Ford has set the goal of launching its newest small cars with the highest quality ever in its attempt to challenge Toyota.
Bennie Fowler, Ford's group vice president in charge of global quality, has stated that Ford is going to launch its new line of small cars from Europe with an average of 800 things gone wrong per 1,000 vehicles, which is better than Toyota and more than 500 fewer problems per 1,000 vehicles than the predicted industry average.
Fowler stated, "The vehicles we deliver in 2010 will be the highest quality ever."
Part of Ford's plan to achieve this goal is to send 5-10 hourly workers from its U.S. plants to Wayne State University this fall. The workers will receive full training to become certified Six Sigma black belts, the industry standard for quality expertise.

Well, lets hope this isn't just a publicity exercise and they are actually serious about improving quality.

That's a pretty attractive car for being a ford - granted I would never go near domestics. I'm excited to see though what 2010 has in store for Ford.

It's a Ford Europe car, which means much better quality, Ford really has been bringing it's A game for a while now, they have made tremendous strides in quality and bringing the European models here will blow a lot of peoples minds, in Europe Ford wins awards for quality and awesome car's the Mondeo is just about universaly loved there. It's about time that the US got some of Ford's good products.

Well, this is a good move from Ford. We'll see what the f#ck UAW does on these vehicles once they come out of factories in N America. There was no exception until now: every european designed/produced car by the domestic trio got screwed badly once "transformed" for the american need. This is due to UAW power. More recent example: Astra/Aura is a great car in Europe. Here is a POS overpriced junk.
In 2001 ford Focus topped the chart for the most reliable car in europe, interrupting I don't know how many years of VW dominance with the Golf. Beside that, it beat the Golf on handling.
The Focus sold in N America is a ... I don't even have a word for it ... 4 wheeled POS?
Ford Fiesta is a great small car, if they would bring it here as it is in europe, Honda Fit and Toyo Yaris would be in big big trouble. But Please, bring exactly the same car. Don't let the over-payed under-educated morons from UAW "adapt" it to the "american need"

@papabear:
Unfortunately for Ford, if the car is built in the US and not imported, it's going to UAWized... No way around it unless you build it in Europe and ship it over. Lets just hope they keep the same interior materials, electronics suppliers, etc... It's still going to have to be built by the UAW so it may lose a bit of it's quality.
Either way US Ford has been making leaps and bounds in quality and is ranked right behind Toyota and perhaps ahead of Honda.
Now if they could just release an Ecoboost version of this thing with AWD or an LSD they'd have a real pocket rocket on their hands.

I hope you guys understand that there is a fairly big engineering role involved in adapting production of a car to be driven in the USA. Fit and finish is one thing, but beyond that you might want to look a little deeper than just blaming the UAW for everything. It's not like the guy on the assembly line is deciding what engine to put in, or what type of suspension to use.

800 problems per 1,000 vehicles is good?

yes 800 problems per 1k vehicles is very good. Right now in jd I believe lexus was top ranked with 110 or something like that problems per 100 vehicles. while the uaw may be overpaid for what they do you do have to understand about the focus and aura. The focus was built in fords mexico city plant so it wasnt a part of uaw and it still won tons of awards for how good of a car it was plus you see tons of them running around so it did sell very well. As for the saturn aura who ever said teh vaxhaul astra was a good car. From all the reviews Ive ever heard on that car it was a pile of garbage and in the states its called a chevy malibu which wasnt that bad of a car. I really do like the styling of these new cars and I believe the fiesta will sell extremely well as it will be priced under the yaris with a engine that will get similar if not better fuel economy to the honda fit(overpriced). FORD please dont ruin this car by puting a transmission in it that needs a 10l engine to move it like you did with the last focus.

From listening to Top Gear (UK), I can only conclude that European Ford is not equal to U.S. Ford. Not equal is not strong enough.... try "polar opposites".
Euro Ford seems to be a _quality_ car that is smartly engineered to offer good room, fuel mileage, and performance. U.S. Ford is a POS with none of these.
If Ford brings its Euro Fords to the U.S. with the same build quality I think they could really turn their small car business around here in the U.S.

