Toyota Announces Prices For 2009 Yaris Subcompact
August 1, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the three fuel efficient 2009 Toyota Yaris subcompact models. MSRPs will range from $12,205 for the three-door Liftback Base model to $15,880 for the Sedan S model when the vehicles hit dealerships later this summer.
Estimated EPA fuel economy ratings are 29 mpg city/35 mpg highway/31 mpg combined for all three body styles with an automatic transmission and 29/36/32 mpg for the manual transmission models.
The excellent fuel economy, combined with extensive standard equipment and fun-to-drive features make Yaris an outstanding value. For 2009, Yaris is available in three body styles: a sedan, three-door Liftback, and an all-new five-door liftback, each in Base and Sporty "S" grades.
All Yaris grades will now feature a number of standard safety features, including anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. this is an excellent car and so is the honda fit.
the toyo is slightly more durable, the honda slight more 'smart'.
Compared to this GM and Ford make Lada's.

nice car.
my only gripe is the gauges are centered in the dash, making you take your eyes further off the road to look at them. put them behind the steering wheel where they belong!

@ Cobalt SS man
My mom's lexus averages 27mpg. Why should she sell it and get this for 4 more mpg?
The Yaris is a disposable car. It evokes no emotion. It's the epitome of boring transportation. The Corolla is 1-2k more and a far better vehicle. Toyota should drop the Yaris.

I have the 08 version of this car. Its compairable to the honda fit but it gets better fuel economy because its around 300 lbs lighter. Its a cheap car and nothing more should be expected of it. The center gauges are a plus because it makes it much easier to cycle when you look in the rear view mirror like a good driver should be doing every now and then. Had this car for my daily commuting and the lack of power is annoying compaired to other cars Ive had and currently have but not unsafe. You really can beat this thing up without to much complaints. Paint is a little cheap and some of the dealers are pretty bad but this is the type of cars toyota is good at. Its really funny driving this thing around because people often stop to check my car out and are quite surprised how roomy it is inside.

@Noya:
Why do you bother posting? Nobody even reads what you write anymore since it's all just your mis-informed opinion.
Anyways, I kind of agree with Dan, I think the center guages detract from interior look of the vehicle. It still reminds me of the Echo with that center dash. However, like unknown said, it does make it easier to veiw the guages and the rear veiw mirror. Besides that single gripe, I think the Yaris is a pretty good buy. It's a shame the car is priced to $15k with the same engine as the base model, though.

God I love this pile of poo. I can't wait to get one and put a 8" tail pipe on the end of it and drive around making all those farty noises. I'll pretend the rounded egg shape is just pent up gas and fart my way off the line for a record setting flatulence to 60 in 15.5 seconds.

Now with ABS, ughh.
Good old governmental regulations kicking in. ABS was only an OPTION on my 04 Corolla. Which looking back on it, I might should have gotten....

This is a decent car for city-intensive driving, but for mixed driving (which I do a lot), I'm gonna need something ATLEAST the size of a Focus, both to load my stuff in and have some breathing space/legroom. I usually drive with passengers as well. I'll gladly sacrifice 3 highway mpg and get myself a roomy Sonata.

This reminds me of a '04 Saturn ION coupe that i owned. Due to the low cost of ownership, I would expect (and received) the same dash layout and cheap interior of a $13k car. Although Consumer Reports completely bashed the Saturn dash layout, I'm sure they will love this dash now that Toyota 'invented' it. Again, toyota continues to copy and not inovate; same round gauges as fords, same dash layout as Saturn, same cheap backlit LCD display as my 80's calculator for the stereo, horrible rear seats, etc. etc.
Why can't they at least put a little design effort and mold the plastic on the dash panels? That can't possibly cost more than a few cents and greatly influence the interior quality since you are staring at a boring blank panel for hours behind the wheel.
I'm sure it will run for a while and be reliable, but the Saturn ION also was extremely reliable too with almost the same MPG. At least it had a little more flare for the money.
But then, $13k is about the depreciation of a more expensive car in 2-3 years. So you could buy a new Yaris every year instead of watching your car rot in the driveway. I wonder if you can find this buggy at $13K though?

I love these things, but they should get better mpg,my 2006 civic automatic gets 38.8 on highway, real world mileage, even better than the fit.

If you want a cheap commuter, get the Yaris. But the Fit handles better (autocross). The high center placement of the gauges actually does help you keep your eyes on the road better, but I still hate it.

I actually surprised that it has taken so long for Toyota to bring the Yaris 5 door to the States. This model has been in existence in other parts of the world for years. IMO, this is a great commuter car. Decent room in the rear seats, clean dash layout, and very efficient engine. The Fit is more fun, but the Yaris is perfect for work commuting.
