Mercedes-Benz is Thinking About a 4-Cylinder C-Class for the US

2008_mercedes_benz_c_class.jpg
Currently Mercedes-Benz does not offer a 4-cylinder C-Class in the US. This may all change due to the high gas prices and new CAFE regulations.

Mercedes already offers the C-Class with a 4-cylinder in Europe. The C180 Kompressor is powered by a supercharged 1.8L 4-cyl that puts out 154 horsepower. Supposedly the automaker is already testing a supercharged 1.4L. There is no word if the 1.4L will eventually replace the 1.8L in Europe.

If a 4-cylinder C-Class is eventually offered in the US, it will start under the V6 powered C300.

Allen:

Good idea, make a diesel version too.

Cheap Car Lover:

I guess if there's a market for it, build it. Now we'll be able to get a C-Class for the price of the V6 Camry!

I don't think they should be allowed to call it a c-CLASS anymore though because the Mercedes brand apparently name no longer carrys with it any semblance of class. : o P

SteelCity1981:

Great looking car for a great price. I would def take this over any other sedan in it's class.

carman:

I hope they bring the diesel 4 here as well since it gets around 60mpg. Heck, even the diesel 6 that gets 43mpg would be a huge bonus!

Car Nazi:

Mercedes have had crap quality ever since they were poisoned by Chrysler. Do yourself a favor and buy BMW or Lexus and pray neither one is ever associated with the Big 3.

lowest IQ:

yeah, BMW never got poisened by Rover...

and...

yes, bring in the 1.8litr compressor. I believe it still has 173bhp and 29 cupholders.

Steadler und Waldorff:

not poisened,

only a small infection from Chris Bangle.
Wasnt he born in Detroit?

zipppy:

Bad idea.
Why spend the inflated price for a subpar 4 banger sedan when they are better offerings for less?
Keep it over there.

Reggie:

If BMW offered a 4-cyl 1-series, I would've bought that when I was looking to get a new car... I think a 4-cyl C-class is a great idea, most people driving these luxury cars hardly notice the amount of power they have as it is. But soccer moms and frugal drivers will take note of the lower cost and fuel consumption.

dennisil:

i drove a old C class 4 banger with a kompressor back in the late ninties, that little bugger had some balls ok maby not but it was stable at hw speeds 130mph+ . i have test driven the 300 4 matic in november of 07 and it seemed nice but it was so much smaller than my TL that i didnt make the switch. i need to stop looking at cars all day its driving me mad...

how about a hybrid c class? 4 banger with a R/C 9.6v battery?

I would have to agree.

"how about a hybrid c class? 4 banger with a R/C 9.6v battery?"

Hahaha, nice.

Andrew:

Sad thing is there are people out there that will actually purchase this car and then gloat that they have a Mercedes Benz......

Sorry, I've owned a Mercedes-Benz and unlike what they pride themselves on (driving one, and you will never drive anything else), it was complete garbage... In any case, there are so many 4 cylinder cars on the market as it is, this car will need to be priced somewhere near the TSX in order to attract someone to it.

BR:

I guess it was so very very long ago that no one can recall the 2005 C230, in both sedan and coupe guise, (not to mention the slk) with a 189 hp four that got 31+ on the highway? List was right around $30,000 for the sedan.