"The focus was built in fords mexico city plant"
I am not aware of the Focus ever being built at the Mexico City Plant, at least not for U.S. consumption. The Escort was moved from Wayne Assembly to Mexico City for a while. The Focus is built at the Wayne Assembly Plant in Wayne Michigan. The Michigan Truck Plant, which sits next to Wayne Assembly is now gearing up to produce the Focus as well because Wayne Assembly cannot build enough of them.

Since i work in a facility that solves odd issues that some dealerships cannot, i can honestly say that you can blame the UAW for PLENTY of quality issues in new domestic vehicles.
Glass with bubbles in the plastic laminate center layer that get installed anyway. Windshields with voids in the urethane that attach them to the body opening, allowing leakage. Body seam sealer that isn't sealing seams due to improper application. Or even better, some sort of tape similar to duct tape that is applied to seams before the seam sealer. Doesn't make sense since the tape releases from the body LONG before seam sealer will. Grounding points along the wiring harnesses that aren't attached to the body, or secured to a painted surface.
Some of this stuff that arrives at the dealership has flaws that are painfully obvious. Final inspectors at the plants need to wake up. A lot of this is point blank, in your face crap. How can you miss it ?
Much of the process is automated, so all that is needed from many of the UAW flesh and blood crew when they are hands on. is to inspect the product for proper fit and finish, and make sure someone gets told when an automated process isn't as accurate as it should be. I see signature manufacturing flaws all the time. I wonder how many people under the umbrella of the UAW are actually United, know Autos, or actually Working.
And as i've stated before, the UAW must be scraping the bottom of the pork barrel in Detroit. They are branching out to casino workers, and god knows what else. Why would a card dealer need a union? Seems like a hazard-free environment to me.
Almost all of the VIN's for the Focus start in 1FAFP if i remember correctly. Go Google the Ford VIN anatomy and figure out where it's made.

Ford is turning itself around in a big way, by looking at its past. When the Taurus debuted in 85 to the U.S. it was one of the best cars on the planet at that time in overall quality and design and that was mostly do to the success of Ford gathering up their best design team from around the world and putting together a solid car and that's what Ford is doing again, but this time they are doing it to their whole entire lineup of cars. The global platform is the upmost way to go and they should have been designing cars around a global platform 23 years ago when they introduced the Taurus instead of now.

My father works in an auto related industry (production equipment supplier), and often deals with the big 3. His experience is with GM mostly, but the stories he tells can hardly be believed when it comes to union incompetence and worker inefficiency.
He says the days of the unions at the big 3 are numbered. Workers for some of the big suppliers have taken contracts with huge pay/benefit cuts. The unions are seriously losing their power.
Look for the big 3 to start declaring bankruptcy to break the unions and maybe GM, Ford, and Chrysler can start competing again.

The days of the UAW telling the manufacturers how it is going to be NEED to be numbered for our economy to survive. It amazed me that there aren't many people who don't see what the unions have done to this country.
Was there a need for them when people were working for barely subsistence wages in dirty, unhealthy and dangerous environments?
YES
Is there a need for someone with a high school diploma (maybe) to get a compensation package in the $60/hr range? I don't get that, and I'm a nurse with 8 years experience and 3 degrees.

Ford Quality? Sometimes...read my post on "Ranger on life support". Its the last one....I don't read this juvinile site often because of all of the ignorance displayed. BUT the UAW is a socialist organization, that before the imports got a non union toe hold in the US was activily trying, through sabotage, to kill off all but GM. This would then insure goverenment intervention and control of prices and wages.

About frikin time... I know 800 flaws per 1000 cars sounds low, but actually I think it's strange that a company would produce cars with even 300 things gone wrong.
Perfection is something to never be achieved, but always be sought!
