PRESS RELEASE:
Chevrolet announces performance results and pricing for the new ultimate-performance Corvette
DETROIT – The official Corvette ZR1 numbers are in and they’re good. Very good:
- $103,300 MSRP (including $850 destination charge)
- EPA-estimated fuel economy of 14 city and 20 highway
- 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds
- 0-100 mph in 7.0 seconds
- Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph
The Corvette ZR1 also has a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h), making it the fastest Corvette ever produced and ranking it among the global super cars of commensurate performance. None of those other super cars, however, equals the ZR1’s performance-per-dollar ratio.
“The ZR1 is an incredible machine by any measure,” said Ed Peper, North American Vice President, Chevrolet. “There’s simply no other vehicle in the world that does a better job of balancing performance, price and fuel economy.”
Performance perspective
The Corvette ZR1’s 0-60 performance is 0.3-second quicker than the already-quick Corvette Z06 and the 0-100-mph performance is nearly a full second quicker - 7 seconds vs. the Z06’s 7.9 seconds. It is performance that is equal to or better than many super cars costing substantially more.
“A favorable power-to-weight ratio gives the ZR1 an advantage over the competition and performance that has to be experienced to fully appreciate,” said Tom Wallace, Corvette chief engineer. “Of course, on a racetrack, drivers of competitors’ cars may appreciate the ZR1 in a whole different manner.”
And the racetrack isn’t the only place where the ZR1 trumps its super-car competitors – it beats them at the gas pump, too. According to fueleconomy.gov, the ZR1’s EPA-rated 14 city and 20 highway mileage ratings beat 2008 competitors such as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano (11 city / 15 highway); the Lamborghini Murcielago (8 city / 13 highway) and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage (12 city / 19 highway). They’re competitive with the Dodge Viper (13 city / 22 highway) and the Porsche 911 GT3 (15 city / 22 highway).
Under the carbon-fiber hood
A new LS9 6.2L supercharged small-block engine powers the ZR1’s performance capability. Heavy-duty and lightweight reciprocating components support high-rpm performance, while a new, sixth-generation supercharger (and complementing charge-cooling system) helps the LS9 make big power and torque across the rpm range. The engine is hand-assembled at GM’s Performance Build Center, in Wixom, Mich.
In addition to the LS9 engine, the ZR1 is a technology powerhouse, designed with lightweight and unique components that reinforce its performance with a confidant feel on either a highway or road course.
Options
The standard ZR1 comes with accoutrements based on the Z06, including lightweight seats and lightweight content. The available uplevel interior package includes power-adjustable, heated and leather-trimmed sport seats (embroidered with the ZR1 logo); side air bags; Bose premium audio system; navigation system; Bluetooth connectivity; power telescoping steering column; custom leather-wrapped interior available in four colors and more. Chrome wheels are the only other available option on the ZR1. Detailed pricing noted below.
- $103,300 Base MSRP including destination
- $1,700 Gas guzzler tax
- $10,000 Option package
- $2,000 Chrome wheels

They gotta do something about that Plexiglas window in the hood, it just takes away from the car. They also need to change to front lights, they're too round and don't match the straight edges around the rest of the car. All in all, a great looking car still. Performance is amazing (obviously)...I wonder if they improved the interior. For that price, it no longer a "value hp" car, its a luxury sports car and the interior should match.

you're forgetting something tho, haha for every GT-R bought, you are actually hurting Nissan, hence the fact they are losing A LOT of money for every each and single one they sell because the production cost is a lot higher than they are selling it at, just to make sales. LOSERS

I think of the $ 103,300, they spent exactly $ 300.00 on the interior.
I LOVE WHINING !

And you're forgetting that Toyota lost money on every Prius they sold but they're now the leader in hybrid technology with a head start the Big 3 can only envy. WINNERS

True...I disagree with Nissan being losers for the GT-R. Assuming the car lives up to it's reputation and has good durability, it will earn customers for both Nissan and Infiniti. Don't forget that Bugatti/Volkswagen lost a lot of money on every Veyron they sold, because the point of the car wasn't sales...it was prestige and technological achievement. Nissan is accomplishing the same thing. The GT-R kicks ass and it's a coupe (although the back seats are about big enough for a 3-year old. The Corvette is great too, but no real achievement. They just took what many of their aftermarket companies have done for years (i.e. Lingenfelter, Callaway, etc.). I like the car except the hood would have to be replaced. I don't care for the window.

An impressive car, but $105,000 and side air bags still aren't standard? And what's up with the Cavalier styled interior and hokey exterior. If they tacked on some more plastic, it would be a Pontiac! I'd rather take a Porsche or something slower.

@ John, you're exactly right. The Z06 is special, this car is not.
I would much rather have a loaded 911 Carrera S (0-60 - 3.9s) or a slightly used 911 Turbo...but that's just me.

