All-New 2009 Mazda6 for the North American Market Officially Unveiled

2009_mazda6_us_2.jpg
Mazda has officially unveiled the 2009 Mazda6 for the North American market.

The 2009 Mazda6 shares many of the same styling cues with the smaller Mazda6 that was introduced at the end of last year in Europe and Japan. The US-spec Mazda6 is powered by either a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine or the same 3.7L V6 from the CX-9 SUV. The four-cylinder can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is only available with a six-speed automatic with manual shift control. Mazda has yet to release the actual specs for the engines.

The all-new Mazda6 will be available later this summer and will only be available as a sedan...that means the wagon and five-door version are dead.

Do you think the North American Mazda6 looks better than the smaller Mazda6 that is sold in Europe and Japan?

PRESS RELEASE:

Mazda Reveals the All-New Mazda6 for the North American Market
- Designed and engineered specifically for North American customers -

HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today revealed the all-new Mazda6 and confirmed that sales will start in late summer 2008.

Specifically developed for North America, the all-new Mazda6 inherits and evolves the sporty styling and superb driving performance of the first generation Mazda6. The North American model features a larger body and greater engine displacement to meet the particular demands of the North American market. Handling and comfort were also optimized for North American road conditions.

"Following the CX-7 and the CX-9, the 2009 North American Mazda6 is the third model that was designed and engineered specifically to meet the needs of our North American customers," said Daniel T. Morris, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of marketing and overseas sales. "The midsize sedan segment is extremely competitive and the Mazda6 will be up against some of the best vehicles in the industry.

"The all-new Mazda6 offers plenty of Mazda's characteristic Zoom-Zoom vitality and we believe it will succeed in the challenging North American market. We will continue to deliver products that reflect our customers' needs and build Mazda's brand image in order to achieve the goals set out in our mid-term Mazda Advancement Plan."

The all-new North American Mazda6 will be powered by Mazda's newly developed 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder (I4) engine and its 3.7-liter V6 engine. The I4 engine is already available in the European and Japanese Mazda6 models and the V6 promises an exhilarating ride, coming straight from the 2008 North American Truck of the Year, the Mazda CX-9. A six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode will be available for the I4 engine. The V6 will be coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. The North American Mazda6 will be available only as a four-door sedan.

The all-new North American Mazda6 will be produced at AutoAlliance International in Flat Rock, Michigan, a joint venture with partner Ford Motor Company, as it has been since the first Mazda6 launched in 2002.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Jim:

"Mazda has yet to release the actual specs for the engines."

And yet, the I4 is already being used in Japan and Europe, and the V6 comes from the CX-9. Any monkey with 2 fingers and a search engine can get specs for these engines NOW. Torque Report is just being lazy.

Chucklehead:

lol

looks phat

Cheap Car Lover:

I despise people that always say sedans look like other sedans. Of course the do, they're boring sedans!

The front is definitely unique, but it seems like they got some styling cues (especially the exhaust) from the Lexus LS.

I think it's a good looking car. Hopefully it hasn't grown in size to become an enormous sedan like the Camry and Accord.

Just to save people time. The V6 should be roughly 270hp and the 4 cylinder should be 170hp, just like ever other mass-market non-luxury fwd sedan.

Mazda6 Guy:

Guess who is getting a name change...

This thing is just ugly. No hatch is a deal breaker for me.

John:

Looks nice, but it's still a Mazda.

Sphere:

The front does looks like a Citroen C5 to me...Not very attractive.

kw:

Just not a fan of Mazda's front fenders look in their new designs. Can't imagine it does anything but add weight and add turbulence to the air flow.

Just my .02.

reminds me of a toyota solara for some reason

Nerd:

It is not as good looking as the Euro version. OK though. If it is around $18.5k I will consider it.

SEALBoy:

I think it looks pretty good, especially the rear end. They should put the Euro versions headlights on this though.

ozric:

I think the car looks great, I hope it did not gain much weight, but the fact that there is no manual tranny = no sale for me. I like to row my own gears.

ozric:

I ment to say that the fact that there is no manual tranny for the V-6 = no sale for me.

Cheap Car Lover:

"A six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode will be available for the I4 engine"

SteelCity1981:

That thing looks freaking sweet!

o:

Hello:

Is it me or does this car scream Hyundai Genesis+ two more doors?

Alex Greene:

This is not bad, but yes, Euro version looks waaay better.

bubba551:
Two things that I like better about this than the Euro version:

1) It has a v6
2) It headlights don't look like they were borrowed from a Ford Fusion.

BigDogE:

I own a 2005 Mazda6 Hatch and I must say I am very impressed with the new model. What I am disappointed about is they ditched the hatchback; once you fit a refrigerator and full size exercise bike in the trunk of a 4 door car, its kind of hard to go back to a standard trunk, too bad more people didn't see the value in the hatch... oh well, Im still hooked... Must... Buy... New 6...

Luke:

Youse arn't getting the hatch, what the hell. here in Australia no one wants the sedan because it is usless in comparision to the hatch. I'm pretyy sure they sell 2 sedan models here and 5 hatch models. Oh and one wagon model can't forget that.

But we do want the V6. It will be another car to compete in our large segment(yes we would consider this car large any car over 5m here is considered a limosene ie BMW 7 series lengh.) Since we get the Japanese spec one though with a few gadgets ripped out we will probably never see a V6 just like in the last model. Although we will rpbably get the MPS one (Mazdaspeed)

Also looks like they have sort of cheaponed yours up to keep the price down. Then again they have to in your country to compete with some of the cheap junk avialble there. Out bottom of the line starts at $29900AUD and we are currently buying 95c for $1AUD so you do the math. Would youse be willing to pay $28000 for the base model when you can get other chaper cars in the states? SO don't winge about headlights cause lense ones are a fair bit more expensive. They had to cut costs somewhere otherwise they would loose money.
By the way 30k for us in Australia is a bargain.

hater:

RX8 morphing into the Mercedes S class in the front, with the pointed Mazda "smile" grill. Amazing how much the greenhouse looks like current Accord coupe. Rear looks like ES330. I liked the last 6, I'll wait till I see this in person to make my decision...

Al:

Thumbs up I like it!

o:

mmmm 30k is a bargian in australia bt only because we are willing to pay in you yanks arent and wil go cheaper

lowest iq:

can someone explain the wisdom behind having an american version when the Asia/Japan-domestic/Euro spec are different (and maybe even better....).

Who the hell at Mazda -USA thinks that he is worth a 'local' version?

bes kep secret:

No 5-Door? No Speed6? WTF?

bubba551:

@Luke

As a general rule, almost all the cars are cheaper in the US, even when the models are identical. While we don't get the entire range of the european cars, the ones that we get cost less than they do in Europe.

It could be due to the open nature of our market or the fact that our market is just very large and very competitive. The real kicker is that the declining dollar hasn't driven up import prices to any degree, but I bet it has cut into margins.

jettto:

the EURO version IS MUCH BETTER!

jeff bishop:

THIS CAR LOOKS GOOD, NO I TAKE THAT BACK, THE CAR LOOKS AWESOME! I AM DEFINITELY BUYING ONE.YEAH THE FRONT LOOKS AWKWARD BUT THE REST OF THE CAR LOOKS GOOD.CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT IN PERSON.....OH BUY THE WAY..MAZDA GUY YEAH YOU..GUESS WHO GETTING A NAME CHANGED? LOOK IN THE MIRROR.

Rich:

Not bad, Mazda/Ford. Something to consider. Now, if you could just design the car with SOME residual value....
