It's widely known that GM is currently conducting a review of the HUMMER brand which will most likely result in the brand being sold or eventually killed. GM is claiming that no other brands are currently under review.
Instead of selling off its current brands to raise revenue, GM is most likely going to have more job cuts and cut overlapping models. Do we really need four Lambda crossovers (Enclave, Outlook, Traverse, Acadia)? This plan would be very similar to what Chrysler announced. Killing off brands would likely cost GM even more money since dealers would likely sue (remember Oldsmobile). Also most of GM's brands are of little value to any outside investors, so selling off its current brands will most likely not generate the cash that GM needs.
In general GM is most likely going to scale back its current SUV and truck models in favor of more fuel-efficient models.

Isn't this what we've all been complaining about for a while? Why the hell do they need so many vehicles that are the same? I can't think of any profitable auto manufacturers that do this (other than the Honda Civic / Acura CSX we have here in Canada).

Wouldn't it be better to kill off one of these overlapping companies instead?
- GM
- Ford
- Chrysler.

Tommy Boy,
Killing off Toyota, Honda, and Nissan would single handedly save GM, Ford, and Chrysler...not to mention dramatically reduce the average cost of ownership of a vehicle in general. So that's the way i'm voting...it's a win-win situation.
Dumbass.

@Kevin it would also force me to buy a junk car that i personally wouldent even rent. its just my opinion that 99% of american cars suck so dont take it personally but its a big world and the big 3 need to show the rest of the world why america is the best!

No, see that wouldn't work because Toyota, Honda, and Nissan make decent cars as determined by the American consumer.

I'm on board with TommyBoy. Killing off Toyota, Nissan, and Honda would force me to:
A. Buy a bicycle as my form of transportation
B. Use public transportation
C. Buy a Kia or a Hyundai
The above options are much more appealing to me than putting myself behind the wheel of domestic garbage.

Even Nissan is having problems...
I know what some may say, but go ahead and compare the new Hyndai Genisis vs. Nissan Maxima...
Let's see how may will choose that outdated ugliness called Maxima. I will not even mention American cars!

Kevin (even the name is redneckish), are you so stupid (yes) that you think The Big 3 crappers wouldn't raise their prices when all the competition is gone and you'd be paying $40k for a Malibu?
No Child Left Behind...Kevin was.

Why the hostility over TB's comments? There's been plenty in the news about a possible Ford-GM alliance if not an outright merger due to future financing difficulties facing both companies. The result could be a stronger American player.

If Ford-GM merge, oh the huge manatee!
Really, I'm 99% sure the Ford fans would go for foreign and the GM fans would go foreign. If I'm going to buy domestic, it's going to be GM (maybe Dodge...), but not Ford. And as far as foreign goes, I don't buy Honda.
At this point in auto history, I'm not sure if you can really say X company makes a superior car. Just about every car company has at least 1 good model. And it might be good for different reasons, powertrain, design, refinement, ect.. My Corolla isn't winning awards for styling or fit or finish, but the engine is great. The Cobalt with the new Ecotec setup is getting high praise as well, and even Mazda with the (fairly) new 2.3l is doing good. Sure there are "lemons", but every company as at least one, just make sure you don't buy that one.
And at some point you are comparing apples to bananas to walnuts. Comparing the fit and finish, or technical design of an M5 to any GM (except possibly the Corvette (very long stretch)) is just pointless.
If you are going to do it, go class for class, price for price.
If I buy a new car it's gonna be the Veyron, because it's the best!.....
can you feel the sarcasm.

Makes sense, but the only problem is...by killing off overlapping models, GM will have to kill off a few of its brands at the same time! Think about it: Chevy, Saturn, Pontiac. Cadillac, SAAB, and to a lesser degree, Buick. Chevy trucks, GMC, Hummer.
Also, killing off the Asian brands would either force me to buy European, buy a bicycle, or walk. I wish I could be patriotic and buy domestic cars, but I don't really like to waste my hard-earned money...

Brian is right, there are lemons in each group. I have personally never owned a foreign but i have driven in them and know friends and family members that do own them. All of them work great but domestic cars also seem good. It my be my luck but i have owned a 98' explorer xlt awd and it lasted over 230k miles with no problems at all. and i now drive a 00' silverado with just over 170k. again no problems, 4 wheel drive works beautifully. in fact, out of all the cars my friends and family have owned, the only ones that ever went sour were a ford f*ckus and a nissian ultima, in which both engines blew (and yes, i have more than two friends, i know someone is going to make a comment on that). Maybe people on here are becoming narrow minded and not playing the field when it comes to vehicles. Yeah sure most domestic vehicles have a horrible reputation for poor gas mileage but things are changing. GM is working on getting the crowd back with better fuel economy and working towards better cars than their trucks, isn't that what you want? yet you still call them a waste. If they change for the better for you, you should as least give em another chance. Hell, in today economy here in US, maybe your little dollar will help out the rest of us, like the ones loosing a job over this crap.