I would buy a Z06 then raid the aftermarket, those engines are pretty easy (er, if you have the money) to make even more power than the zr1, though it probably wouldnt come with a warranty. (though does the zr1?)

There were 3 rules that the Nissan CEO put out when he approved the new GTR. It had to be profitable, affordable and beat the 911. Its achieved all three. Nissan DOES make money on the GTR, thats why it shares the G35/FX35 platform rather than using an exclusive one.

Nissan also said it makes 480 hp. Dynos say it is making between 430-475hp at the wheels, more like 505-560 hp with 15% lose. Nissan also says they don't defy physics, they merely put physics to use. Well, I am pretty sure 0-12% drive train lose is defying physics with AWD. The Vette manages about 13% with just rear wheel and the trans bolted right to the rear axle.
Anything you want to believe that Nissan tells you without looking at hard evidence?

Why doesn't Nissan just say it puts out 550hp then? What's the point in underrating it?
It doesn't come with all that crap standard because all that crap adds weight and slows the car down. If someone is buying this car to race why would they want Nav and airbags? That'd be a waste of money as they'd just pull it out anyways. Just becuse a car is expensive doesn't mean it has to be luxurious. Props to Chevy for making a real sports car and not a luxury coupe.
This car will have GM's 5 year 100k powertrain warranty, as does the Z06.
I'd buy the Z06 before this anyways. I personally think the Corvette looks better and would be more fun to drive(RWD) than the GTR, albeit slower. I'm still waiting on their Nurburgring time.

The Japanese manufacturers have a long tradition of lowballing performance specs, the GTR is no exception (much closer to 600/600 than 500/500).

Why they don't say it is 550 hp CCL? Simple, at 550 hp, it's lbs/hp rating becomes 6.9. The Z06 comes in at 6.3 for lbs/hp. Now all of the sudden, the reason the GT-R is 'faster' isn't because of applying physics, its because it has very close to the same hp per lb and AWD.
Then the Jap fanbois couldn't say it was the 2nd coming. Great car, yes. Weighs too much, yes. Too much tencho crap controlling the ride, yes.
Not my idea of a fun time for 70k, and overweight, self controlling car.

i think its too expensive, this isnt that special of a vette, its just a little faster than the z06 but the cost dosent make up for that, its too much, any new vette over $100k sounds truly overpriced, it may be a great car, it may beat the GTR in a race but its at least 20K more off the lot so if i was ready to buy a 100K car i would not go for the all too common vette, id be at an aston martin dealer haggeling over a V8 Vantage instead, because .1 seconds faster makes little to no diffrence when your not getting the attention of every motorist on the road, average people think your driving just another vette, whereas the unique styling and awesome sound track of the aston will never cease to put a smile on your face, you really want the fastest car go buy a 1000cc sport bike its alot faster than any of these cars including the GTR.

I'm going to jump in here with you guys.
You'd think this car would have a higher towing capacity, like the Toyota Tundra. Also, it's rated fuel economy is well below a Civic.
$103,300?? For what? A car that doesn't even make 800 hp? I'd rather have a Bugatti Veyron.
You'd think it would've scored higher in government crash test ratings. How am I supposed to feel safe taking the kids to soccer practice? At least my Highlander has 5 star crash ratings.
Man, if only they took some lessons from Subaru and made it AWD. How is anyone supposed to drive this in the snow?
Lastly, that windshield is really corny. It'd be better if they copied the Nissan Altima.

1) Props to GM for not including all the extras. Sure it makes the interior look like crap, but it keeps the weight (and the price) down.
2) Still too expensive for what it is, the Z06 is a much better option, but the limited production of this will ensure that they sell. There are legions of die-hard middle aged Vette fans out there.
3) Yes, the GTR is a better car, and I'd take one over this in a heartbeat. But like I said, some people just love Vettes.
4) The problem with taking an Aston over the Vette is that over the life of the Aston, it will cost you vastly more than the Vette. They are also completely different cars: track car vs luxury grand touring car.
5) As for HP ratings, Nissan says 480HP and they're almost making it at the wheels. Good for Nissan, who cares about flywheel HP when the wheels aren't seeing that. The engine is only one part of the car.

@WhyNot
hey why not give us examples of what you would expect from a car like this rather than be sarcastic to the point of exhaustion, i thaught you where being funny but by the 7the observation you made i lost the punch line and saw only condesending remarks that none of the intellegent posters on here make unless they are trying to stoke the fire of anti/domestic - anti/import distain that we all have built up over our lives as a result of our lifes experiences, i never had a family member work for the big 3 american companies so i never had it hit home but i have had many great imports in my day that have held their ground on there quality and capabilitys. with only one exception (2002.5 vw passat) but that was my only german car i owned and its prob gona be my last unless i can afford a nice one... you get what you pay for i bet the ZR1 is going to be fan_fukin_tastic but i dont care, just like hillbillys wont vote for Obama i wont buy a domesticly produced car... point of fact.
