GM Postpones Redesigned Versions of its SUVs and Full-Size Trucks

2008_escalade.jpg
GM is postponing redesigning its large SUVs and full-size pickups as the market shifts towards more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Gas prices are way over $4 a gallon in many parts of the country, which is forcing many consumers to finally look at more efficient vehicles. This has forced many of the automakers to rethink their current production plans. GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Honda and so on have all announced plans to decrease truck and SUV production in favor of more fuel-efficient small cars and crossovers.

GM has now announced that the life cycle of its current full-size trucks and SUVs is going to be extended. This means if you were hoping for a redesigned Chevy Silverado or GMC Yukon you are going to have to wait longer.

Companies that do not adapt to the market deserve to lose business.

Noya:

My god that Escalade is hideous!

And people were paying $60k for one of these dressed up Suburbans?

Tommy Boy:

Look at GM grow a brain!

lowest iq:

aaahhhh, that truck looks like an extention to that building....

waldorf and statler:

Wait till you see the people that get out of it.

Sounds like a good move.

Now, will they produce smarter products in time for them to save any semblance of market share? Time will tell.

cobaltssman:

FWD 4 bangers will take over the world.

JohnBo:

^ Or AWD electic cars, we'll see. Who buys an SUV these days? Going to the gas pump and spending 150 dollars every 4-5 days isn't my cup of tea. I already think my G35 takes a lot of gas, I can't imagine what my neighbour goes through filling up his H2 hummer lol. I think trucks would be good with electric engines since what they need most is torque. The torque of an electric engine is at its maximum at 0 rpm and that would be perfect for trucks towing heavy objects. I'm predicting in 10-20 years, they only trucks on the road will be owned by those who actually use them (construction workers, contractors etc.) Not many SUVs will be out there unless we're able to find a good energy source to replace Petrol.

SteelCity1981:

Well i guess if we were all millionaires 4 dollars a gallon would be nothing, but in reality most people can't afford 4 dollars a gallon with suv's and trucks, so it's about time these companies started to adapt to change. I'd kill the Big SUV market altogether if i was one of these compaines.

gm0n3y:

Good move GM, now they can get those engineers/designers/accountants making new smaller vehicles.

J.D.:

What did they have to redesign? Other than the interiors with no head room at all if you are 6 ft+ (standard GM disease). They need to design a way to put the 6L80e into the trucks- damn, bet it bolts right in, solved that one.

godZilla28:

This has got to be one of the ugliest cars (or trucks) since the Wagon Queen Family Truckster in the Lampoon movie "Vacation". In fact, maybe this IS the Wagon Queen Family Truckster.

By the way, both vans and SUVs are just versions of the same thing: the station wagon. We were sold down the river with the whole SUV mania. The sooner we get rid of these road hogs, the better. Kill the Escalade and all the other obese gas guzzlers. We'll be better off without them.

ha ha:

look at me, im going to drive an suv just to piss you haters off. if you can afford an escalade, you can afford gas.

Joe:

I don't care what gas costs I will never get rid of my new GMC Sierra
