Maybe this will replace the Tribeca, which isn't exactly flying off the dealership floors.

Why does Subaru think everyone in the US wants AWD?
Why does Subaru think everyone in the US wants a huge hood scoop?
Why does Subaru think this will sell here? It might, given that Subies are a brand that is well built, but has lost marketshare, and has seemed to redirect itself at 20 somethings that love to battle Mitsubishi EVOs all day. While that is true for a portion of the customers, Subaru has neglected the families.
The way I see it, Subaru has 2 types of customers: (1) The 20 year old that "customizes" his blue WRX STi with the gold rims, huge exhaust tip, and drives annoyingly around town, and (2) the flannel wearing lesbians that camp and canoe and hike and drive Foresters.
(insert laugh track here)

Subaru thinks everyone needs AWD, the same way it's an option on all Euro cars...
I have no idea on the hood scoop, even though I like it.
As far as selling here? Two things are killing them, style and gas mileage. Fine the STi gets like 22mpg, it makes 300hp so that's a reasonable trade off. But the base 2.5 only gets around 23-24 average...that's not great. Couple the AWD into everything and it has similar acceleration as my Corolla (hp to weight ratio wise). And style? WTF happened to the STI?.... And it looks like they borrowed a page from Toyota on the current styling. Everything is so bland.
All subaru needs to do is bring back a decent version of the Impreza (with a coupe as well), get Toyota to license some of their VVTI tech, rework the EJ25 series motors and you should be able to get close to 28 consistently out of it. Drop the active suspension junk, lighten up the chassis and you might actually have something.
Or with the way things are going, just let Toyota design the car and you sell Toyota a powertrain.

Global warming will eventually put Subaru out of business. Once Colorado and Montana start getting less snow, Subaru is SOL.
I would say Rich's generalization of the Subarus buys is correct for any state that doesn't have mountains and large amounts of snow. Drive around those state's though and Subarus are like 1 in 3.

You guys make some good points and I would add that Subaru went all AWD during the SUV craze in this country. I don't know if they did it to try and appeal to SUV drivers, or it was just simpler to sell all the cars as AWD.
The lesbian comment is funny, a friend of mine calls the Forester the Lesbomobile.
I like the last generation Forester, (no I am not a lesbian, but I do dig chicks) now, it just looks like another SUV.
We get decent snow here but I still find FWD with snow tires does fine.
