The New Jersey-based Tri-State Coalition for Responsible Investment and the Connecticut state treasurer's office said Ford Motor Co. is planning on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from its new vehicles between now and 2020 by as much as 30%.
The Tri-State Coalition is also trying to get GM to jump on board and also develop ways to reduce its emissions. According to Sister Patricia Daly, GM was "not at the point of setting any kind of reduction goals" on how to meet new requirements by 2020.
Greg Martin, a GM spokesman, countered that there is "no other automaker which is dedicating more resources to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency than General Motors. We have kept key stakeholders informed of our progress and we've been transparent every step of the way."
Ford plans to meet the goal by introducing its new EcoBoost 4-cyl and 6-cyl direct-injection turbocharged engines, reducing vehicle weight and by introducing more hybrid models.

well if the recent trend of increased car weights and HP numbers continue, that is a fairly impressive claim to make...

by the way their marketshare is going, they will end-up with 'zero-percent' emission, maybe already by 2015.

It a lot simpler: how about 'stop selling trucks'?

Not simple, their truck department brings them lots of sales through consumers and fleet sales.

This is such a feel good measure that will have no measurable difference on the environment. Emissions from modern cars is fine today. Can you even kill yourself in a garage with one anymore? Seriously improving fuel economy is important today for many but unless improving emissions increases mileage we shouldn't do it.

30% reduction in sales = 30% reduction in emissions

You can kill your self with anything which produces carbon monoxide. It attaches to the hemoglobin and all your cells die.

I'm sure they WANT to reduce emissions 30%. Just like I want the gas prices to drop 30%. In fact, I'm looking to dump my car entirely. Took a good look at just what it takes these days to just have a car: car payment, insurance, maintenance, fuel. Geez, I have to work 2 months of the year just to have this hunk of metal? Riding my bike as a kid doesn't seem so silly these days...

30% by 2020. That's 12 years from now. Thats 2.5% per year. What a moreons.
If they cant even do that.... with the decreasing popularity of trucks and SUVs (gas prices....) ford will achieve its 'target' on natural changes in product mix alone.
What a BS.
Real companies would say: 5% year on year for the same model/class.

@ WVO
Don't forget property tax on your vehicle (certain states), tax on your insurance company's income(it makes the charge you more) and gas tax.

They just need to start offering air bags as options in all of their vehicles and make more small cars.
