Toyota and Subaru announced today in a joint press conference that Toyota is going to double its stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the company that produces Subaru cars.
Toyota is going to buy 61 million Fuji Industry shares, which increase the automaker's stake from 8.7 percent to 16.5. In addition to the announcement Toyota and Subaru also announced that the two automakers are working on a new rear-wheel-drive sports car that will be released in 2011. Toyota is in charge of the basic design of the car and Subaru is going to supply the engine. It is rumored that there will be two engines offered, a naturally aspirated 175 horsepower boxer engine and a turbocharged 2.5L.
It has been rumored that the overall design of the car is inspired by the RWD AE86 Toyota Corolla from the 1980's.

Sounds sweet, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Wonder which brand its gonna be released under, Toyota really needs a sports car in their lineup to replace the Celica.

It's possible that this car could be a great successor to the legendary AE86. A limited-slip differential should be STANDARD equipment, not a $ 2,500 option
The boxer engine has a very low center of gravity which is great for sport driving applications. However, the baseline engine (sounds like the current n/a 2.5) will be underpowered and disappoint
My fear is that the car will weigh more than 3,400 pounds making it a nice car overall, but too heavy to be a true AE86 for the new century.
This is what Toyota/Subaru should build for me.
2,400 pound car per a limited edition "club-spec" edition with all options (sunroof, a/c, power windows, etc.) eliminated
2.2 Boxer Turbo Diesel putting out 250 horsepower and 325 ft/lb torque at 3,000 rpms (engine doesn't exist yet...sadly) 6,000 rpm redline (it's a diesel after all)
Standard limited-slip differential
Rear-wheel drive
Electronic Stability control with a very large OFF button
6-speed manual
Hurry up Toyota/Subaru.... I'm waiting.
And yes, I will test drive the mules for you.

According to :
http://www.autoblog.com
"At a press conference in Japan today, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe finally confirmed that his company is jointly developing a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports cars with Subaru. Each brand will get its own version of the car, which will be powered by one of Subaru's boxer engines, though the engine's displacement, power output and even number of cylinders is not yet known. We're also not sure if the Subaru version will feature the brand's trademark all-wheel-drive system either as an option or standard equipment, or whether Toyota might offer AWD as well in an homage to the Celica GT4 (we hope so!)."
This definitely looks like it could be very good.

What they need is a new Supra.

AE haturoku is a hatchback, not a sports car.

Seems strange to me that 175 HP "will disappoint" considering the original AE86 had about 110 HP. Since the original weighed 2200, a 3400 lbs version with 175 HP would have almost exactly the same HP to weight ratio.

Thank Hyundai for this, as their Genesis coupe is the only reason for this and the myriad of other RWD coupes that will be coming out in the next year or two.

I want to see Toyota really try and stay true to the "lightweight" RWD sport's car. But I would accept a heavier vehicle if the Power to Weight ratio was enough to be on par with the other roadsters.
I'd love to see the Supra resurrected but the last model was fairly overweight and any new iteration would probably come out under the Lexus brand and cost $65,000 or more.

Even though this car and the AE86 might have the same hp to weight ratio, the new car will still feel heavier. Handling on a 3400 lbs car is going to be worse then a 2200 lbs car too if using the same type of suspension and same size vehicle.
Toyota has need something like this for years now. Will be interesting to see if it is positioned price wise. Things might be getting interesting again come the next decade.

Anyone else think that the car in the drawing looks kinda like a coupe Ford Focus?

@Noya:
You hit the nail on the head. Toyota even came out and said they see Hyundai as their biggest threat in the coming years... Let just hope Subaru isn't taking the helm in the looks department...

Come on Toyota bring back the 22B!!! I don't care about AWD, I just want a nice coupe.

All cars are too heavy nowadays. It's impossible to build a RWD coupe that weighs under 3,000 pounds and is remotely comfortable.
Good news from Toyota, I won't buy one, but the competition might inspire some decent cars. Toyotas have no soul, they're appliances.
Yay for Hyundai pushing the envelope!

What I don't understand is why Toyota is building this car. They aren't following the ae86 formula... this actually seems more like the ma70 formula (no offense to any mk3 owners here). If they build a cheap enthusiasts car, it will have an easier time cracking into the youth subculture than those horrid Scion contraptions. It might kill a few more kids, but hey, people are popping out kids like rabbits these days.
And please get a different engine! At the very least just let janitor at Yamaha throw his broom at a cylinder head!

I like the idea except for the boxer engine, they sound awful. Personally I think Toyota should make a performance version of the 2ZR-FE, turbo charge it and make it rev high. That would make an awe inspiring little car.

I vaguely agree with Skyline. The EJ25T is a rather brash sounding boxer. However this might be a two way street we are dealing with here. Subaru is in some serious need of engine tech help. Having an STi get an avg of 20mpg is just crap. You don't need to have the turbo spooling at highway speeds. I can only hope Toyota will give Subaru some more efficient engine designs.

I think this should be like the scions in cost and such. Give it a base engine of a 1.5-1.6l making 110 hp or so then give it the 5age or w.e its called that came in the last gen gts 200 hp 2l i think. This car should stay naturally aspirated with a very high power band think of honda gsr engine but with a bit more torque in the lower end. Prob with the subi boxer motor is not that its spooling at highway speeds its that it needs 15+ psi to make the power. Because it needs so much boost its got lag and to overcome that lag they give it big gears which kils the mpg. The evo suffers the same problem.

Hmm.. It'll never happen, or if it does it will be a complete disapointment... Lets face it Toyota=bland... Everything has the FE head, there is no GE anymore... All gets the MPG but try to get a stick shift at a toyota dealer... Good luck, unless you buy a yaris...which looks like a jelly bean had s@x with a rollerskate... There only "sporty" car is the TC, which is boring with its FE head and way to heavy to be nimble. If they were to bring this car back it would need to be light, have a revampted 4age and be cheap... Note: the AE86 GTS did not have 110hp it had 160hp... So 120 in a car that weighs more, with RWD is gonna be about as exciting as the mid 80's 4banger mustangs... you know the ones where you could rev it to 5grand dump the clutch and watch it buck, sputter and stall... I would love to see this happen, and it would be great if it did, but it is highly unlikely... After all the only engine they had recently with any note of excitement they sold to lotus to use in there sports car, rather then the mr-s.... 2zzge... Also, if they do go forth with this... i have about 500 people in my car club ready to trade keys...
Motors i would buy this car with
2zzge
4age
3sge
4agte
3sgte
Tranny
5 or 6 speed manual
If it is clutchless... no thanks ill stick with my civic
config
2 door
RWD
less then 2800lbs
i dont want AC, sunroof, power windows, or traction and stability control...
and i want it for less then 20grand...
