Hyundai Recalls 65,000 Elantras

2008hyundaielantrasilver.jpg
Hyundai is recalling about 65,000 2008 Elantras to fix a problem with the fuel pump.

The recall involves Elantras equipped with the 2.0L Beta engine to replace the fuel pump. Gasoline with ethanol added produces a buildup of film on the units' electrical contacts, which will cause the car to hesitate during starting or while driving.

At this point the recall is only voluntary and no injuries have been reported.

The Elantra is Hyundai's second best selling vehicle in the US after the Sonata.

Hmm... guess my dad's 07 Elantra is safe.

Joe:

I guess that's what u get for having a BETA engine....

j/k

Noya:

I guess that's what you get when the government thinks it's a great idea to force 10% ethanol in all the fuel, knowing it affects the fuel system of most cars.

Icester:

Can someone please explain to me the benefits of an ethanol vehicle? Ethanol fuel costs about 85-90% of regular fuel and only delivers about 80% of the mpg.

Until some of the future ethanol production methods come online, I fail to see the advantage.

bliq:

ethanol supposedly is one way to wean the US off foreign oil- that's the benefit. Technically, it also produces slightly more horsepower than gasoline but you probably wouldn't notice the difference. Not sure if there's an environmental benefit other than it's renewable. The main bad thing is the lower mileage but also, that it burns invisibly so people could get burned without ever seeing a flame. That's part of the reason of E85, and not pure ethanol fuel in cars.

SEALBoy:

By FAR the biggest problem with ethanol fuel in America is that it is made from CORN. That royally screws the food economy. Brazil has been making ethanol from sugarcanes for years now, and they have a system that works. Ours doesn't.
