during the past six months, but a hybrid is just not something we're planning on doing at the moment," said Jay Amestoy, vice president of public and government affairs for Mazda North American Operations. "Our real-world MPG numbers will be strong, and we just think the fuel economy is pretty good the way it is."
The 2009 Mazda6 with the 2.5L 4-cylinder and manual transmission has a 20/29 mpg rating while the 3.7L V6 gets 17/25 mpg. Mazda's only current hybrid is the Tribute, which shares its powertrain with the Ford Escape Hybrid. It was expected that the Mazda6 would eventually get the hybrid powertrain from the upcoming Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Any car maker releasing a car with under 30mpg highway should not consider its economy strong.

Just hope they bring the European commercials here. They are hilarious.

This thing gets worse gas mileage and worse performance than the Chevy Camaro in 6 cylinder comparisons. At least the interior looks less cheesy.
In the cheap luxury sedan market I'd definitely be after the Genesis 6 cyl than a loaded Mazda 6. It's 18/27, RWD, larger and more powerful.
But for a junky 19k ultracheap 4 door sedan this would probably be the ticket.

That's right - let’s pull in a bunch of different cars from other classes and compare them to this one. The ignorance of the people on this board is unbelievable!
@Porsche Lover - I'm talking to you
@mf - You are an idiot
@Tim - I agree

Fuel economy IS pretty poor, not even hitting 30mpg with the 4-cylinder. A Honda Accord would be a better buy for someone looking for a sporty sedan, while a Hyundai Sonata will be a better value with it's cheaper price, better interior, and better fuel economy.

@jake
The malibu gets over 30mpg on the highway, as does the accord, camry, and sonata. Toyota and chevy hybrids in this segment do even better. Somehow being towards the bottom of Fuel Economy in its class is strong?
The truck and suv segment has gone into the toilet.
The prius is selling in record numbers, in a small/midsized car segment that hasn't been that hot until recently, and somehow i'm supposed to believe that nobody cross shops market segments. So all the truck buyers died off due to heart attacks from high gas prices and small car buyers magically appeared from fairy dust sprinkled at car lots across america.
It may be an apple and an orange, but it is all food.
Why don't you try coming with something better next time, or is deedeedee all you can manage.

Damn
They should have just sold you guys a stripped out Euro/Jap spec one instead of this re-engineered Ford um I mean Mazda USA piece of Junk!!!
The 2.5L Euro/Jap ones are good on fuel better than camry or accord in Australia anway. Not really much point posting numbers since we use L/100km but I'll do it anyway.
Mazda 6 6sp Manual 8.4L/100km 5sp Auto 8.7L/100km
Toyota Camry 5sp Manual 8.9L/100km 5sp Auto 9.9L/100km
Honda Accord 5sp Auto 8.8L/100km
Plus the Mazda just drives better, but ours is way different to yours so I guess that means nothing to you americans.

Why should we actually improve our mileage? Stupid Americans assume we have better mileage than American-Branded cars anyway.

Yes, Americans are stupid indeed. Some of them actually buy our 'cars'. LMAO!

@ mf
Because of a 3-6% difference in fuel economy you make a blanket statement about how it underperforms? Seriously!
And now all the truck buyers are buying Prius'?
Go be smug and drive your hybrid and don't post about cars anymore. K? Thanks.

@jake
The accord, lx&ex a larger car with a more powerful engine gets better fuel economy, I would say that is by definition under performing.
I didn't say they are all buying them all I said it people to just shop and 1 segment, and provided supporting evidence to my argument. I know its a complicated thing to post more than just fan boy personal attacks.
I don't drive a prius, but it appears I have more knowledge and room to post than you do, as atleast I come with facts, and arguments, not just personal attacks.
