Truck sales are down across the industry, but Toyota announced today that the automaker is going to increase Tacoma production at its Tijuana, Baja California plant.
The plant produced 32,249 in 2007 and this year the plant is expected to produce 50,000 Tacomas. Last month Tacoma sales are down 25.9 percent to 11,354 units and in the first six months of this year sales are down 9.1 percent from 92,462 to 84,068.
The Tacoma is also built at Toyota's New United Motor Manufacturing plant in Fremont, California. The Corolla is also built at this same plant. It isn't known if Toyota is planning on reducing production of the Tacoma in favor of the Corolla in Fremont...although it would make sense.

Toyota's increasing the production of a vehicle with dropping sales? Isn't that one of the reasons the Detroit three are suffering so much?

While it doesn't make sense to increase production on a vehicle with dropping sales, it is nice to see that Toyota is focusing on the smaller of their two pick-ups. Ford should concentrate on making a new Ranger, and Chevy should bring back the S-10. Pick-ups are dead useful to some people, but I'm sure a lot of them can make do with smaller pick-ups that get mileage in the same range as large-ish cars.

It's funny to read the comments and see who actually read the article and not just the attention grabbing headline. Toyota is increasing production at one of two production facilities. It's entirely possible that they will reduce production at the second facility, but I don't know that and neither do you.

Toyota can't do something wrong. They must have a greater plan that makes sense. They are perfect and they always think ahead and outside the box and they care and their cars are always the best and their always the best and waaaaaaaaaah....

The title of the article is misleading, should have said Toyota appears to be shifting production from one plant to another.
Big deal, this isn't even news worthy. They appear to want to dedicate one plant to making Corollas.
