According to Inside Line, Toyota has canceled the replacement for the next-generation Lexus SC Coupe/ Convertible and may also be canceling the next Avalon as well.
In the first six months of this year, Lexus only sold 1,230 SC 430s, which is down 40 percent from a year ago. Toyota apparently was working on a new SC that would be based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the upcoming LF-A. The new SC was originally planned for an early 2009 introduction, but was then pushed back to 2011. Now the coupe has been completely killed.
Toyota is currently working on the next-generation Camry, which is due for 2012. Toyota is looking at the possibility of killing the Avalon and releasing a long-wheelbase version of the next Camry in its place.

Toyota is thinking smart, planning well, and learning from their missteps. Maybe they should be hired as consultants for G.M.

Other than having a little more passenger space and some upgraded gadgets, just what is it that separates the Avalon from the Camry anyways?

The Avalon is a coupe, the Camry is a saloon.
Really, I know Toyota is trying to make cars that sell, but sometimes you have to make cars people want.
Of course they are letting Subaru take the heat if the new coupe they are working on fails, so hey it's a start.
I picture it one day: Toyota will make only bland 4/5 door vehicles that work well and look like the most computer aerodynamic design possible. Oh wait, we are almost there.

To Brian: The new Avalon is a FOUR DOOR saloon, not a coupe. They may have made it solely as a coupe a while ago, but it's now only made as a four door saloon.
I looked at the Avalon when I was searching for a car just over a year ago. My impressions was this: It's barely larger than the Camry in cabin space. I thought there were a lot of luxuries available for the car that could cut into Lexus's market (like laser guided cruise control, heated outside mirrors, rain sensing windshield wipers, Lexus-like power seat option, smart key, Fancy JBL stereo w/ lots of speakers, rear sunshade, etc...) Granted most of these options are on the Limited version and it still said "Toyota" and not "Lexus", you could still get the Limited for less than a Lexus ES or something comparable.
I will be upset if they can the model. I would be looking at the Avalon again when it comes time to sell/trade in my Camry.

The SC430 was doing bad cuz its just an ugly car in general. Its been around for too long with not even the slightest updates. Toyota is becoming a company of pure blandess. They gotta realized they need a Halo car to attract people the buy the crappier models...

For reducing the number of ugly melted-marshmallow cars I'll have to see in the future. I hate the current version SC. The Avalon's dash looks like it was designed by 4 different people; none of the individual elements flow into one another. There's a gauge over here, a clock over there, a box over here with a vent over there. Awful.

So right now Toyota doesn't produce a single RWD 2 door car. What a boring company. Toyota doesn't produce a single product I would buy. They'd better bring that v10 monster online soon, and bring a little affordable brother too.
The 92-2000 SC was an awesome car. They ought to make something similar to it again.

@Tim
it is the same system developed into the new S-Class Benz, when you have the system activated and your driving down the highway and a slower vehicle is ahead of you the radar sensors tell the car to slow down or stop to match the speed of the vechicle ahead of you. great system although only usefull if activated.

The Avalon is a pretty ugly car and with the Camry, its also useless. Anybody who wants the Avalon would probably just buck up for a Lexus.
As for the SC 430, I hope they don't kill it altogether, it just needs a major redesign. At the moment, its the only somewhat interesting car that Toyota makes (until the LFA comes out anyways).

The avalon is actually a great car because of its in-offensive styling (don't even think of calling it bland!!!) its spaciousness, its somewhat powerful, yet fuel efficient V6, and its luxery amenties at quite an affordable price.
A Lexus flagship model at Toyota price. Why simply make an extended Camry when the Avalon was just fine?
And worse, why get rid of a decent RWD luxury roadster coupe? Even if it's not selling very well, Toyota has plenty of money to back up its loss in profit!!!

Yeah, sorry about the 4 door/coupe thing. I had a brain fart and was thinking about the Solara.

Hello all! I purchased an 08 Avalon in Limited trim in 11/07. My first car in the $36-$40,000 price range. I considered the 08 lexus ES but then compared to the lower price for for the Avi and getting more standard toys than the Lexus, the choice was clear! Everyone I know says its a Lexus at a Toyota price;even the folks at the dealer!!, where I purchased the car( THANKS Stadium Toyota in Tampa Florida!.) The 2GR-FE engine is awesome; it isn't a screamer, but I am doing 6.5-7.0 seconds to 60 on regular fuel!!! And the gas mileage is great!! Its probably because of the six soeed tranny. And the amenities are top notch for this price segment, ( I think, anyway. I used to own GM products; and have been a loyal Toyota owner since 1999, including a 99 and '03 Solara,a 2000 Tundra &"03 Tundra, and currently with the Avi, I have a 06 Rav also with the 2GR-FE V6, which is also a rocket!!! Dudes in BMW's want to race me all the time!!!(???) after they see me on rare occasions pulling away fast from a traffic light or into highway traffic!! (?????)
Anyway, I hope the Toy men keep the Avalon alive and evolving.
Its their flagship for heavens sakes!!!
