Ford's New EcoBoost Engines Will Add About $700

2009_lincoln_mks_ecoboost.jpg
Next year Ford is going to debut its first line of EcoBoost engines and Ford is expecting them to add about $700 to each car.

Ford's first EcoBoost engine is going to be a 3.5L V6 with over 340 horsepower and 340 lb.ft. of torque. According to Ford the EcoBoost V6, which features twin turbochargers and direct injection gets 20 percent better fuel-economy than a normal V8 engine, while delivering the same performance as a V8.

The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 will debut in the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS sedan next year, there upcoming Lincoln MKT crossover will also get the engine. Eventually this engine will find its way under the hood of the F150. Ford is also working on 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines that will feature a single turbocharger.

According to Ford the EcoBoost engines will save consumers about $340 a year on gas (based on 15K miles a year and gas at $3.25 a gallon). It will take you two years to break even from the premium paid for the EcoBoost engine.

Jim:

The engine sounds awesome, but lets be honest here...are we ever going to see $3.25/gallon gas in the U.S. again? Even if oil slides back well below $100/barrel, gas prices will up fast and come down slow regardless. Lets just be hopeful that Ford doesn't mate this engine to some crappy transmission.

ZzjitterzZ:

$3.31/gal here in Iowa currently.

But your logic is backwards - the higher the gas price, the greater the savings potential.

lowest iq:

Eco-boost?

The internal name is 'EPR-boost'.

Thats how Ford screws you around over the topic of high gas prices....

the gas man:

$3.25 is feasible, and I believe it will happen (again) in some places very soon.

waaah the japanese man screwed me and now ford wants to screw my mum and dad. waaaah.

rmesux:

Fomoco... as in sinking ship is charging a $700.00 premium....am i missing something?
Good luck with that.

Ford Market cap US$ 13.72 Billion (2008)
GM Market cap US$ 5.63 Billion (2008)

As an investor in both Ford & GM, I have to say that Ford is ahead of the curve while GM is still kicking the can down the road with products like the Cobalt & Saturn still in the pipeline. The some what all-new Ford Focus is kicking A$$ and the upcoming line-up replete with Eco-Boost is just what the stock holder and market has ordered!! Cheers

Vtfo0lio:

Oh man, when they put these new engines in the 2013 Ford Mustangs, those tuners are gonna have a ball! If the transmission can hold, imagine having a 500whp sub $30,000 car with just bolt-ons and a tune. Ridiculous....

What was all that about? It didn't make any sense. How is Ford screwing you because they call the engine Eco Boost or EPR Boost.
They're making significantly more efficient engines. I fail to see how that hurts you. Unless you own honda gm and toyota stock.

@teldar:

1. EPR= Econimic Profit realised.
US700/500Nett income on a cost of US100 is a
good profit bringer.
2. US700 delta: exactly the expected savings in two years... Guess who calculated that delta.....It wasnt based on the cost...

teldar:

So you think the cost of adding two stage turbo is only going to cost $100?
In both production AND engineering, research and design?
I would think it would be a little higher than that.
