Truck Sales are Dead...so Ford is Offering "Employee Pricing" on the F-Series

Yesterday the sales numbers for May were released and they weren't pretty. The Ford F-Series trucks moved from the typical number one spot all the way down to number 5. Ford's SUV and truck sales declined 44 percent in May. To counter the slipping sales Ford is going to offer its "Employee Pricing" on the F-150, F-250 or the F-350 until June 30th.

Hopefully Ford can move those last remaining 08' F-150s before the all-new 2009 model comes out later this year (pictured above).

I've been wanting a truck as a second vehicle for a while so now might be the time to pounce. I visited a Ford dealership 2 weeks ago and the sales guy said they couldn't give away the trucks and conversely the foci and fusions only lasted days on the lot.

At the same time GM and Ford discontinue their small truck offerings, they lament no one wants the big trucks. How about a new Chevy LUV diesel? Not everyone needs a biggie.

I still can't believe that the F150 made the top 5 for sales. Are people wishing the gas prices will come down and buying the trucks in anticipation? No one can explain the logic of the general public.

I can see this promotion helping those who NEED a truck for work, hauling or other purpose where a truck is NEEDED. That said, I seriously doubt it will do anything to entice the average person looking to buy a new vehicle.

I think the days of the truck as a personal conveyance is coming to an end. Not a moment too soon, I say.

When some car is blogged on here, we get a bunch of comments about how it should have a 10.0L supercharged engine in it. Nobody complains about the big sport sedans that have the huge engines that get about 12 mpg. But, talk about a truck and they all turn into knee-jerking haters. It's nice to have a truck. You can pull a boat, haul a bunch of crap in the back, whatever. I used to have a truck, but I sold it a year ago. I'll probably get another one some day as a third vehicle because you can't do much more than drive a little FWD, high-mpg sedan.

Why does it bug you so much if someone wants a truck and buys one?

Agreed.There will still be a large market for full-size trucks,as evident by the F150's 5th place in vehicle sales. ( alot of companies would like their respective vehicles to be 5th highest sellers in the US). The gas price increases are just scaring away the casual buyers. That is, the buyers who want the look and fell of a large truck but do not necessarily need it. Contractors, tradesman, those who need a tow vehicle will still buy.

I wouldn't want my kid driving a truck... they make poor daily transportation. Sure you're safer when you hit another car... but trucks tend to careen off the road all by themselves because of the abysmal handling characteristics (statistically more likely vehicle to get into a single vehicle accident than cars), and in a single car accident they have fewer safety features than modern cars (ladder frames are too rigid, transferring more of the impact force to the occupants).

IMO people who actually drive trucks so that they'll be safer in a multi-car accident are doing two things wrong ... they're buying a vehicle that is less safe OVERALL so they can be safer in a single type of accident.
... they're buying a vehicle that will keep their occupants marginally safer by making the rest of us drastically less safe (I'm surprised some energetic lawyer hasn't tested that in liability litigation yet... certainly someone will eventually).

and I'm a truck guy fwiw... I had a Suburban for towing and utility for many years and since I sold that I've been looking for an older pickup for utility work. I just would never daily drive one.

There is no such thing as too rigid a frame. The more rigid the frame, the better it will withstand impacts. And I think that your statistic of more trucks being involved in single vehicle accident is a bit skewed seeing as there are more trucks on the road than mid-sized family cars. (More trucks=More Truck Accidents) and you can't argue with physics. In a crash between a bigger vehicle and a smaller one, the small one always loses. and I am sorry that I am not willing to sacrifice mine or my wifes safety just to compensate for someone else poor buying decision. Given the choice between my safety and your safety, My safety will win out every single time.

on your argument regarding accidents & safety, your post represents everything that is wrong with the the way people people think today. Last month a child was killed in what police called a very minor collision. The child was a in the rear passenger seat of a compact car that was T-boned by the same vehicle that your wife drives. The cops said if the offending vehicle was not 3 times the size of the car it hit nothing serious would have happened. But because one of the two people chose to drive a 6000lb truck as her daily driver, she walked away with minor bumper damage while the other buried her daughter.

The only positive to come out of all this is on Friday it was anounced the lady of the truck was being sued, not only for causing the accident but for driving a vehicle unsafe towards other drivers on the road. I can only hope she's your wife.

It looks like FORD got Bushed this time but we all get Bushed at the pump, because of this coke head fool we where dumb enough to elect, I wasn’t happy with Bill Clinton and toward the end of his last term I wanted a new president but I didn’t want anyone from Clintons camp to be president but in retrospect that was a major mistake. Now I wish we had allowed the man who took the popular vote to take the office (GORE) not the guy who won on a technicality in a historically sketchy election. I’m done with the Republican Party. If Obama loses I am blaming all the whites in this county of being racist period he might not have experience but how much experience dose McCain have at running the entire country? He’s never been president so I am sure it’s limited. But Obama in highly intelligent and you just can’t teach an old dog a new trick like being smart. I noticed recently that a McCain is now the new change candidate? And his brand of change was the correct one, I am sure it had nothing to do with how well it was received by Obama’s supporters. What it looks like is that McCain is just going to get steam rolled in the general election, I have never voted in the past and this is going to be my first vote and I am proud to help barrack fulfill the dream of countless men and allow him to use his intelligence to turn this whole thing around for everyone

The single vehicle stat (along with most other stats the Gov. puts out on car safety) is a "per mile driven" thing so it factors out things like numbers on the road.

And there very definitely IS such a thing as too rigid a chassis. think of it this way... if your chassis is compliant enough that when you run into a brick wall at 30mph it crumples up by 3' as it decelerates to a stop... that's means the force of the impact is spread out over those 3' of crumpling... the car absorbes the energy of impact and spreads out the g forces the human inside the car is subject to. With an imaginary "infinitely rigid" vehicle... it comes too an immediate stop when it hits the wall, transferring the entire force of impact to the driver - instantly. In those circumstances even a relatively low speed impact can be fatal.

As long as the cockpit integrity is maintained, a less rigid frame is far better in an accident than a rigid one.

Dave, while I can understand the reasoning behind your theory regarding rigidity, it is seriously flawed & completely inaccurate. You have confused chassis rigidity with designated outer collapsible 'crumple zones'. The more rigid the chassis, the better it is in every imaginable aspect (performance, safety, etc, etc, etc).

My father in law uses trucks on his cattle ranch. He never buys a new truck. He always buys his trucks second hand from “good city folks” (whatever that means), "because trucks driven by an urban trucker don’t have much wear and tear".

He will never buy a new truck no matter what employee pricing ford throws at him; Most of his rancher friends I know off are also like that.

I see that trucks are becoming just what they are supposed to be: utility vehicles. I know now that they were never really designed for safety. I have owned a Chevy truck and SUV in the past, but I sold them after my daughter was born. Why? They handle like crap and suck cash from my pocket. I almost rolled the SUV when dodging some road debris on the interstate. They are their own worst enemy at 45+ mph. I used to think they gave me prestige, but what can I say, I was stupid when I was younger.
