2009 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI Unveiled with 208 HP and 36 mpg

2009_audi_a5_silver_2.jpg
Today Audi unveiled a new version of the 2009 Audi A5 that is powered by a 2.0L TFSI engine.

The 2.0L TFSI engine is based on the 1.8L TFSI from the new A4. It features 208 horsepower and 258 l-ft. of torque, which propels the car from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. At the same time it achieves 36 mpg (42.8 Imperial mpg). The engine can also be mated to either the front-wheel-drive or Quatto all-wheel-drive system.

The 2009 A5 with the 2.0L TFSI engine will be available in Europe in August. There is no word if the US will get the same engine.

PRESS RELEASE:
ALL-NEW HIGH-TORQUE 2.0 TFSI ENGINE IS A PERFECT FIT FOR AUDI A5

- Latest Turbo FSI engine joins Audi coupé range and reiterates that fun and frugality are far from mutually exclusive

- A5 2.0 TFSI now available to order in front-wheel-drive or quattro all-wheel-drive forms priced at £28,760 OTR and £30,285 OTR – first deliveries in August

- All-new Turbo FSI engine is based on 1.8 TFSI from new A4, but adds Audi valvelift technology for improved engine ‘breathing’ to maximise performance and efficiency

- 211PS @ 4,300 to 6,000rpm, 350Nm @ 1,500-4,200rpm

- A5 2.0 TFSI 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, top speed 155mph, combined mpg 42.8, CO2 154g/km

A newly developed Turbo FSI petrol engine available from this week for the Audi A5 provides the sought-after coupe with yet another choice blend of pace and pence-per-mile efficiency. The new 211PS A5 2.0 TFSI can be ordered in either front-wheel-drive or quattro permanent all-wheel-drive forms for £28,760 OTR or £30,285 OTR, and will reach its first UK customers in August.

The new high-tech 2.0-litre unit is derived from the already much praised 1.8 TFSI engine introduced recently in A3, A4 and A5 models, but takes its efficiency a step further still through the use of new Audi valvelift technology. By employing sliding cam units mounted on the intake camshaft that allow for more variation in the degree of valve lift, the engine is able to ‘breathe’ even more effectively, switching to a higher cam profile when strong acceleration is required, or a lower profile that requires less fuel and air compression when throttle usage is more relaxed.

The new 2.0-litre TFSI unit delivers 211PS from 4,300rpm and a very impressive 350Nm torque maximum from just 1,500rpm – more even than the 3.2-litre V6 FSI unit also powering A5 models. It enables the front-wheel-drive A5 2.0 TFSI with six-speed manual transmission to cover the 0-62mph sprint in 6.9 seconds, reach a top speed of 155mph and return up to 42.8mpg according to the combined cycle test. And despite doing full justice in performance terms to the purposeful styling of the A5, it also shows restraint where emissions are concerned, with an output of 154g/km for the front-wheel-drive version.

Standard specification for front-wheel-drive and quattro all-wheel-drive versions of the new A5 2.0 TFSI includes xenon headlamps with trademark LED strip daytime running lamps, 17-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, 3-zone electronic climate control, a 10-speaker Concert CD audio system, full Milano leather upholstery and rear acoustic parking.

Car looks slick.

cobaltssman:

OMG give me a raise at work! I want that car! its probably going to be like 38k. :[ Its beautiful.

cobaltssman:

OMG give me a raise at work! I want that car!

Eric:

now this is the engine of the future
1.8l, 208HP, full size sedan 0-100 in 6.9 sec, and 36mpg
awesome, screw the hybrids

DrFruit:

The new engine is 2.0l, derived from 1.8l.

waldorf and statler:

wonderfull. Now give me the 2.0l TDI (with 225 hp)

Bill:

36 mpg and 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds... how the hell does that work?

if it was rear wheel drive it would be the world's most perfect coupe

Tim:

Lets first see it hit those numbers in the real world, or reasonably close to it.

Mike:

You don't get 36 mpg AND 0-62 in 6.9 seconds. You get one or the other (or somewhere in between) depending on how you drive. But having said that, I think they've done a good job in increasing the efficiency.

Cashmoney:

At least the AWD has a 40:60 split now, unlike previous 50:50

Rod:

@Eric:

Full size sedan???

I assume you speaking of other hypothetical future cars, and not calling this a full size sedan.

dennisil:

@waldorf and statler

did you ever do the math on how much you would save if your car had a diesel engine?

well its not a lot when diesel is 5$/gal.

it costs me 20$ a day to drive to a job i have only made 12,000$ year to date income, that means i spend 30% of my daily salary to drive to work... another 30% goes to uncle sam and that leaves me with not even enough to pay back student loans and car payment. i have credit debt adding up. god help us!

im going to quit my job and sell my car and go on welfare that way i at may make less money but i wont have stress...

nice audi too bad i cant imagine buying a remote controll car not to mention a new lux car....

Jung:

Your're in the 30% tax bracket at a $12K job?

Oxygenthief:

LOL @ Jung!

