Corvette ZR1 chief engineer Tadge Juechter recently sat down to answer many of the current questions about the upcoming Chevy Corvette ZR1.
Juechter revealed that just 2,000 ZR1's are going to built per year and that the 638 horsepower Corvette is going to be the most fuel efficient 600+ horsepower car on the market. He didn't give the actual EPA numbers, but he did say that it will be slightly less fuel efficient than the current Z06, which is currently rated at 15/24. The engineer also stated that pricing is going to be released later this month, and that GM is strongly encouraging dealers to not add markups to the vehicle. Also ZR1 accessories will not be available for buyers that want to add them to their current (lesser powered) Corvettes.

Before all the American/GM/Chevrolet/Corvette haters go off. Don't forget that this is one of the few products GM makes that is essentially at full capacity. The ZR1 is for panache and dominance, not to increase Corvette sales.
Go ahead, slam away.

One thing about the 'Vette engines that have always amazed me - my (relatively old) 3.0 V6 5sp manages 160HP and about 17/28. Even newer sports V6 engines manage around 19 city and high 20's highway...
Too bad AWD isn't an option - throwing down over about 350HP without AWD can be difficult in itself. I guess some people are more into peeling out and max power than 100% traction, though.
Offer it in AWD!!!

ill take it in dark blue, black, red, oh silver looks good too. yeah just give me 4 of them and ill be set. that way I can drive one into the ground, and start on the next one. that should last me 15 years of driving fun and my license being revoked. and i can save a penny at the pump too... well.. nvm.. the way ill driving it, ill still only get 9/13mpg, if that.

Don't get me wrong, its a great car but if one passes by, I wouldn't be staring at it. Society has brainwashed me into thinking negatively about American cars.

If I saw one I would definately stare at it. This car rocks. Im sure the suspension is up to the task of the handling the hp/tq, R&D on corvette suspension has been going on for quite some time now. BTW I dont think it will matter much if chevy doesnt offer the zr1 parts as over the counter add-ons, im sure the aftermarket will put out equal or better parts, probably cheaper too. They already do on the engine side.

@ Alex
Rich people want exclusivity, that's why they won't be offering them.
@ Tony
Are you criticizing the MPG or complimenting it? Corvettes get very good MPG considering how fast they are.
The basic formula for a sports car is, and always has been, RWD 2 seater. While 4wd is obviously faster (GTR) I still prefer RWD for the control and fun(not peeling out, but sliding sideways...yes). The one non-RWD car I ever had was the one I totaled. I'm sure there's a lot of people who share my sentiments too.
Corvettes have always been high power front engine, RWD, and lightweight. It's worked for 50+ years so I don't think it needs changing.

Amazing what American manufacturers can do when they actually want to build a "nice" car. Be pretty interesting to see what kind of numbers it turns in.
One of the great things about the ZR1 is that you could actually own one, drive it, and as long as you've looked after it - sell it for what you paid (or more) 10 years later... try that with a Nissan.

While I'm not a fan of American cars and I prefer how the Z06 has a naturally aspirated V-8, this is the sickest looking Corvette ever with it's wide body and the front splitter/lower cladding...real race car looking.
Unfortunately, they had to fuck it up with the stupid Plexiglas window in the hood that shows what?
Even more plastic...what a fucking joke, ruins the car. I wonder what douchebag thought to mention it at the last minute in a board meeting.
"You know all the Italian supercars have widows to show off their engines..."

String you sound like the kind of redneck that keeps rusted out old ass cars all over his front lawn waiting for the time a collector might be looking for that particular model for parts. dude just open a junk yard and make some money being a junk collector. your talking about 10 or 20 years down the line... im not sure what rock you live under but do you think a car that runs on gas is going to have alot of use that far down tha line? i think you are out of touch with the world and with our limited supply of oil. you will only make money on a car like this if you keep it sealed in a aplastic bubble and never drive it. but thats not your style is it your half of the people on here are trying to fugure out if its safe to drive in the snow... lol fools

Hi everyone,
I appreciate all your interest in the ZR1. We're looking forward to getting the ZR1 into dealerships and right now we're continuing with the development of the highest performing Corvette yet and we're excited to see the results. We feel we've built the ultimate performance vehicle. Thanks again!

FYI corvettes have some of the highest resale values in the automtive world. 1998 Corvette was 38k sticker and they still sell for 20k plus where I live. Most people will take a 10 year 40-50% depreciation on any car. Limited edition models hold their value even better, but even the original ZR1 doesn't sell for anywhere near it's original astronomical price tag. I'd expect the same for this one.
I'll still be buying gas powered cars in 10 years because they're awesome. But, I hope there's also an electric sitting in my driveway to get back and forth to work. People have been saying we were going to run out of oil for 50 years now and we haven't yet. Stop loving on Gore.

A clear engine cover looks good in the rear of a Lamborghini, but doesn't look good on the hood of the corvette in front of the car.

o.k. a glass on the hood is cool only if its showing some real engine parts. I want to see the real intake runners, not a plastic cover!
Overall this is an awesome ride! but for the price, I would grab the new GTR.
and on the subject of resale value: to the person who said, "try that on a nissan" Have you ever looked up the resale on a GTR?

