It seems pretty common now that images always somehow manage to leak out before a new model is officially unveiled...well its happened again with the next-generation 2009 VW Golf.
Overall the new Golf draws some inspiration from the VW Scirocco...a car we unfortunately can't get here in the US. The official details remain scarce, but expect a series of diesel and gas engines to be offered that will be mated to manual, automatic and DSG transmissions.
The all-new Golf will officially be unveiled this week and should reach our shores late next year.

The golf looks better and better every time I see it. A very quick and usable round-the-town car.
Although the interior looks wretched after the previous post of the Chevy Cruze. It definitely looks cheeky plastic.

@Sandman
So you go ahead and do a counter-strike against Brian's comment on the GM?
Have you checked out the new Malibu? I have, and while it's a HUGE step-up for GM, it's interior materials are nowhere near the quality of VW/Audi's materials. GM's still have that cheap feel when you touch them.

VW and quality? Are you joking with me? I don't know how you qualify that statement and then go to Edmonds or JD Power and go down all the lists and awards and even remotely make such an absurd comment such as that. I think they did manage to pull a bronze award in Europe somewhere...
Besides, is there a car that doesn't feel cheap these days? I mean everything is plastic or fake or fake, did I mention fake... Oh well.

@sandman,
Dear Sir, I challenge you to go and see the interiors of VWs and compare of that of other brands. For something made of fake materials, VWs have pretty decent interior. It's the reliability and customer service of dealers that suck major balls. I know because I own one.

undead is right.
No where in my post did I mention VW reliability, resale, etc.
JUST that their interiors are at the top of the list in their respective price range.

pitty of the tail lights. Could do w/o the piece on the trunklid.
This will be an excellent car. Will probably, globally, outsell Corolla!
No, no NOT 'here in South Dakota' we have...

@Bill
The main reason I've heard for VW bucking their normal trend of 7 year product cycles (The Golf V has only been around for 3 years, 4 by the time this is released) is that the Golf V is/was a very low profit vehicle without the upgrade packages that most of the rest of the world (USAian here) don't get saddled with. The primary focus was to make a car that's competitive with the Golf V, but costs less to build.
I don't find it surprising at all that VW aren't bringing it over here, but I don't mind, because they built about the only VWs I'll consider anymore in the 80s and 90s.

Well, icon cars such as the MINI Cooper, Porsche, etc. shouldn't deviate too much physically, but beater vehicles such as a Golf should get at least a facelift. If I was your average Joe, I'd have a hard time believing this was an "all-new" Golf.

You know, maybe VW should partner with Subaru.
Everyone loves Subie technology: AWD, turbo, great handling.
And everyone (well most everyone) finds VW's go be visually appealing, but mechanically/electrically unsound.
Put the two together and you get a Scirocco that goes fast and looks good.

I have sat in and driven serveral VWs. I don't find the interior any better than a honda or toyota, I also find the ergonomics typically lacking, with too many small buttons with small almost invisible writing on them. The malibu may not look quite as good, but it is a lot easier to work all the controls when you first get in, without pulling out the manual and a magnifying glass.
@Brian
If people want a awd vw they can buy an audi, or the german made vw that come with awd.
Besides I would take a vw diesel over a subie turbo boxer any day.

VW is an enigma to me. They make beautiful vehicles with great driving characteristics, impressive fit and finish, and timeless style. However, anytime I entertain the notion of buying one, I am bombarded by horror stories of shoddy dealer practices and reliability concerns (either perceived or real) that dissuade me. A shame really.

@longdx
simpatise with you.
VW is NOT for morons. If you know how to drive and have a 'reasonable' feel for the machine, then a VW can last 20years/500kkms.
Unfortunately, that rules out 80% of the USA. People that 'aim' their car rather then steer it or think that going to the liquor store is getting an oil change.
If you dont know how to use a computer, if you think apple is a fruit, if you buy clothes and return then for cash refund after use, if you think Pizza Hut is 'fine dining', have shoes with moulded-on rubber soles, a digital watch, or worse, an analogue watch that imitates a swiss original, live in a house with walls made of cardboard, yes, then get a Chevy