When denisil said he gives 30% to uncle sam he meant his actual 3 toothed uncle Samuel in Louisiana.

ROFL!

JohnBo:

@ dennisil
Dam your @$$ is broke haha. I'm just wondering if its someone posting under your name. We have public transit here in Toronto for people who live out in the suburbs but I guess with the cheap gas prices in the US, public transit is pretty low on the prority list

Tax Pro:

Way more of your pay goes to Uncle same than the tax bracket you're in. Don't forget Social security and Medicaid. SS is 6.2% of your pay AND 6.2 your employer pays on top of it on your behalf. Medicaid is 1.45% AND another 1.45 your employer pays on your behalf. Without including employer matching my witholding for all taxes is @ 27.4% including my state's income tax(6% going to uncle George, no uncle Sam). If you include my employers portion it's up to 35%, despite my being in the 25% income bracket.

My question for dennisil is why he supposedly drives a newer Acura TL and makes 24k a year. That's bad economics, you need to go get yourself a cheap POS. Also, you claim to get 29mpg rgularly out of your TL. @ $4 a gallon that means you drive 145 miles a day? If you've go a 70+ mile one way commute every day for a $12 an hour job that really does suck. No wonder you're so embittered at the world every time you post on here. I'd go jump off a bridge.

mbw:

Wait...ya'll have Uncle Sam in Canada too?

jake:

Cool! Let's see it hit those number and meet US emmissions and safety requirements.

I'd still rather have a Lexus.

JohnBo:

Most people shouldn't buy a car that’s more and their entire year’s worth in income. If you do make 24k and drive a 30k car, that’s bad financial planning. I don't see how you’re able to afford the lease/monthly payments if that’s truly how much your making.

Back to the main topic. IMHO, I believe Audi has one of the greatest design teams out there. There's never anything awkward looking about their cars. (awkward examples: IS-F rear exhausts, GT-R front end, the new Acura’s) They’re also very innovative when it comes to engineering. They implement very interesting and helpful technologies into all their new vehicles. However, I have quite a few friends complaining about their VW and Audi's going in for recalls and repairs ALL the time so maybe their lacking some resources in the quality control department.

dennisil:

last 8 years i made over 50k its just been that bad for me this year and thanks for your concern folks of course you bunch of keyboard jockies can make fun of someone in a bad situation... thats so pitifull, i can always get a new job but you cant stop being who you are and that is you are all jerks. lol

Tax Pro:

im sorry dennis i know your a good guy and you have intellegent comments on the issues that effect our lives. i hope i didnt insult you or make you feel bad because of my comments. i honestly said them becaus ei feel like a big man whenever i see someone i can make fun of. i know in my heart that as long as you forgive me we can always be friends.

Mike M:

People act surprised that people buy cars and other things outside their means, because they see it on TV. Then those that do live within their means end up being punished with worse interest rates and footing the bill for social programs. I don't have a lot of sympathy for those that bought houses as part of a "get rich quick" scheme only to have it backfire. Housing prices would not have gone up so much if people hadn't bought into it. Same with cars...I see it everyday. There are many people that should not be buying BMWs, Lexus', and cars like this Audi. The same goes for buying an Escalade and sticking 24+" wheels on it when you barely have a job. Now, back on topic. I like the styling of the Audi and am eager to see how it realistically stacks up performancewise and with fuel economy.

bubba551:

If comparing to the EPA numbers of other cars, you should probably use 29-30mpg, because that's about the most that the combined EPA mileage for this car would be.

dennisil:

@ Tax Pro

its ok i dont take anything on a disscussion forum too seriously because i may have an alterior motive for anything i tell anyone anyway... its not like anyone has to be honest about anything on here and if i was telling you guys i made 100K a year you might say im lying so ill just keep on writing whatever i want and if you feel like breaking my balls over it go 4 it !!! im not so uptight that i cant laugh at myself.

hey and tax guy can i ask you a few questions ?

how come you have been researching my posts so much?

do you agree with me that obama is the man?

if you could own any car what car would it be?

Tax Pro:

well i figure you are a slippery one and on this board you cant really ever tell whos posting what so its hard to actually get into it with anyone...lol

1) i thaught what you said about our economy back 3 months ago was truly inspirational. it was a post you had in a article about how the dodge aspen hybrid was comming out. you nailed it right on the head.

2) I actually dont like Obama because my father and grandfather where both strict racists so they would beat me if i ever had a black friend, not a big deal i just like my meat white!

3) I would choose a 1980's SL Mercedes convertable, its not fast but im an old man and i just want to drive in luxury and fell the history and classyness of the machine not the speed.