@Tadge Juechter:
I'm amazed that an engineer would actually care to come to and read what the people are saying. If you are actually the Chief Corvette Engineer, that is.
And I do believe you are, due to the poor sentence structure and half-thoughts that are the promotional garbage you bring to this site. Only a half-wit would work for Chevrolet, and half that actually would be allowed to work on making cars for them. You've produced one stupid vehicle, one that for $30,000 less will still be beaten 'round the Ring by a Nissan. And given that we are separated by a thick portion of cyberspace, I must type it out to you that I wish I could laugh in your pathetic face. Get a real job and stop making terrible cars already.
And to String: the GT-R is (so far) a lower volume car and going to perform better in all but the straight lines and "balls substitute" test. The GT-R will be celebrated for a generation, much like the last line of GT-R's still is today.
Try getting anyone to import a Corvette body, and piece together a power train then spend hundreds of thousands of dollars getting it just right. People do it all the time with R-34s and R-33s. Last time someone did that with a Corvette was.... naught.

@nodos
have you ever looked at the resale of a gtr because you wouldnt be saying that if it was true. Here in america they werent for sale at all so you cant make comments about there. In England you could buy them as grey imports new iirm was in the 60k pounds range Now lets fast forward 10 years there being sold for 10k pounds or so. Nice resale value.
@ allen
wtf are you smoking 2 totally diffrent cars being marketed to 2 totally diffrent groups of people. The last gtr is only well know because it shook up the automotive world. Just like the audi quattro just like the lambo bora and just like the ford escort cosworth. This skyline isnt brining anything new to the table. Its got 4wd like alot of cars today, its fast again like alot of cars today, styling isnt as out there like the older onces so it will be more subtle. The reason the skylines were imported so much because THEY WERE NOT FOR SALE HERE. corvettes are for sale in other countrys and there isnt a road ban on them aside from in australia where you need the rhd conversion.

Well, I live in Australia so I have easy access to GT-R's, Supras, basically any Japanese import, and at great prices. No so with the Corvette. In fact, right now I have a twin-turbo 6-sp Supra and an R33 GTS-T Skyline, and both are amazing cars with amazing engines. Any US import costs an absolute BOMB to import because of LHD -> RHD conversion, etc. and the fact that these cars tend to be a lot more expensive than an "equivalent" Japanese car, so the prices have been kept high.
Although I'm not in the market for a car in the Corvette's price range, no doubt owning one would be an awesome experience, however I can't help but feel that an R35 GT-R would be a better choice, assuming track work is the aim of the game. I also dare say that with a few small upgrades to the GT-R, it would be beating the ZR-1 in a drag challenge - and of course you could do the same in the ZR-1 (and it then just becomes a matter of whoever has more money, wins)... however AWD, dual-clutch transmission and HUGE grip from the GT-R will ultimately win the race.
Yes, these two cars are for two different markets. You'll almost never "convert" a V8 guy to a turbo 6 guy, but who cares? To each their own.
As for the styling, both are quite "out there", but I'd have to lean towards the GT-R for creating a more unique shape (especially from side on with that angular roof!) while still retaining the traditional GT-R styling cues, such as the twin stove burner tail lights.
I guess in the end, only time will tell. I don't hesitate to say that in 10 years' time the GT-R will still be one of the fastest cars around, and no doubt there will be many in Australia with crazy mods and winning many races. Hopefully before even 5 years I'll have one in my garage... As for the ZR-1, I'd love one, but I doubt it'll ever be in my budget and there will be many other cars I'd take before it. In 10 years' time, I doubt the Corvette will still be a "classic" like the GT-R... and I only say this because of what I see on the roads here with 10 year-old Corvettes and GT-R's. Elsewhere, it may be very different. But I don't plan on moving! :)

They claim it started out as a shaker style hood but had leaking issues so introduce the Plexiglas. I imagine the engine torques over pretty hard so I could believe the leaking issue. Their solution was just half ass. For that matter I don't care for the side skirt either but I'm sure they help at 200+mph.

You're forgetting, the Zo6 is on of the fastest cars in its class on the drags. Of course the Zr1 is much better, I don't think any of us Vette/Chevy/GM fans are going to have much to worry about.
Also, for other super cars such as the R8, I've read tons of comments on it, and umm no one said about the gas mileage if they were to get one, and umm it's a V10, am I not right?

"...and piece together a power train then spend hundreds of thousands of dollars getting it just right. People do it all the time with R-34s and R-33s..."
No offence, but I just had to laugh when I read that. The irony of your statement is that you completely knocked the Nissan when you thought you were complementing it. I'd explain why but don't feel like holding your hand thru it all.
Also, (& unrelated to your quoted paragraph), The GT-R/EVO/STi/etc/etc are all a young mans tuner cars. The world's exotic cars don't have to be faster, they just have to be close, & that's more than enough for the people that buy them. This is not a knock on any of the aforementioned cars, because I love them all (my daily driver was a 10-sec DSM 9 years ago).

Would be possible to take of that plastic engine cover? It's probably possible with a screwdriver... but I don't know how that goes anyway.
I won't know the Corvette... I don't typically like American cars, but this is a sexy car to look at at. To drive, they are pretty fun, especially when passing other cars. I wouldn't daily drive one every day.... that's why you're friends with someone who owns one.
