BMW is going to unveil the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS) at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009 according to Auto Motor und Sport.

The 5-Series based sedan will take a lot of styling cues from the recently introduced X6 SAV. It will feature a hatchback design, a raised ride height and be about an inch longer than the X6. Most of the sedan's mechanicals will come from the 5 and 7-Series. All-wheel-drive will also be optional.

The PAS is expected to go on sale shortly after its unveiling in September 2009.

AutoBot:

Is it just me or does it seem that BMW in peril of diluting their products too much?

I'm no BMW fan, but I respect the fact that their cars are used as a benchmark for almost every automaker out there. However, if they keep creating things (please note the word "thing") like this monstrosity they're bound to start losing that world leading edge.

gm0n3y:

I, for one, actually like this or at least the market segment. Vehicles like this are helping people to move out of their larger SUVs into sedan based "crossovers" or whatever they want to call them. News like this makes me happy because I'd rather see this on the road than another X7 (or whatever their large SUV is called).

Brian:

Umm, yeah CUV....

Or as what we here in the states call it....

A station wagon. Only now with a hatch back! OH where was this when I needed it? An off road sport utility station wagon, that's so revolutionary. To bad Subaru has been pushing them off the line for like 20 years.

The CUV market is complete crap. There are only 5 types of vehicles (as in 4 wheels).

Coupe - 2 Door
Sedan - 4 Door (This includes wagons)
Truck - and all derivatives
Van - including mini
SUV - or a box on wheels.

I mean think about it. Everything I know of on the road goes into 1 of those categories. I know there is a difference between an Xb and an Escalade, but they are fundamentally the same.

But it's European and BMW, so it'll sell. If nothing more than being the NEW BMW.

Insipient calabash:

I'm a huge fan of BMW. I even own one. This thing is a silly idea though. It's a 4 door hatchback. Quite silly. Why is BMW making so many cars, I mean things?

426Hemi:

This THING look just like any other BMW on the road. Well, any BMW made in the late 90s and later any way.

adrian:

something like a toyota rav4 or subaru forester