BS!:

@ dennisil:

"last 8 years i made over 50k its just been that bad for me this year and thanks for your concern folks of course you bunch of keyboard jockies can make fun of someone in a bad situation... thats so pitifull, i can always get a new job but you cant stop being who you are and that is you are all jerks. lol"

You beat GM, Ford & Chrysler up daily on here. You're just getting a taste of your own medicine.

cobaltssman:

@dennisil

Why don't you stop posting here until your annual income rises above 50K again. This forum is for real car owners to discuss real car issues. Sorry, but car advice from the homeless is just noise and certainly doesn't hold much credibility with me.

unknown:

The fuel economy on this sports diesel is a joke if they can pull 48 out of the a3 why not this pos power wise is supposedly similar guess this thing weighs as much as the moon. As for you idiots talking about tax brakets it may be bad in america but id rather be paying 30% then 50-60% as most countries in europe do and paying 5+ dollars in taxes per gallon of gas no thanks.

Will the real Tax Pro please stand up?:

Obviously the second two Tax Pro posts are from an imposter. The imposter has terrible grammar and the posts are laden with sarcasm.

@ unknown, this isn't a diesel, and it's must larger than an A3.

The US does have lower taxes but they're still too high. European countries are fully socialist. The US is getting there, just wait till Obama is elected and we'll join the Europeans with 50-60% taxes.

unknown:

your right about that my bad this isnt so bad then being its a gas motor

dennisil:

@BS!

I know you all feel that anyone who doesn’t stoke the flames of nationalistic pride must be a commie. Unfortunately for you all this is a free society that I can express my utter distain for corporations that don’t have the right people in place and can not make enough money so they can sustain their workforces and offer innovative advancement in their industries. This country is full of corporations looking for the government bail out once there P/L’s go in the red. I am going to be a real American and speak my mind on here any time I wish, the choice I leave to you is weather you respond to my sometimes ill constructed criticisms.

I peak from the heart and friends let me tell you how I feel. I don’t care about the big 3 in any way I used to be in auto sales for a Buick dealer and ever since that summer I have truly and really felt jaded by the American automotive industry. (Safety recalls not being done; quality of even their expensive models was sub par.) When I began working there I had the idea that I wanted to buy a Buick Regal GS the one with the Joseph Addoud package. Well to quote Garth Brooks "thank god for unanswered prayers" I never saw more cars coming back for repair than that piece of crap.

I never owned an American made auto, I have plenty of other American made goods and I would love to own a Harley but not a dodge or ford or Chevy ect. In my opinion they don’t have the soul and passion to make me feel like driving them is special. They are fleet vehicles and rental cars. I know the trucks use much stronger frames than their Asian counter parts.

I would consider buying an American car if there was a lengthily track record for designee and quality and i imagine the greatest country in the world will one day lead the pack but why buy sub par examples until that day comes... its your money you spend it however you wish. I can only make decisions for myself and hope they work out and my decision to buy from Nissan, Honda, and Acura have been great so far. My latest car the Acura TL is built in Ohio employing more skilled American labor than some Chevy’s (maybe) and the only part that made in Japan is the transmission.

I am sorry that I had a falling out with some of you yesterday I am not here to make friends with you I just like to write my musings for you all to read and interpret any way you wish! I’m here to stay so thank you for your support those of you that occasionally agree with me and also thank you to everyone who disagrees with my opinion because you took the time to read it and you didn’t just bash me for who I am but you constructively made an effort to help me understand why I am wrong.

ps
(I am never wrong)

Dennisil

dennisil:

@cobaltssman

go take a walk and then eat some fruit or somthing, you are full on negitave energy.

The real Tax Pro:

@ Dennis

Since you seem to care about TR so much, I'll respond to your questions.

hey and tax guy can i ask you a few questions ?

Sure

how come you have been researching my posts so much?

I don't research them, I just remember what people post about. I have a decent memory.

do you agree with me that obama is the man?

He can't be the man since I'm the man. : o P Honestly, I think his social programs for 'change' are going to make taxes skyrocket, and I'd rather than not happen. I like spending my own money, not having the gvt spend it for me. I'm more of a Libertarian than a Socialist. You seem to hate taxes, so honestly you shouldn't like him either. I think McCain sucks too though. I don't know who to vote for. All the parties waste money like there's no tomorrow.

if you could own any car what car would it be?

A 911 GT3. But only if I wasn't allowed to sell it and purchase and maintenance cost were of no concern to me. Otherwise I think expensive cars are a huge waste of money, but I still love them.

cobaltssman:

@ dennisil:
Dude im sorry that was that stupid gril CKV she keeps posting things under my name. Because i told her to stop posting " I LOVE WHINNING" i srsly feel you about you job. Im struggling too and i have school to pay for car and premium gas, and rent. Times are hard bro.

adrian:

nice engine

Allen:

I've actually already seen this powertrain in action in Germany. And it works out roughly as expected, with fuel economy (by my measurements, in the same way we measure here) giving the car about 33 mpg in combined driving, more city than highway.

You know, Audi has been one of the better German companies recently. Its not like Mercedes, who launched the terrible new C-Class (all it does is look good, but its slower, heavier, and less fuel efficient). And its not like BMW, which released a good car in the 335 but has ugly styling in so so fuel economy due to high weight.

While the other two Germans times have been getting slower and cars bigger and heavier, Audi is keeping it real, so to speak. Well done.