American company's did not pay attention in the late 90's with the advent of the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. They gambled that oil would remain stagnant DESPITE a war in an oil producing nation. Now the American companies are behind. I like that GM and Ford are trying to catch up, but they are now a decade behind. For my money, I bought a Honda, known reliability and good mileage. Its too easy of a formula for GM and Ford to fail at, I blame their management.

I would never buy some foreign POS. USA garbage? My family owns a 1917 Chevrolet 490 and I own a 1917 Ford Model T.
Is a Toyota Crapolla going to last that long? I keep all my US daily drivers for 10+ years. Taking out my grandfather's original 1973 Lincoln Mark IV this weekend for the local car show. Sorry but I never see any Pissans, Hondas or Toyodas at the car show.

I have an old horse and buggy from the 1800's that I still take out on weekends. Low maintenance and I only have to replace the horse every 10 years. Darn new-fangled horseless carriages! It's people like you who destroyed the buggy whip industry and its jobs.

Japanese cars rust out before paying the loan off. Don't want to go to Japan. Made in USA. My Dad had a Toyota once. The oil pump died at 99,000 miles. All my GMs have no problem getting to 100K clueless I mean Walldork.
Foreigners have no respect to Vintage automobiles. IIt is all about history. Toyoda use to produce Linens and then copied GM producing cars after the bombs were dropped.

The point is GM really does need to trim the excess levels of vehicles in their lineup.
Chevy should only concentrate on budget cars and drop their truck line.
Buick should concentrate on entry level luxury.
Caddilac should concentrate on ultra luxury.
Saturn should be combined into Saab showrooms as European import model (untouched/unchanged).
GMC and Hummer should be one showroom selling only trucks. If someone is so determined to have a Chevy logo on their GMC truck, the dealer can add a peel off sticker label to the grill.
Pontiac models should be rebranded as either Chevy or Saturn since Pontiac has been being in Ausse cars.
Why would this work? Basically Honda and Acura play the same game. Honda gets you to the base of Acura's line, then if you want more, you go to Acura. Toyota is the same with Lexus.

Hate to break to you. But currently many Toyota, Honda and even Hyundai models are being designed and manufactured in the US. I believe Honda just opened up a new factory in Alabama.
While many "Foreign" car companies are creating more domestic jobs. The big three are outsourcing more and more.
FYI the old concepts between domestic and foreign car companies doesn't really apply today.

Where do most of the profits go over seas.... As I said before it is history. Buick, Chevrolet and Ford were created out of racing. Toyota came from Linens. Americans need a better work ethic and there is no reason that unions are needed today. Individuals should be responisble for there own retirement and health care plans not Corporations nor the Government.
Take a ride to the Greenfield village.

Give domestics "another chance"? Purchasing a vehicle is a rather big investment - we're not talking a couple hundred bucks I can gamble with and not worry about losing.
@Eric
Yeah, GM's dont have a problem getting to 100K miles - so long as you're willing to dump twice the value of the POS into fixing it. Please, I'll stand a better chance with longevity and reliability with buying an old 85 Civic than any new model GM.

The GLBT forum is somewhere else man...
I know, you meant it as hyperbole, but you really sound stupid (as opposed to out-of-date and closed minded like you usually do) when you suggest a 1985 model produced anywhere by anyone could compete with a 2008 model produced anywhere by anyone for reliability or longevity.
Affectionately yours ;) ,

Sorry 180K without any major issues on a Cavalier.... Sludging Toyotas or camshaft that snaps thing. Civic with a can on it I bet. No thanks. I bet the headlight don't turn on automatically. I know a new Yaris won't where's the battery run-down protection. A co-worker left his lights on @ 2:00 in morning after work and his new Yaris had a dead battery. I laughed and got in my Chevy that started with no issues :).
An 85 model that is full of swirls marks and holograms...
Do your schedul maintenance and it will last a long time. Google the Chevy Pickup that went 1 million miles with nothing major done to the powertrain.
Have you ever replaced an alternator on a Hyundai? They built the car around it and it is only accessible on a lift from the bottom and the parts cost more.
I bet you can't even change your own oil?

"on board with Tommy boy" is what i wrote, you moron - go back to grammar school and pass this time, then come talk to me. You must be one those idiots that work for GM.
@Eric
Why do you assume i drive a civic with a can? And that I cant change my own oil? I bet you're poor white trash who cant afford anything but domestic crap - and then spend the rest of your life working at the farmers market to save up money just to throw it back into maintenence. Just out of curiousity, do you enjoy imbreeding?
See? See how stupid that sounded of me to assume? Go pork your sister on your rusted POS pick up you hick.
